Monday evening wrap: up for the early?

Posted on November 30th, 2009 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

Climbed up to the crows nest for one last look at the situation. The skies are darkening up, the wind is blowing pretty hard and there are occasional drops of rain. The ocean is grey and choppy inshore. Out at sea, the whitehorses are very close together across the broad and darkening plain.

Should one get up for the early, that is the question.

Let’s start with a look at the current state of play with the data from our friends at MHL.

The Sydney buoy was showing a couple metres of 7 second period south wind swell. Although this is up from a metre at 6 sec this morning, the consequence at a place like Dee Why is still only knee to waist high dribble. Wind is around the the 20 kt mark from the SSW.

Way down south, the Eden buoy trace shows that the swell went from around a metre at 7 seconds to 5 metres at 10 seconds as of about 1800.

Given the period (longer = faster), I’d guess that we will wake up to a lot more activity tomorrow morning. Whether it will get into the 5 metre range is another question, but I think it’s pretty safe to say it’ll be big.

The wildcard in the pack is going to be the wind. The latest from the Bureau is that we will have S-SW wind at 25-33 kts (ie, considerably stronger than what we’re getting now) and it calculates the swell will be in the 3-4 metre range.

Given the foregoing, my guess is that it will be a grey day with only a few surf options in the most protected corners. I would expect the surface conditions to be pretty messy even in those places. The open stretches will be Victory at Sea conditions.

The swell should drop at roughly the speed it came up and while it could still be pretty big on Weds, the wind is set to have more SE component. That means no real respite from the junky conditions. By all indicators we’re looking at big but not terribly clean waves Tue-Wed, then smaller with more easterly winds on Thursday.

We shall see!

If you’ve read this far, may I respectfully ask you to consider making a contribution to our 2009 RealSurf fundraiser? Even a tiny amount will be much appreciated.

cheers,
Don

A little something for the RealSurf project from you!

Hello Friends,

No sign of any significant swell this morning at Dee Why. But then again, the predictions have consistently been for the energy to start building late today.

The offshore data from the Sydney MHL buoy is showing a metre at an average of 6 seconds from the ESE. There is some longer period 11 sec stuff in the mix, so if you sit around long enough there could be the odd bigger set.

Down at Eden, MHL’s buoy is showing the swell jumping from around the same size at midnight to nearly three metres at the latest run of data. The period setting is still a very short 7 seconds though, so what’s showing down there isn’t groundswell. This is consistent with the various prediction models, which are currently showing the swell initially coming from the south at around 7 seconds.

Overnight, if all goes to according to the latest run of the models, the swell should push up into the three metre range as it moves around to the SSE and the period stretches out to 10-11 seconds.

Of course this energy is going to arrive with lots of wind. The Bureau’s saying that we’ll be looking at S-SW 20-30 kts from late today through Wednesday. And the weather will be grey and showery from the sound of it.

Naturally we’ll be keeping a close eye on things and of course I’ll be hoping to get a few pictures as well (I’ve got the new Canon 7D to test).

Synoptic Situation
A Low in the Tasman Sea to the east of Bass Strait is expected to remain semi stationary during today and Tuesday, moving only very slowly to the northeast, and then move further east during Wednesday. Meanwhile a High in the Bight is expected to pass over Tasmania on Tuesday and to the southeast of Tasmania on Wednesday. This will result in fresh to strong southerly winds along the New South Wales coast today and tomorrow, easing and turning more southeast on Wednesday.

GILMORE WINS 3RD CONSECUTIVE ASP WORLD TITLE

Stephanie Gilmore

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, November 28, 2009) – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, has claimed her third consecutive ASP Women’s World Title today, making history as the only surfer ever to win the prestigious crown each year they have competed at the elite ASP World Tour level (men’s or women’s).

The clinching was somewhat unexpected as today’s competition began with six surfers in contention for the 2009 ASP Women’s World Title. With each heat advancement and the narrowing of the field at the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, Event No. 6 of 7 on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour, the irrepressible Gilmore navigated her way to her third ASP Dream Tour Title.

“It’s surreal to win for a third time,” Gilmore said. “It’s amazing! I woke up this morning and knew it was going to be a good day. The waves were building and you sort of get that fuzzy feeling throughout the day. I really don’t even know what to think about it. I just want to thank everyone for the support that I’ve had throughout the whole year.”

Gilmore, who was focused on preparing for the Final at the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, had remained intentionally aloof to the ASP Women’s World Title possibilities on the final day of competition, and was surprised when informed she had clinched the historic crown.

