Wave outlook thoughts

Posted on October 28th, 2009 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

Been having a look at the various charts and riffs thereon by surf forecasting sites. Basically it’s looking less than wonderful across the next few days for Sydney.

Right now the primary swell is a weak little 8 sec period number from the SSE at about a metre.  There is some 12 sec component in there which, since MHL doesn’t tell us a direction, we’ll assume is coming from the southerly quarters as well. It doesn’t seem to be producing much of anything extra though.

Tomorrow the models are showing a brief long period pulse but they’re a bit variable in the absolute value. It ranges from around 15 to 18 seconds and is set to be dead south. Since the height at sea is only forecast to be around a metre, I’m not getting too hopeful. If we get chest high sets by midday Thursday I’ll be stoked. With luck the pulse should extend through to Friday morning.

Winds on Thursday should be around the 5-10 kt range from the NE, and Friday is set to be NE 5-10 kts.

Tide’s set to be low mid morning-ish too, so the pre-lunch go-out could be best.

Here’s a little experiment… anyone should be able to choose ratings in the block below. The idea is to create a sort of hive mind prediction for surf quality across the next 24 hours. Just choose whatever you reckon is the most likely quality (more stars = better)

Not exactly huge at Dee Why point.

Don says he saw some chest high sets earlier — I must have been looking at the wrong times. Here’s about the biggest thing I’ve seen all morning. Might be a bit bigger up Longy way.

C C Small

Posted on October 28th, 2009 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this morning.  The swell is smooth, weak and small at 1 – 2 feet + from the east southeast.  There a light northwest breeze forecast to go northeast then southerly later.  High tide 0510 and low tide around 1045.  Local barometer 1020 hpa, 16 degrees C. 72% humidity.   Have a good one.

Small and Clean

Posted on October 28th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

We have a little bit of left over swell. Lets say its about 2 foot fairly clean and definitely rideable. Not the best waves you will ever see but still the odd fun one coming through! We have had a very light westerly wind all night which has really cleaned things up. Fingers crossed we avoid the rain today. Forecast is for a dieing SE swell of one metre and 10 knot NW’ers before a sea breeze develops later in the day.  Low tide is at 10:45am.

DO NOT FORGET THE GREAT EVENT HAPPENING AT OUR VERY OWN WHARF BAR TOM NIGHT. VERY NICE OF THEM TO  GIVE SURFRIDER SOME SPACE FOR SUCH A WICKED NIGHT!!!

Little lines about

Posted on October 28th, 2009 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

The numbers from the MHL buoy are pretty ordinary – only a metre of short period SE windswell for Sydney this morning. The early risers at Dee Why were on ‘em though because every now and then something sort’ve rideable was popping up. Biggest one I saw was maybe around the chest high mark and although it shutdown pretty quickly, the rider got a few quick turns in. The wind was not a factor early and is set to be out of the northern quarters today but not to get blowing too hard.

Sorry no pic just yet. Have a server issue to sort out first.

I’ll post this now and then come back in a bit with some thoughts about the outlook.

Synoptic Situation
A strong high located over the Bight extends a ridge through Bass Strait with a secondary high pressure centre in the Tasman Sea. A trough lies over northeastern New South Wales. A weak southerly change will move into the South Coast this morning, reaching Broken Bay during the evening or overnight and stalling. A weak low will develop off the central NSW coast overnight, but dissipate during Thursday as the High from the Bight moves into the southern Tasman Sea and strengthens. Northerly winds will redevelop in the south and continue through all waters into the weekend.

Reasons to be Cheerful In Byron Bay Today.

Well folks it’s been a while, but Huey finally blessed us with some thick juicy little suckers today. Yeah I’ve seen it better, much, much, much better. But hey this is spring, and in spring anything that looks rideable is reason enough to be cheerful, anything that resembles a barrel, doubly so. We pulled up and found the car park almost empty, most had a quick look and drove off again, you gotta love it :-) .

But we, like a few others, decided that such a glorious day was worthy of closer inspection. And thank Huey we did, because those that looked more carefully found many reasons to be cheerful, In Byron Bay Today.
