Hello Friends,

35. That’s the call for the coast today in Sydney. Sadly we really don’t seem to have much in the way of waves. Dominant swell direction is southerly and the period spread’s not too bad (9-12s), but the height at sea is less than a metre.

As I write this, there’s no sign of the predicted southerly front (see below for BoM forecast) in the wind reports from the far south of the state. The Eden buoy has bumped up by roughly a metre, but that’s coincided with a drop from a gutless 7 seconds to a really gutless 5 sec. No macking south swell in those numbers, that’s for sure.

The WAMs are showing a little pulse developing tomorrow afternoon for the Sydney region. With luck it’ll get into the solidly surfable range. Right now I’m hoping for something into the head high range on the bigger sets after lunch on Wednesday. The problem is that the wind forecast is not looking good. Basically we’re facing steady winds from the SE around to the NE. So, pretty likely to be junky onshore conditions.

Outlook thereafter is for small short period east windswell conditions through the weekend. Figure knee to waist high with bomb sets to shoulder high – if we’re lucky.

Good luck to all my fellow once a year punters on the Cup. I wonder how the RealSurf poll will go this time around…

Synoptic Situation
A vigorous cold front will move up the southern half of the coast during Tuesday with northwest to northerly winds strengthening before a strong to gale force southwest to southerly change. The change is expected at Green Cape late morning, Moruya by late afternoon, then move up the Sydney and Illawarra coasts during the late afternoon or early part of the evening, reaching Newcastle by midnight. The change will weaken as it moves north along the Mid North Coast early Wednesday, reaching Ballina by about midday Wednesday and stalling. A high pressure system will strengthen in the Bight during Thursday and move across into the southern Tasman Sea on Friday.

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Gale Warning
Tuesday until midnight: Wind: N/NW 8/13 knots at first, increasing to 15/20 knots during the morning, then to 20/25 knots during the afternoon. A S/SW change knots late afternoon/evening, possibly 30/35 knots initially, then easing to 25/30 knots. Sea: 1 to 2 metres, rising to 2.5 to 3.5 metres during the afternoon/evening. Swell: Confused 0.5 to 1 metre. Isolated late thunderstorms.
Wednesday: Wind: S/SE 20/30 knots, easing to SE 10/15 knots by the afternoon, tending E/NE later.Sea: 2 to 3 metres, abating to about 1 metre by the afternoon.Swell: S 2 to 2.5 metres.

“We All Use The Same Ocean” Message Heard On The Northern Beaches.

“We All Use The Same Ocean” Message Heard On The Northern Beaches.

Over 270 souls turned out to pay respect to the beaches and sea at Surfrider Foundation’s Northern Beaches inaugural annual fundraiser, proving that quite a few of us do indeed respect the fact we all use the same ocean.

Bridging the brief gap between Layne’s annual WCT contribution and the upcoming Manly Festival of Surfing, the event netted an astounding and much needed $16,500, the sum of which goes to Surfrider Foundation Australia, who takes it to the beach in action that runs the gamut from lobbying to preserve surf breaks to beach rubbish clean-ups.

Officially, Surfrider advises it’s a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Australia’s oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, which essentially translates to: a group of people who surf and are keen to give back to something that was given to them. They’re a staggeringly small group and yes, there’s plenty of room for more.

If you missed the festivities this year, don’t in 2010. Think: Tim Bonython films on the big screen, Northern Beaches’ doyenne of funny Wendy Harmer on the mike, Ozzy Wright and the boys (now 5 strong—again) running through Goons Of Doom riffs that got the crowd moving. And prizes partygoers really, really wanted to win. (Just ask supporter Althea who bid for and scored a trip to the Maldives.) Not to mention some notable names in both politics and surfing who also turned up at the Wharf Bar Hotel to show their support.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Surfrider Foundation Australia General Manager Kristy Theissling. “The support and contribution that the Northern Beaches locals gave, both businesses and individuals, was very encouraging. It really shows how much preserving and protecting our beaches means to the community. The crew behind this event all put in long, hard voluntary hours that resulted in a fantastic outcome. We consider the evening a great success and already are looking forward to next year’s.”

A Surfrider membership can be anyone’s for as little as $45 by visiting at www.surfrider.org.au or stopping by their booth at A Day at the Park in Cronulla on 14 November.