“I didn’t even know it was happening,” Gilmore said. “I was preparing for the Final and gearing up and then to know I had won, my head was a bit light. To go to Honolua and not have to worry about the title going into the event is just so relaxing.”

The phenomenal natural-footer would go on to finish 3rd in the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, solidifying another sterling result on this season’s ASP Dream Tour, further cementing her position as the most dominant female surfer in the world.

“I’m starting to feel more comfortable on the Women’s World Tour and go into events differently,” Gilmore said. “You get to know the breaks and it’s still my third year and I love traveling and competing and it’s such a special thing to get paid to do. I’m looking forward to next year and seeing different conditions and different waves on tour, I think there might be a couple of new stops, so yeah, I’m looking forward to having good heats and good waves.”

Gilmore’s 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour Results:
Win at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast
Runner-Up at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells
     Beach
Runner-Up at the Commonwealth Bank Beachley
     Classic
Equal 5th Place Finish at the Rip Curl
     Pro Search
Runner-Up at the Movistar Peru Classic
3rd at the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach
TBD at the upcoming Billabong Pro Maui
While the ASP Women’s World Title has already been decided, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (an ASP Specialty Series) rages on with the final event of the year, the Billabong Pro Maui running at Honolua Bay from December 8 – 20, 2009.

Huey’s putting together a plan as we speak

Posted on November 30th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

2 feet of crud at the moment but the swell is forecast to grow rapidly into tomorrow and with the prospect of SSW winds no doubt the usual protected haunts will do the trick.  Keep an eye on the buoys overnight and there should be signs of activity by sundown today.  Sorry about the lack of reports lately but there’s been little point with Huey on holidays.  Enjoy.

I mean really Huey this is ridiculous, yes it’s still spring and we do expect the odd northerly blow to come howling through. But that was some wicked rush of air that was howling through town today. There were dreadlocked hippies were doing Medusa impersonations as their hair became  animated in the wind. Tourists got free skin exfoliation as they were  sandblasted walking up the beach. But there were waves. Now I know there will be those that will argue with me. There were plenty of people complaining about the lack of surf. It’s a fact that the most obvious spot, out of the wind was producing very average conditions at best. But I’m a great believer in thinking outside of the box. So we went and had a look were nobody else did, and guess what? We scored. There were some pretty funky looking waves. Yeah it was twisted, bumpy and had a bloody strong sweep, definitely not for the beginners. But for us, there were empty waves going begging on a hot sunny Sunday, and that’s not something you don’t hear of very often In Byron Bay Today.

Nothing much in the way of waves this morning at Dee Why.

Nothing much in the way of waves this morning at Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Still in a holding pattern where the surf’s concerned. And I think that’s what we can expect for the rest of the day in Sydney. There’s only a very tiny south windswell around at the moment and its definitely too small to produce anything at the south end of the Dee Why to Longy stretch. There might possibly be some barely surfable dribblers up the beach, but you’ll want your most buoyant option.

As so often happens, as we get closer to a swell event, the forecast models get a bit more conservative on the size estimate. As the Bureau’s call below suggests, it now looks as though the swell will start to fill in late tomorrow afternoon (although, with luck we’ll see some forerunners by midday).

The models say we can expect the energy be here in full force by Tuesday morning. At this stage the call is for 3-4 metres of SSE swell at about 11-12 sec. The wind is set to be strong and from the SW-SE. Exposed spots could see wave faces into the double overhead range.

Wednesday should see a slight decrease in swell power and winds more steadily out of the south. There should still be juice in the tank for Thursday, but the wind call is currently for easterlies, so I’d say the early will be the plan.

Great to have some solid swell in prospect, even if the wind is likely to be an issue at lots of places.

Have yourself a great Sunday and I’ll try to get back later with a tweak on the outlook for the week ahead.

The Sunday Post

Posted on November 29th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.
What a good weekend for getting out and getting wet. And if size wasn’t an issue for you then you were rewarded with nice set waves forming on a couple of very obliging banks. We were blessed with a nice off-shore today which somehow managed to keep the dust at bay. The offshore held on until 130ish  and right on queue the westerly was replaced with a beautifully cool southerly which was welcome relief for everyone.
The highlight of the weekend of course the Womens national final of the Jim Beam Surtag series where the ladies put on a great show.
And it looks like we’re in for a rather large uptick in swell over the next few days so let’s hope the wind doesn’t wreak too much havoc and rain on our parade.
Go well!
Cheers,
Doug
