Look for a beautiful day at the beach, but no surf on Thursday followed by an arriving swell 3+ foot early Friday morning.

Umm stay in bed

Posted on October 22nd, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Yep after the brief small pulse yesterday arvo where we had some lovely clean 2 footers with no wind until that southerly came ripping through around 6pm we have nothing of interest this morning. Its small, onshore and prospects over the next few days are not great either. Oh well thems the breaks as they say. Do not forget though that its only one week until the big event at the Wharf Bar next Thursday for the Surfrider Foundation – who are all about the enjoyment and protection of the oceans and the beaches right here on the Northern Beaches.  Come along it should be a cracker with Goons of Doom heading the charge and some fantastic footage from Tim Bonython, a complimentary drink and some food as well – all for $25! Not too mention that there are lots of great items for auction – including a surftrip to the Maldives valued at $4,500 and some rgeat prizes!!!

Have yourself a great day.SRNB_invite#FINAL HIRES

Dee Why: Whales yes, surf no

Posted on October 22nd, 2009 in Dee Why.

Couple of visitors to Dee Why on Wednesday afternoon hung around out the back and made a bit of a splash for a couple of hours.

Thursday morning the surf is, well, unimpressive…

Early riser call for Thursday

Posted on October 22nd, 2009 in Big Picture.

At 0600 the swell is a gutless 6 sec period south at about 2 metres out at sea. Wind is SSE at 10-12 kts along the Sydney coastline. I reckon that will mean that it’s a pretty good day to miss the early.
Conditions don’t look like improving much at all as we head into the weekend. Maybe early next week we’ll get a little something…

From the Bureau…
Tides: H @1030, L @1714
Synoptic Situation
A southerly change will stall on the Mid North Coast today before weakening as the wind turns north to northeasterly ahead of another weak change which is expected to move up the south and central coasts during Friday then further northwards on Saturday. A strong southerly change will move along the South Coast late Saturday.
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Thursday until midnight: Wind: S/SE 15/20 knots, gradually easing to 10/15 knots in the morning and tending E/NE late afternoon/evening. Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres, abating to about 1 metre in the morning. Swell: SE 1 to 1.5 metres.
Friday: Wind: N/NE 5/10 knots, reaching 13/18 knots during the afternoon before a S’ly change 15/20 knots during the evening.Sea: about 1 metre, rising to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon/evening. Swell: S/SE less than 1 metre.
Saturday: Wind: S/SE 5/15 knots, turning NE 10/15 knots in the afternoon.
Forecast for Thursday
Mostly fine, just the chance of a light shower, mainly during the
morning. Light to moderate southeasterly winds, tending east to
northeast in the evening.

Ask and ye shall receive, well sort of, kind of, a bit, In Byron Bay Today.

Well there you go see what a little unorganised communal grovelling to the great and powerful Huey can do. We asked, we begged, we pleaded, and we finally had a few waves in Byron Bay. Ok, so it wasn’t perfect not even close.  However we Byronians are a resilient bunch. Many of us will surf just about anything. Plus the visitors, well many will paddle out if for no other reason than to say they surfed in Byron Bay. So was it good today? Well to be brutally honest, no not really. But that’s not what counts to us. What counts is that some of the crew got a few. They made the effort to get wet, to make the best of it and be grateful for what was on offer, In Byron Bay Today.

Tiny ones at the ‘con

Posted on October 21st, 2009 in Postcard.

Hello Friends,
Just another little postcard for ya from sunny southern California. Sounds like our weather’s not dissimilar to Sydney’s. “Surf” seems a pretty close match as well. A couple pals and I would not be put off, so we grabbed longboards and headed down to Rincon. Only three people in the water when we got there – for very good reason. Sets were struggling to get into the knee high range. But, as with places like the Pass, even when it’s really small, you can catch and ride them for a really long way. I reckon the critical part on my average wave was a zone about 10cm from top to bottom. If you could set the rail in there, your plank would just slide along smoothly. Turn off the line even slightly and you’d be sinking out or getting caught behind.

Water was really warm for here. Probably around the 18-20C mark and air temps were around 25. It was the first time I’ve been on a mal in awhile and it was a hoot. Anyway, here are a few snaps…