North Winds still.

Posted on November 3rd, 2009 in South Carolina.

So for Tuesday its not at all unreasonable to find offshore winds and the small 2 foot bump like we had on Monday. The best time would be after 7:30 am as the higher than average tide is going out. That will give you most of the early day to check the cameras and see if its worth dargging your bigest board out for a ride.

Manly is definitely no stranger to surfboard displays. But take a walk around town from now until 9 November and you’ll see some pretty unusual looking ones in the windows of local shops and restaurants.

These surfboards have been painted and sculpted by some of the best local artists and will be out on display for you to enjoy throughout the Manly Festival of Surfing.

Then, they’ll go into hiding until Monday, 30 November. That night, the Global Surf Industries will host a live auction at the Steyne Hotel and all proceeds will go to the Disabled Surfers Association and Surfaid.

Global Surf Industries, once again, shows their big heart. This is the second year that they have pioneered this event and donated the 30 free surfboards for artists to paint and sculpt.

AUCTION DETAILS:

To place a silent bid, check them out and make your bid at our on-line gallery!

OR attend the final live auction on Monday 30 November at The Steyne Hotel.

On-line bidding closes 4pm (est) Monday 30 November.

Coco Ho Claims First ASP Dream Tour Victory at Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search

BELGAS, Peniche/Portugal (Thursday, October 29, 2009) – Coco Ho (HAW), 18, 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie, collected her inaugural victory on the ASP Women’s World Tour today, taking out the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search over former ASP Women’s World Champion (2005) Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 26, in punchy two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at Belgas.

Event No. 4 of 7 on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search saw some of the best conditions of the year at the backup venue of Belgas, and throughout the two days of competition, it was the youngster Ho who proved most adept at navigating the hollow beachbreak peaks.

Ho exercised excellent judgment in the Final, patiently waiting while her elder opponent kept herself busy. With conditions deteriorating, the young Hawaiian let loose with a barrage of backhand hits on the dumpy lefthanders, collecting a 7.50 and an 8.33 to combo Hedges and take the win.

“I knew Chelsea (Hedges) would be dangerous on the left after seeing her this morning getting those barrels,” Ho said. “This afternoon it turned into a more rippable wave and it was hard on the forehand, but I was lucky to get the waves I did.”

With this win, Ho moves from 5th to 3rd on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings and announces herself as a major force heading into the final three events of the year.

“It feels so good to be on top,” Ho said. “I’m trying not to think about too much. I love my trophy. When I started the year, I set a goal to make Quarterfinals or better at every event in order finish Top 5 by the end of the year, and I’m doing my best to accomplish that.”

For Hedges, today’s return to form marks the first time the inspiring goofy-footer has seen a Finals’ berth since 2007, and moves her from 8th to 6th on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour ratings. Her dominance in the earlier rounds of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search cannot be overlooked as she consistently dominated the playful pits of Belgas, even eliminating reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current ASP Women’s World No. 1, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, in the Quarterfinals.

“It was close but no cigar,” Hedges said. “It feels good to be back on the podium. It’s my best result this year. I came into the event forgetting about world titles and just wanted to improve on my results. Coco (Ho) was ripping and she got the better waves out there this afternoon. I am happy with my 2nd and I will work on that from here.”

The former ASP Women’s World Champion took a sabbatical from competition in 2008 to give birth to a daughter, Meika, and was given the ASP Women’s World Tour wildcard to compete this season. Today’s Runner-Up finish is Hedges’s best of the season, and she’ll be a major threat in the final three events of the season.

“This year, I was kind of questioning my ability a bit at the first event with these young girls like Coco (Ho) and Sally (Fitzgibbons),” Hedges said. “They are surfing so good and it really pushes my surfing and makes me look at what I am doing. It felt really good to take out Steph (Gilmore). She is the best out there in my opinion, her surfing still has that little edge. I still feel that, come the end of the year, she is going to be the one to beat.”

Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), 22, was the surprise juggernaut of the event, claiming three heats today before falling to eventual Runner-Up Hedges in the Semifinals. Despite missing out on a Final’s berth, Hodge took some major scalps in the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search and moved from 12th to 11th on 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour.

