Hello Friends,

How’s the week shaping up for ya? Weren’t planning on surfing every day I hope. It looks like this morning is about as good as it’ll get for at least the next 4-5 days. And it ain’t that amazing either.

Primary (wind)swell direction is easterly and from Eden to the Qld border it’s not much better than a metre at sea. Periods range from 6 to 8 seconds. Sydney’s at the high end of the scale, so surf conditions at our east facing stretches are probably about as good as anywhere in the state… if that makes you feel better!

on sunday at 5 pm: up to 2.5 times over head at our rivermouth point – great, crashing, blustery, foaming long lines, sweeping over and burying the point, so that we had to enter deep in the river mouth – i stayed comfortably cautious, taking high banks from the biggest breakers: about 6 in all, including one long one along the top, and a few closed-out into the point – good conditions should prevail for days at our rivermouth point, which comes alight too rarely in the year, being the 1st surfable beach, proceeding down the straits – on days like today, our rivermouth suddenly becomes a world-class point break, due in particular to the even, crisp, cobbled reef – heavy surfmobile traffic on the drive down, suggests that many brethren had proceeded further, to the lost village beach, or right to the straits mouth, at the fishing port – stormy and chilly, heavy rain with sunny intervals: altogether ripe and propitious – **********- am i a harp that the hand of the mighty may touch me, or a flute that his breath may pass through me? – k gibran …. ********** twitter: mercuryloge \,,/

Should be an Interesting week.

Starting with Monday expect Easterly winds building a wind swell peaking by Wednesday as what is expected to be the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida forming into a Nor easter later in the week off the coast. So we may have wind and swell, the question remains if it will be too rough to ride.

Bye-Bye Summer, Hello Fall (Capitola)

Posted on November 9th, 2009 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions.
It's no use pretending anymore; summer has gone. Surf heights have risen as the air and water temperatures have fallen. A big swell hit northern California this weekend, large enough that there was briefly talk of holding the Mavericks surf contest. At midnight on Friday, the Half Moon Bay buoy read 27.6 ft @ 16.7 sec, the largest waves in the country at the time. I saw an outer reef breaking in Half Moon Bay that I've never seen before. Most of the coast was unsurfable for "the rest of us," as Manabu would say. So along with many others, I sought shelter and a size knock-down in Monterey Bay.

Capitola looked nice on the cams yesterday, up to head high on sets, but crowded. I got there not too far past dawn, but soon thereafter counted 50 people out. Sigh.

The waves were slow and moundy, but I parked the fish next to the jetty proper where they had a bit more shape and push. I caught a handful, most seconds before they closed out, always a challenge, and got one tiny ride. It was a chilly morning, with the sun promising to emerge from the clouds but not fully doing so, and there were long cold lulls between sets. I managed to stay out for almost an hour and a half until I had to leave, but by then I was shivering and the bottoms of my feet were frozen popsicles, too numb to feel. It's time to break out thicker rubber and a thermal rashie.

Apologies for the inconvenient water droplet. I remembered to clean the lens, after I shot this. D'oh!

After surfing, I met up with Luke and Beth, and, more importantly, Beth's magic surfboard, at the Arrow Surf Shop factory to order my new board, a clone of Beth's which has brought me oodles of fun when I borrowed it. Bob the shaper asked many questions, trying to nail down what I really wanted, which boiled down to: exactly the same board, but in epoxy and with Future fins, the later based on input from some more experienced surfers. When I mentioned epoxy, as opposed to fiberglass in the lay meaning of the words, he launched into a detailed explanation of the correct technical distinctions. But in the end, we still settled on epoxy, which will be lighter and more durable than the original, although he cautioned me repeatedly about its sensitivity to heat. Contrary to my belief that Beth's board is something unusual, Bob told me it's a pretty standard hybrid, except for an inch or so more rocker. He offered to reduce that back to typical but said it would offer minimal benefit, so I told him to stick with the original design as it works so well for me. I still need to close with him on the aesthetics, what airbrushing I want to pretty-up the deck. Best part? It will be done in 3-4 weeks. Soon after I get back from the Land Down Under, I'll have a new surfboard!

It’s A Tough Life For Some, In Byron Bay Today. Sarcastic, who me? Nah, really  it’s not as easy to live here, as many people think. The rent prices and cost of housing are just ridiculous, and the opportunities to make a living are rare and few. And yes the lack of parking can get ya goat occasionally too. But when all is said and done if you’re willing to pay the price of financial and parking insecurity, then there are rewards for a life lived here. There’s community, yeah it’s still here if you bother to look. There’s the waves, which let’s face it, are about as good for logging as it gets. Plus there are the characters, and if there’s one thing we’re not short of , it’s our local characters. So let’s firstly welcome back two of them, Yup Evan has returned from Indo, only to land himself bang smack in perfect log surf at home, hence today’s title. Plus Marty our local celebrity thespian has returned from yet another film set at some exotic location. Welcome home  blokes.  We’d also like to introduce you all to one of the quiet achievers in the Byron Shire. Bloke’s name is Brent Verco, from Mullumbimby Chiropractic. Check out his review  Brent will be offering some seriously good deals and freebees to you guys, but we’ll get into that later in the week. In the mean time, we hope you enjoy today’s update; we were blessed with beautiful slides and fantastic weather. Oh yes indeed, it truly is a tough life for us here, In Byron Bay Today.
