On the fade, but not gone

Posted on November 19th, 2009 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Back from the little sortie down the coast to find a few wee scraps of swell still coming in to Dee Why. It’s in the waist high range, but because the MHL buoy is still showing some 13 second component, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the very occasional bomb set that was a bit bigger than that.

The trend lines are all pointing toward small conditions through the weekend. Basically it looks as though we’ll only have weak and small mainly ENE short period windswell.

I didn’t get a chance to finish up my mini-blog of the trip down south yesterday as it was my turn to drive. After leaving Ulladulla we decided to check in on summercloud bay. Neither of us had been there in a decade or two, but it’s basically just exactly the same – right down to the tradition of leaving your car obviously open. Clearly the rip off situation is the same as it was back in the 70′s when I first visited the place.

After making the longish walk through the bush to that famous broad rock platform, we discovered that the NE wind had really picked up and was blasting along at 30+ knots. That didn’t deter a pack of 30+ mainly bodyboarders who were furiously paddling into the very consistent head high plus sets. I got a bunch of pictures which I’ll turn into a gallery later…

Gotta jam, more later today.

Going for ordinary

Posted on November 19th, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Returning from an editorial meeting for the next issue of Photo Review, I went by Curly and Dee Why to have a gink at the state of play. It was a bit before 3 pm and the NE wind was getting up into the forecast 15-20 kt range. There were a few bods in the water at mid-Curly but the energy levels seem to have dropped quite a bit. The MHL data for Sydney is showing a metre of SE windswell at around 7 seconds apart. There is some 12 second stuff in there as well, but I couldn’t see any real sign of it. Sets were struggling to get chest high (see the pic), and only then for a few moments. Around at Dee Why it looked quite a bit smaller than the junky stuff Barry and I briefly sampled this morning.

My expectation is that it’s likely to be small tomorrow morning, but with luck it will still be sort of catchable at exposed spots. The wind’s set to be NW early, and then to swing to the NE and pick up into the same sort of speeds experienced this afternoon. Right now Saturday and Sunday look to be around about the same.

Hope to have some pics from summercloud bay up a little later…

In the meantime, go well with all your plans!

Looks like near calm NW winds for most of Thursday with just under a 3 foot bump. So if you got a log, drag it to the beach Thursday.

Pleasure & Pain, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on November 19th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour.

 in_byron_bay_today_181109_www.inbyronbaytoday.com_2009

It was a glorious day, the southerly blew, the local crew came down from the hills for a few slides and there was much rejoicing. All was going well in Byron Bay today. But the ratio of beginners on hire boards with little to nil surfing experience was slowly increasing. Unfortunately that’s often a recipe for injury. Then it happened. An unassuming and unsuspecting chap turned up on a hired S.U.P (stand up paddleboard) eventually dropped in on one of the local ladies Deb. While at the same time, another bloke on another hired board dropped in on her from behind. Wedged between the two utterly inexperienced surfers, Deb was forced off her board and jammed into a rock receiving a smashed heel, a stay in hospital and of course several months now to come, of painful rehabilitation. As for this incident, well yes it was an accident and accidents do happen. But there are deeper underlying issues here, Issues often spoken of quietly in the car park at The Pass and occasionally loudly with the frustration born of near misses and the fear of injury. So what now? Well for Deb, who was so much looking forward to summer, it doesn’t look good. As for the blokes on Hire Boards? Well one ran away, there’s no honour in that, while the other, was traumatised by the experience as well. Nobody seems to profit from this experience, except perhaps the people who hire the boards to absolute novices in the first place? So what next, who knows? I suspect this is not the last we’ll hear of this or similar incidents, although I sincerely hope we see no more of this, In Byron Bay Today.  Deb, we are all wishing you a speedy recovery.
