Posted on October 26th, 2009 in Surf Reports.on sunday at 4 pm: 1 – 2 footers at chickens, at the lost village beach, a bit slow but pleasant – even slower at the superior firsts reef, to the east – and some solid offerings at seconds, to the west – three brethren and i lapped up the occasional offerings at chickens, under lashing rain – something long with barnacles surfaced, about 50 yards off – the last time that happened, in san diego, it was a whale – i know i’m close when i see the barnacles – i yelped, in umm welcome, and my brethren reassured me that our barnacled friends had been around all day, and were even graciously coming up to the boards – it was either, we know, a grey, a sperm or a humpback (not the latter!) – well, with these storms, expect continuing great conditions going forward – on saturday, there were even almost-rideable waves at the spit, in town – please stop at the region’s number one surf shop and local retailer of the year for 2008, Community One Boards and Apparel, the best equipment around and the best clothing in town – **********- and shall my desires flow like a fountain that i may fill their cups? – k gibran ….
Monday Arvo update
Posted on October 26th, 2009 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Wind is SE 18-26kts at 1400. Swell is 3+ metres SE with an average period of 8 seconds. Few light showers about.
To put it mildly, conditions are just awful.
So, how’s it look for the rest of the week?
Well, Tuesday’s looking like a choice of onshores and small, short period SE windswell (waist highish). Wednesday the wind’s supposed to go around to the east and NE and not get up to much more than seabreeze strength. Tide’ll be low at about 0943, so the morning sesh could be okay for catching a few little ones. At this stage I’m not overly hopeful though because the models seem to be calling for very short periods and generally east direction.
The models are showing a very brief long period one metre south pulse for Thursday arvo. If it happens, the late could be interesting at spots that like south and aren’t fussed by NE sea breezes.
Might still be a few scraps of the pulse left for the Friday daybreak crew…
Okay, buncha stuff happening this week for Sydney surfers. On Thursday the Wharf Bar at Manly will be jumpin’ for Surfrider Foundation Northern Beaches group’s first ever Beach Benefit Bash. All dough raised goes to Surfrider Foundation. It’s only $25 bucks in and that includes your first drink. There are door prizes, silent auctions and all that good stuff. I’ll be in attendance so say hi! (all details below)
Best plan is to get your tix sorted beforehand by booking on the Surfrider site
Among those contributing to the Thursday night good vibes will be the mighty Tim Bonython. Tim’s one busy guy too because this Weds the 28th he kicks off his 8th Australian Surf Movie Festival. Here’s how he describes it:
The theme of this year’s festival premiering on the 28th of October at the Randwick Ritz in Sydney is :
The Past, the Present & the Future.
I will be showing the best of some of my classics like the Hawaii Nine O series, Gripping Stuff, Biggest Wednesday, Download, Lost in Space & the Snuff series etc.
Some of those flicks are over 20 years old so you are going to notice the huge change in pretty well everything since then till now.
The Present, we look at all the amazing footage that I have shot from this year within Australia & overseas.
The Future is our finale with the best junior surfers in the nation been towed into the biggest waves ever surfed in an event in this country.
The shark-infested wave in South Australia rarely breaks but did with all its glory with 20 to 40 foot faces.
Simply amazing stuff & goes down as one of the greatest events & trips I have covered.
Also included is hot off the press footage shot of the heaviest session EVER at Shipsterns Bluff – featured on the Channel Nine News. The surfers were truly rattled by some of the most serious wipeouts ever out there.
I’ve got three pairs of tix to giveaway for the Randwick Ritz show. If you’d like a pair, be the first to shoot me your full name and contact mobile number. Please use our feedback page for this
I’ll give away some more tix in the next couple days…

Posted on October 26th, 2009 in South Carolina.Hope you caught some of that Sunday more glass. Monday will be blowing hard from the NE at 20+ mph which will keep the swell, but choppy conditions. I think Monday is pretty much a lost cause, but double check me. We could have some small stuff Tuesday, but it depends when the winds turn from the North.

Back in Sydney to…
Posted on October 26th, 2009 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Back in dear old Sydney once more. And what have we got in the way of a welcome home? Why howling SSE wind and junky windswell and rain, that’s what. The only live wind report I could find at report time was for Kurnell which was showing 19-26 kts of SSE. The MHL buoy was bobbing about in 3-5 metres of 8 sec period SSE windswell.
As far as Dee Why’s concerned, it’s not making for a pretty picture. Couldn’t see anyone in the water because it was so junky and messy. Water looks pretty woofy as well thanks to the run off. Will try to get a picture up later when the rain backs off…
And I’ll come back with some thoughts on the prospects too…
C C Storming it!

Simply Sunday In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on October 26th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour.Well it was just one of those classic almost Summer type of Sunday’s in Byron Bay today. No holidays, no festivals, no long weekends, and no special events, not many tourists. A simple sunny Sunday, with a little bit of swell and joyously warm weather. And didn’t the local families and the few visitors in town just lap it up. Quiet relaxing times, a few enjoyable slides, a bit of a float in the bay at high tide. While the smell of barbequing sausages gently wafts across the waves. It wasn’t big or particularly exciting, just relaxing and utterly beautiful, which is exactly the way this old salty dog loves it, In Byron Bay Today.

A southerly arrived early and laid waste to most surf options on Monday, but the east swell still had some legs and there were waves to be had at the Bower and Collaroy. So, I grabbed...
