Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review
Posted on September 27th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour.Well folks it’s been weird one in Byron Bay this week. The swell has been up and down like a yoyo. Huey can’t seem to make up his mind which way the wind should be blowing, although he’s decided on the velocity. Howling seems to be the predominant choice for wind settings at the moment. There’s been whales frisking and capering all over the place with gleeful abandon. The odd shark or two still were cruising around giving to occasional tourist a bit of a speed up. Then to top it all off we had the dust storm on Wednesday, that’s spring in Australia for you, everything card is in the deck and you never know what’ll be dealt next. Of course there’s been heaps of talk about global warming this week, and hey I don’t doubt it plays a part. But I also remember this being the norm for spring when I was a little bloke. The season was just as unpredictable then. After all this going on, I got to say we were very lucky to be invited to Kiva Spa up the road in Mullumbimby to do a review on their service today. Talk about perfect timing, as we both needed a serious wind down after facing the elements everyday this week, and we weren’t disappointed, but more on that later. Make sure you keep an eye out for that when we publish it, because John the proprietor has come up with something pretty special for our email subscribers of, In Byron Bay Today.
Great conditions in the dusty gloam!
Posted on September 26th, 2009 in North Narrabeen. All I can say is that it pays to go and have a look. The 10 or so lucky ones surfing early this morning did just that and struck gold at NN.
Hope you had a good one!
Cheers, Doug
Little lunchtime waves
Posted on September 26th, 2009 in Dee Why.I was pleasantly surprised to see little offshore waves along the Dee Why to Longy stretch…
Small, but clean.
Posted on September 26th, 2009 in South Carolina.Looks like light wind all weekend long and a small bump best caught on the incoming tides to avoid and trenches that have formed over the last couple of weeks. The bump will rise on Sunday morning by a foot, so enjoy your longboard.

Yep, dusty at the beach too
Posted on September 26th, 2009 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
If you don’t need to be out and about in the dust this morning, the recommendation is to stay inside until it clears up. There’s nothing much going on down at the beach anyway.
The swell really screeched to a halt yesterday afternoon as Huey dropped the power setting from 10-12 seconds to a paltry 7. So, even if you don’t mind the dust situation, you’re not likely to find anything above waist high.
Outlook is for the smallness to continue until around Monday as the low offshore starts spinning up. I’m hoping for some fun size SE swell off that one…
Go well folks and I should have a couple fresh slideshows up later today for you.

Early riser call
Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
For those of you getting up for the early, here’s what I reckon…
Huey’s plan is to blow the milk out of your coffee Saturday morning. There’s a gale warning for N-NW winds and that, combined with a weakening SE swell of a metre or so, should result in small to near flat conditions. Hard to get too hopeful…
However, while Sunday’s not looking all that exciting (er flat), by Monday we could have another south pulse with offshores.
Have a great evening and catch you again tomorrow!

O’Leary & Van Dijk Win Opening Rip Curl GromSearch at Jan Juc.
Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Contests, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories.
Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island) continued her super impressive junior form by winning the Rip Curl GromSearch in Victoria today.
Excellent waves and high scoring performances culminated an outstanding final day to the opening event to the Rip Curl GromSearch 2009/2010 Series presented by SNICKERS at Jan Juc Beach in Victoria.
With a new solid groundswell and clean offshore winds lighting up the entire Surfcoast region Australia’s top 16 year and under surfers were able to unleash all their talents and high scoring performances were the only way to win.
The Blue ribbon Boys and Girls 16 and under finals were both high scoring with the Boys final getting down to a wave for wave close battle which saw Cronulla’s Connor O’Leary take the win by just 0.25 points ahead of Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey with Tasmania’s Hamish Renwick 3rd and Lennox Head/NSW surfer Nikki Hoskin in 4th.
“So pleased to win the first event of the series, it takes the pressure off by winning this one as I’m now qualified for the national final” said O’Leary after his win.
“It’s my second win on the GromSearch series, I won in Cronulla last year and now I’ll aim to try and win the series for this year” added O’Leary.
The girl’s final saw a dominating performance from Phillip Island’s Nikki Van Dijk who scored the days highest wave score of a 9.2 early in the final to take a massive lead that was never seriously challenged.
Van Dijk is the defending GromSearch Girls 16 international champion and she’s very keen to defend that title next Easter.
“Great to win the first event on the series and I’m looking forward to the final now – I’ll compete in a few more GromSearch events this year but winning today is great as I’m qualified and can relax and concentrate on defending the title next Easter.”
Van Dijk defeated fellow Phillip Island surfer India Payne who found a strong 6 point ride late in final to move into second place ahead of interstate surfers Brodie Doyle (Qld) and Lauren McAleer (NSW).
Soli Bailey’s performance today was exceptional, despite losing the closest final in the 16 Boys, he took a convincing win in the 14 Boys final where he posted two excellent 8 point plus rides to defeat Jake Thompson (NSW), Chris Robertson (NSW) and Kai Hing (Qld).
The Girls 14 and under final saw another great performance from Victorian Phillip Island region surfer Kelly Laity (Sandy Point) who won the final over Indiana Green (NSW).
Twelve and under winners were Jemima Hutchins (Barwon Heads) and Jaemes Young (NSW/Angourie).
Full spreads sheets of results are available from www.surfingaustralia.com
As the opening event to the seven event series for 2009/2010 all surfers here were hoping to get off to a great start and pick up valuable series ratings points.
All winners of the 16′s division get an invite to Bell’s for the National Final and following on from last year the highest placed non event winner on the GromSearch Ratings will also get an invite.
Eventual ratings winners of the 14′s divisions will get a two board quiver from one of Rip Curl’s leading shapers.
Today’s SNICKERS wave of the day went to Nikki Van Dijk for her outstanding 9.2 winning ride in the final.
Snaps from this morning
Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Long Reef.Hello Friends,
Went for a splash at Long Reef bombies this morning and then did a bit of shooting down the beach toward the lagoon entrance. Longy was its usual random self but every now and again you could get something into the head high range. Meanwhile, south along the beach toward the Lagoon there was a small crew chasing the makeable ones amongst the shutdowns. Roughly the same size, maybe a touch smaller there, but more juice.
Herewith a few snaps…
And down near the lugga…