“I’m really very happy with my performance in Portugal,” Hodge said. “It’s been a very important competition for me with the WQS having already finished. I need some good results in the last four events and this event has given me a good start.”

Silvana Lima (BRA), 25, current ASP Women’s World No. 2, was in impressive form throughout the final day of competition, edging past Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 23, before dispatching of Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 18, in the Quarterfinals. Although failing to advance past eventual winner Ho, Lima’s Semifinal finish moved her even closer to Gilmore in the race for the 2009 ASP Women’s World Title.

“For sure I am happy with making the Semis here,” Lima said. “The conditions got pretty tough towards the end, but I’m happy with my result and looking forward to the next event. I saw Steph (Gilmore) lose to Chelsea (Hedges) but it doesn’t change the way I surf. I just surf my heat. Steph is an amazing surfer and competing against her this year is great. She is so powerful and it’s so good for surfing. This year I’m a lot more focused and I think that’s why I am doing better.”

The next stop on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour will be the Movistar Peru Classic presented by Rip Curl from November 3 through 8, 2009 at Lobitos in Northern Peru.

The ASP Top 17 will be traversing the Atlantic en route to South America in the next couple of days to contest the long, lefthand points of Peru.

PASTA POINT, Chaaya Island/Dhonveli Maldives (Thursday, October 29, 2009) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Oxbow World Longboard Tour Maldives event today crowned two champions – Harley Ingeby (Australia) as the 2009 ASP World Longboard Champion and Kai Sallas (Hawaii) as the inaugural Oxbow Maldives event champion.

Sallas (Oahu, Hawaii) won the event, surfing clean three feet (1 metre) surf at Pasta Point, defeating Australasia’s Harley Ingelby in a high-scoring Final that saw Sallas take the win with a combined two-wave tally of 15.65 to Ingelby on 14.00.

Ingeby’s second placing in today’s final event on the two-event 2009 ASP World Longboard Tour secured him the ASP World Longboard Title.

“I’m so stoked to win this event,” Sallas said. “The waves have been super fun all week and to beat Harley in the final capped off a perfect week for me. “I started well with 7.65 on my first ride and felt confident that I could back that ride up and take the win, Ingelby came at me hard in the final few minutes but my best ride was my final one and it’s great to win and actually beat the current world champion as well!”

The ASP World Longboard Champion is decided across the ratings from two events and Ingelby’s 1st placing in the season’s opening event in Japan along with his 2nd place here in the Maldives earned him his inaugural ASP World Title.

“It’s the best day of my life,” Ingelby said. “I’ve been close to winning in the past and always felt I could win the title but I’ve also seen many great surfers not win world titles and I was wary that the opportunity could slip – It’s a huge weight off my shoulders and right now the feeling is unbelievable.”

Ingelby secured the world title early in the day when he defeated Brazilian Phil Rajzman in a very close seesawing Quarterfinal.

“It would have been great to take the event win as well as the world title but full marks to Sallas, he surfed a great final and he deserved the win as he’s been a standout all week,” Ingelby said. “I really left my run in the final late, I don’t think I had one decent score in the first 20 minutes, when I did get that 8 point ride late in the final I was a real chance but simply could not find a wave to deliver a decent second score.”

Today’s Semifinals were both tightly fought out with Sallas defeating fellow Hawaiian Ned Snow while Ingelby survived a late challenge in his semi final from French surfer Antoine Delpero winning on a score-line of 14.80 to Delpero on 14.35.

With excellent surf throughout the event all surfers enjoyed a great week and it was a fitting finale to the ASP Oxbow Longboard World Tour for 2009.

Ummm not too flash

Posted on November 3rd, 2009 in Manly.

Infact you might as well call it Lake Manly this morning. A very sad state of affairs. There are a few very keen punters out there enjoying the lovely morning conditions but to behonest I would not waste your time.  I really hate this time of year. The weather changes 15 degree’s in 12 hours and the only reliable thing about the surf is that its inconsistent!! Oh well thems the breaks – we know it does this every year so we can not get too upset about it. It looks like we may get ourselves a little boost from the South tom but it won’t be a world class swell by any stretch of the imagination. Forget surfing today, get to work early so you are ready to finish up at 1pm. Good luck with the gg’s today. Wonder if the old master Bart can do it again.
