La Conchita sesh

Hello Friends,
Swell perked a little over on this side of the pond. Got into the chest high range at some spots in northern Ventura county, but the tide was fighting it every step of the way. Water was exceptionally warm for this late in the year. I reckon it was pushing 19 at La Conchita where my pal Tim and I got a few waves on the dropping tide. La Conchita is yet another right point set up. It’s maybe 3 km south of Rincon and features an interesting top of the point take off zone under a long pier that runs out to an artificial island where they drill for oil (California is a major oil producing state still).

Anyway, we were messing about down the point from there. Waves were pretty soft and gutless despite the period getting up above the 10 sec mark. Really woulda been better on a mal than the 7S fishy I was using. Anyway, after we got outta the water, I went up to the top of the point and grabbed a few shots to share.

To round things off California style, my pal Guy and I went into Santa Barbara to the Soho cafe to watch a couple of amazing surf guitar players, Paul and Gil who gig under the name The Duotones. They have a funky little website where you can check out their stuff. They played all the biggies from the surf music era (Pipeline, Walk don’t run, Apache, Sleepwalk, Mr Moto, Baja, Perfidia, etc etc). Brilliant stuff.

Look for a beautiful day at the beach, but no surf on Thursday followed by an arriving swell 3+ foot early Friday morning.

Umm stay in bed

Yep after the brief small pulse yesterday arvo where we had some lovely clean 2 footers with no wind until that southerly came ripping through around 6pm we have nothing of interest this morning. Its small, onshore and prospects over the next few days are not great either. Oh well thems the breaks as they say. Do not forget though that its only one week until the big event at the Wharf Bar next Thursday for the Surfrider Foundation – who are all about the enjoyment and protection of the oceans and the beaches right here on the Northern Beaches.  Come along it should be a cracker with Goons of Doom heading the charge and some fantastic footage from Tim Bonython, a complimentary drink and some food as well – all for $25! Not too mention that there are lots of great items for auction – including a surftrip to the Maldives valued at $4,500 and some rgeat prizes!!!

Dee Why: Whales yes, surf no

Couple of visitors to Dee Why on Wednesday afternoon hung around out the back and made a bit of a splash for a couple of hours.

Thursday morning the surf is, well, unimpressive…

Overcast, dry and mild on the Central Coast this Thursday morning.  The swell ruffled at 1 – 3 feet from the southeast.  There is a light southeast breeze forecast to go east northeast later.  Low tide 0500 and high tide around 1130.  Local barometer 1019 hpa, 18 degrees C. 74% humidity.   Have a good one.

Early riser call for Thursday

At 0600 the swell is a gutless 6 sec period south at about 2 metres out at sea. Wind is SSE at 10-12 kts along the Sydney coastline. I reckon that will mean that it’s a pretty good day to miss the early.
Conditions don’t look like improving much at all as we head into the weekend. Maybe early next week we’ll get a little something…

Well there you go see what a little unorganised communal grovelling to the great and powerful Huey can do. We asked, we begged, we pleaded, and we finally had a few waves in Byron Bay. Ok, so it wasn’t perfect not even close.  However we Byronians are a resilient bunch. Many of us will surf just about anything. Plus the visitors, well many will paddle out if for no other reason than to say they surfed in Byron Bay. So was it good today? Well to be brutally honest, no not really. But that’s not what counts to us. What counts is that some of the crew got a few. They made the effort to get wet, to make the best of it and be grateful for what was on offer, In Byron Bay Today.
