Come back Huey
Posted on August 24th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Hmmm. The models were showing a possibly surfable pulse for today… Sadly, it has not come to pass. We’ve got flatness instead and it does not appear as though we can expect much improvement in the situation any time soon. And this despite a massive and intense low pressure system in the Southern Ocean. The high over the Tasman is just too strong and reaches too far south for all that energy to get into the east coast’s swell window. At this stage all one can hope for is that Huey will confound the forecasts by writing us a better script.
Warning Summary at issue time:
Gale Warning south of Ulladulla. Strong Wind Warning between Seal Rocks and Ulladulla, including Sydney Closed Waters, and for north of Wooli.Synoptic Situation
A deep low moving through the Southern Ocean will increasing north to northwesterly winds over most coastal waters on Monday. An active cold front associated with this low is forecast to move into the Tasman Sea early Tuesday morning with winds reaching gale force over southern and central parts of the NSW coast. A second front is expected to cross the southern NSW coast Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. A high pressure ridge will develop over northern waters mid week and extend over southern waters later in the week.
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong Wind Warning.
Monday until midnight: Wind: W/NW 10/15 knots inshore, 15/20 knots offshore, increasing to 25/33 knots during the day.Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres, rising to 2 to 3 metres during the day.Swell: E/NE less than 1 metre.
Tuesday: Wind: W/NW 30/40 knots, easing to 20/30 knots.Sea: 3 to 4 metres, abating to 2 to 3 metres.Swell: E/NE less than 1 metre.
Wednesday: Wind: W’ly 25/33 knots.
Still small if not flat
Posted on August 24th, 2009 in Manly.More of the same. I am over all this dribble. Especially given the waves they have been getting down in VIC this last week. Not fair. Oh well its warm and sunny still and thats something they can only dream about in August. Outlook still not to flash but we may get a small pulse come Wednesday. Go the mighty AB’s.

Byron Bay Today Aug 23rd / 09
Posted on August 24th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour, Surf Reports.
Well folks it was a sunny Sunday, In Byron Bay. However if you were hoping for any serious waves, you would have been looking for something else to do. There was only one spot with a reasonable wave in Byron Bay today. But unfortunately one of the surf schools claimed it as being exclusively theirs on a busy Sunday, go figure. Not exactly a winning move for public relations guys. Oh well there’s just no working some folks out. Be that as it may, a few desperados went and got wet anyway just for the sake of it. There were also heaps of beginners having a go in the white water, which they should be commended for. Learning in the white water is the way to do it, Hmm maybe they should be teaching instead. We had sunshine and warm temps most of the day, with light north easterly sea breezes. The water was clear and pretty warm. There just wasn’t any significant swell to speak of, which is pretty much in line with the weather patterns for this time of year. So just take it when you get it, and enjoy a stroll and a swim when you don’t. After all if we’ve got to wait for swell, then there’s no better place to wait than right here, In Byron Bay Today.
Not quite flat
Posted on August 23rd, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Looks like there are some little mal-able waves at spots exposed to the generally easterly windswell. But don’t expect much above the knee high mark because it’s averaging less than a metre at sea and the period is a gutless 7 seconds. However, there is the odd 9 sec set in the mix, so methinks that those are the ones that’ll be getting caught today.
Our week-ahead outlook remains pretty dire for Sydney. However one of the models is showing a prospect for a tiny improvement tomorrow. The wind looks as though it could be an issue though – should be coming from the right direction, but it could be on the strong side. Winter seems to be going out with a whimper.
If you want some real juice, you should hop a plane for… New York! Water temp is 22, air is 25 and Rockaway beach should be pumping with no wind tomorrow. In fact, the whole eastern seaboard of North America should be going off thanks to Hurricane Bill. It’ll be light there from around 9pm Sydney time and you should be able to see something on these cams…
Have a good one, wherever you find yourself in the world.
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Sunday until midnight: Wind: N/NW 10/15 knots, tending N/NE 15/20 knots during the afternoon.Sea: 1 to 2 metres. Swell: NE 1 metre.
Monday: Wind: W/NW 20/30 knots.Sea: 2 to 3 metres.Swell: E/NE 1 metre.
Tuesday: Wind: W/NW 20/30 knots.
Small and weak on the high tide- outlook poor
Posted on August 23rd, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports. There might be a little something on the low tide later today but its unridable now and the outlook is dismal. Huey is unloading on our Mexican cousins in Vicco at the moment so jump on a plane and get some epic kegs- the outlook is sensational and getting better if you can handle surfing in the cold. Just grab a 4/3, some booties, gloves and a hoodie, and you’ll be fine. Enjoy.

Port Macquarie, NSW – Saturday, 22 August 2009: A great week of surfing, weather, waves and comradery was capped off with an amazing last day of competition at the Australian Longboard Titles.
Having seen 184 of Australia’s best converging on Port Macquarie, today represented the pinnacle with 11 National Titles awarded in front of a large crowd.
In the Open Men division Josh Constable (Noosa, QLD) highlighted to all why he is one of the greatest ever Australian surfers.
Defeating Harley Ingelby (Emerald Beach, NSW), Grant Thomas (Maroochydore, QLD) and Dane Pioli (Tweed Heads, NSW) , who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Constable extended his reign as the most successful amateur longboarder in Australian history.
“To win five Australian Titles is amazing,” he said.
“When I started surfing as a youngster I always dreamed of winning one National Title and a World Title,” he admitted.
“To achieve this and more is beyond words.”
Wrapped in an enthralling battle from start to finish, Constable was glad to get the nod ahead of great mates and excellent competitors.
With a see-sawing battle over the 25-minute finale, Constable and Ingelby traded blows until the very end.
“The level of surfing on show throughout the entire week has been first-class,” Constable admitted.
“It’s always good to be beat the best,” he said.
Following on from Constable’s epic feat was fellow Noosa resident Rosie Locke who claimed her first ever Australian Longboard Title.
Defeating Georgia Young (Swinbourne, WA), Samantha White (Culburra, NSW) and Biana Anstiss (Currumbin, QLD), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Locke was lost for words after claiming her maiden Title.
“I can’t believe it,” she said with a beaming smile.
“This is the best feeling ever!”
Having been in red-hot form throughout the contest, Locke was in career best form as she marched through the semi-finals and final with a dynamic repertoire of powerful surfing.
“Things just seemed to go my way out there,” Locke added.
“When I heard that competition had turned back to Town Beach my confidence grew with the prospect of a consistent right-hand peak.”
In a day that will be forever remembered for the performances of Queensland surfers, Mark McNamara (Currumbin Waters, QLD) was the headline act after winning two Australian Longboard Titles within one hour.
Having claimed the Over 35’s with one of the performances of day, racking up a combined heat total of 14.15 (out of a possible 20), McNamara then paddled out, conquered and won the Over 45 years division.
Also on top of the world after a stunning display was Ed Cunningham (Bundaberg, QLD) who outpointed his twin brother, George, in the Junior Male division.
In what was an excellent insight into the future of Australian Longboarding, Cunningham amassed the highest single heat total of the day with 16.35 (out of a possible 20).
Rachel Pinsak (Terrigal, NSW) claimed the Junior Female division, whilst Hayden Swan (Yamba, NSW), Bruce Channon (Mona Vale, NSW), Debbie Boggis (Currumbin, Qld), Glen Mahoney (Emerald Beach, NSW) and Neville Smith (Ashgrove, Qld).
