All Welcome for a Night of Music, Films, Comedy, Prizes & Surfing

Surfrider Foundation Northern Beaches Beach Benefit Bash

Inspired by the pithy “we all use the same ocean” axiom, Surfrider Foundation’s Northern Beaches has concocted a fundraising event that includes music, films, comedy and awesome raffle gear that anyone who hits the beach won’t want to miss. The festivities kick off at the modern, seaside Manly Wharf Hotel, October 29, from 6pm. (click here to get your tix!)

Surf expressionist Ozzie Wright’s Goons of Doom will headline the event, movies by legendary filmmaker Tim Bonython will be on show, and noted personalities and surfing icons will be mingling about.

Surfrider has even cooked up a surprise famous local comedian to emcee the evening.

Silent Auction items (bring your wallets!) include:

  • Surf trip to the Maldives (courtesy Line Up Dee Why, valued at $4,500)
  • Surf trip to Tasmania (courtesy Southern Ocean Adventures, valued at $2,000)
  • Balsa Custom Surfboard Kit (courtesy Riley, valued at $700)

“Most of us live on the Northern Beaches because we love the beach and all it has to offer, so it’s good to see local people giving back, wanting to preserve our greatest local natural assets—our beaches,” said Manly MP Mike Baird.

The cost of entry is only $25 (click here to get your tix!), which, on top of several nights’ worth of entertainment packed into one, also includes a complimentary beverage, canapés, and a squeaky clean conscience. Surfrider Memberships, usually $45, will be on offer for $10.

All proceeds will benefit Surfrider Foundation Australia, the non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Australia’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through CARE: Conservation, Activism, Research and Education.

Awesome sponsors and donators of raffle prizes are: Aloha Manly, Coastalwatch, Dripping Wet Manly, EcoDepot, FCS, Line Up Dee Why, Mambo, RealSurf, Riley Classic Balsa Surfboards, Rip Curl, Skater HQ Manly, Southern Ocean Adventures, Sprout Daily, Surf Stitch, The Green Groper Narrabeen, Whitewater Restaurant Manly, Wicks Surf Collaroy, Wind Surf and Snow Long Reef, Your Food Coach.

A metre of short period south windswell doesn't make for a great picture.

A metre of short period south windswell doesn't make for a great picture.

Hello Friends,

Not the most exciting morning surfwise at Dee Why and the darkening skies aren’t making the scene any more attractive. Wind is out of the SSE at 10-15 kts so surface conditions are less than appetizing. What can ya do? Just how it is I guess.

At this stage it looks as though we’ll have pretty ordinary weather through the weekend. As the synopsis below indicates, the experts at the BoM aren’t quite sure how a low pressure system off the Central Coast will play out. The models reckon the likelihood is head high plus, short period and onshore windswell conditions.

We shall see…

Have yourself a great day!

Tides: L@1244, H@1856
Synoptic Situation
A Low is expected to develop east of the Central Coast during today as a ridge of high pressure develops over Tasmania. The Low is expected to move rapidly eastwards during Saturday. The exact development and position of the low, and hence the resulting winds around the low, are uncertain at this stage.

Fine, dry and warm on the Central Coast this Friday morning.  The swell is blown out, dribbly and small at 1 – 2 feet from the southeast.  There is a moderate southerly wind which will go southeast later.  High tide 0645 and low tide around 1245.  Local barometer 1007 hpa, 19 degrees C. 89% humidity.   Have a good long weekend.

Small and weak

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 in Manly.

Sorry folks all I can report of this morning is a weak and small 1ft wind swell. Its not flash.  Drive safe and remember its double demerits out there today. For the record we have just gone through high tide and low is due at 12:45. Wind should be out of the SW to W area before turning onshore as the day progresses. Sadly its been blowing from the South all night and is presently SE.  Fingers crossed we get some fresh swell by tom.

Gratitude is the name of the game in Byron bay today.

No surf, but what a beautiful day, whales dolphins and joyous bits in Byron Bay today.
No surf, but what a beautiful day, whales dolphins and joyous bits in Byron Bay today.

Gratitude was the name of the game, In Byron Bay Today. What’s this all about? Well it’s simple; there have been earthquakes and a tsunami in the last thirty six hours in the south eastern Pacific Rim. The end result; many souls have lost their lives; many folk are homeless, hungry, frightened, confused and devastated. They face an uncertain future. Disease and possible famine, who knows what else, may come? The simple fact is they are doing it very tough over there right now, and our hearts are with them. While finishing up work late last night Yoko and I came to talking about just how lucky we are here and how grateful we are for all that we have in Byron Bay today. Then I pull up in town this morning and hear a bunch folks complaining about this and that. You know the usual stuff, small town politics and the desire to have others live according to their wishes. It just sounded so bloody petty; it kind of pissed me off. I felt like screaming at them, for God’s sake, don’t you twats know how good we’ve got it here? But I refrained, instead we got on with our work and tried to stay open to what the day may bring so we can share it with you. Here’s a thought for those fools who feel Byron Bay is not ok. Open your eyes and try being grateful for all that we have, the fact that we can afford food, and more importantly that it’s readily available to us would be a good start. Or the fact that our loved ones and our shelters haven’t just been washed away, In Byron Bay Today.
