Small but not flat

Posted on August 19th, 2009 in Long Reef.

Went for a beach walk around midday and discovered that there were little mal-able waves to be had at low tide at Longy. A few bods out getting some fun looking slides in the low tide crumblers. I had a camera with, so here’s a snap…

Looks like Brenon and the boys picked a good week to go to the Maldives…

Broken record

Posted on August 19th, 2009 in South Carolina.

Same old story. Hot, humid, extra high and low tides, jellyfish and flat! Too bad because Wednesday will start with glass conditions. But Thursdays bouy data is showing a pulse coming in early in the am thanks to Huuricane Bill who is suppose to be off the SC coast Saturday. So it looks like a weekend of surf.

Not even small

Posted on August 19th, 2009 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Beautiful morning one and all. But, there is a distinct lack of wave energy at Dee Why. Yesterday morning’s little pulse has faded and we’re now looking at around a metre of SE swell at about 9 seconds apart. As a consequence there didn’t seem to be anybody in the water at the Dee Why end of the beach. Waves looked to be in the knee to waist high range, but mostly folding over right onto the beach. You might find a mal wave at a really exposed spot, but I wouldn’t be overly hopeful.

Outlook for the next week in Sydney is not great it has to be said. The models are projecting generally small to flat conditions for our stretch of the east coast across the next 5 days – at least. I’m hoping the super computers will be wrong and that in fact one of the big storm systems in the far southern ocean will get around into our swell window… optimism springs eternal in the surfer heart…

Have yourself a great day!

Fine, dry and cool on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  The swell is smooth and fat at 1 – 2 feet  from the east southeast.  There is a light northwest breeze forecast to go northeast later.  High tide 0705 and low tide around 1245.  Local barometer 1019 hpa, 4 degrees C. 91% humidity.   Have a good one.

Linda Mar, 18 August 2009

Posted on August 19th, 2009 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. This morning I surfed for the first time with J, a sometime reader of this little ol' blog. Impressively, she pulled up next to me in the parking lot at Linda Mar right on time. (A, on the other hand, probably forgot to set her alarm again.)

J reported that Rockaway was looking pretty flat and not breaking in the usual spot. Although the NW swell had dropped some, Linda Mar was still offering weak shoulders with light wind. We headed to the north end and got a peak mostly to ourselves. J caught a handful of rides on her fish which, at 6'4", had a foot on mine. I could've used some more board under me, but pulled off a short left on Nemo for a good start to the day. And a little warm up for the south swell coming this weekend!

The southerly change arrived right on cue, but it didn’t bring a whole lot of swell with it to Byron Bay Today. The wind blew from the south at around 30knotts  for most of the day, only just starting to lose some of its intensity by late afternoon. If you could get yourself a spot out of the wind, it was a glorious day. Yet what little swell there was had far too much south in it to really wrap around the cape and produce any serious waves in the bay. That doesn’t mean there weren’t any waves to be had. It’s that just you needed a good size log to ride them, it really wasn’t an option for the little whiteboard set in the bay at all today. Those who brought the right equipment though, had a ball, and so there was much rejoicing for the opportunity of at least a little high tide slide, In Byron Bay Today.
