Posted on October 16th, 2009 in Postcard.Hello Friends,
Oh, that MHL buoy doesn’t look too flash. Primary swell direction is showing as SSW. Must be heading off to NZ… Could be a little something on offer for the Saturday early risers though – if… if the swell goes back to the south that is…
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Friday until midnight: Wind: W/SW 20/25 knots Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres.Swell: S’ly 1.5 to 2 metres.
Saturday: Wind: S/SW 15/20 knots reaching 20/25 knots offshore.Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres.Swell: S’ly about 1.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: S/SE 10/15 knots, tending E/NE.
Here in Southern California we got a little pulse of west swell along with sunny skies today. My pal Tim and I jumped in the water at a spot called Pitas point (about 10 km south of Rincon) and pretty much had a stretch of this very long right hander to ourselves. Nothing spectacular, but there were a few chest high peelers that ran for a couple hundred metres. And the water was quite pleasant (around the 18 mark I’d guess). After surfing we went and got some fine burritos at a little hole in the wall place in Ventura – muy bien amigos!
On the way home I drove up north of Santa Barbara (actually west) to have a look at some spots. El Capitan State Park features a perfect, zippery right point. It’s one of those not very often spots, and the waves it had today were sorta marginal, but there were a fair number of folks on them.
Still a chance.
Posted on October 16th, 2009 in South Carolina.Friday is looking to be gray and overcast in the morning but with offshore winds and a possible 2.5- 3 foot swell dropping during the day. Looking back, Thursday afternoon on the incoming tide was glassy and I see no reason not to expect a window of opportunity on Friday, but you will just have to check the local conditions.
For those near Charleston be sure to check out the Joe Hiller longboard surfing contest and surf expo on the Isle of palms. More info can be found atwww.charlestonwatersport.com.

Posted on October 16th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour. Most Popular Photos September 09 In Byron Bay Today. Well folks this is the last of the most popular photos In Byron Bay Today series for a few more months. It’s been an enjoyable trip down memory lane for us, and the feedback we’re getting suggests you guys are into it too. These are the shots that were most clicked on for September 09 you’ll notice the surf images are becoming less. This is because from September onwards we moved into spring, and spring means wind in Byron Bay. That’s just the way it is. We all still get waves, but not as many and not as often. However there is a bright side to this weather, it’s a great time for hunting down beach breaks at dawn or taking a walk to cape in the morn. Spring is the height of our whale watching season and it’s a joy to get out on the water and up close with some whales, In Byron Bay Today.
