At last
Posted on November 27th, 2009 in Manly. Some real quality out there!!! Woke up feeling a little shady after a few too many at the Wharf last night to be greeted by some lovely 3 ft perfection. There is an insane bank just south of North Steyne thats sucking the swell in almost perfectly. Lovely peaky hollow 3ft’ers flying in. One thing seemed pretty clear though – that the unemployment rate in Manly must be well above the nations average! Or maybe its just that the dreaded influx of summer backpackers is now in full swing. All they need to do now is learn not to drop in. Get yrself out there for some magic as the offshore wind is hanging in there.

Posted on November 27th, 2009 in Surf Reports. Finally some swell. It’s outta the Nth East, but only 8 seconds, so not super-punchy. SW winds do it some justice though. Maybe shoulder high on the big ones

It’s an ordinary old morning
Posted on November 26th, 2009 in Big Picture, Surf Reports.Hello Friends,
Huey is not smiling kindly upon the east coast of Australia this morning. Here in Sydney we have about a metre of 6 sec period NE windswell. Great keeness is required for these conditions. However, there is a glimmer of hope for improvement early next week.
It looks as though we have to put up with tiny ENE conditions through about Sunday, but then (assuming the models have it right) we might have some solid south to the SSE swell – with stiff south to SSW wind.
The usual caveat applies, namely that this is a best-guess estimate arising out of computer models. Your mileage may vary. Interesting though how often those models basically get it pretty close to right. Over the last decade plus of working on this site, it seems to me that they’ve definitely improved their accuracy.
So, between now and next Monday, it looks like we can all carry on as we were. But I’d be keeping the schedule in flexy mode…
Go well with your plans today, and if you have time, have a squizz at the new Friends of RealSurf shop…

Peaceful Moments, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on November 26th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour. There were some very nice waves wrapping past the cape in Byron Bay today. So what’s so unusual about that? Well it was sunny, warm, consistent with crystal clear water the town is full of schoolies and tourists, yet it was utterly uncrowded all day until the afternoon crew turned up after work. So why so empty? Simple the Coastalwatch camera was offline this morning. End of argument, I’ve seen this before we’ll see it again. They go down the crowd goes down. When it’s offline, we get uncrowded waves. Funny isn’t it? When we were kids we used to have a blast cruising around in beat up old cars with our crew of blokes and girls. The surf check was all part of the ritual; it was as much a part of surfing as getting waves. These days, people go online and if the cameras are down, they don’t turn up, kinda lucky for us really. Maybe they assume the surf just disappeared along with the camera, who knows? What I do know is this. Those who still do a surf check the old way, by actually getting up from the screen and turning up to look, were rewarded for their efforts. There were some mighty happy people who were very grateful indeed for, a peaceful moment delivered by the failure of a certain streaming video camera, In Byron Bay Today.
Afternoon update
Posted on November 25th, 2009 in North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Gee, I wish I had some exciting news for you on the surf front. But sadly, I don’t. Just had a look the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch and can report that you will need to be exceptionally keen to attempt surfing. There were a few bods in the water up toward Northy chasing sub waist high sets. Down toward the Gardens the only person I saw in the water appeared to be riding an airplane wing of some sort (see pic). The light ENE sea breeze was adding its special touches to the generally lacklustre conditions. Still, the sun is shining, so it’s a pretty enough day out. Should be a pleasant evening too methinks….
Outlook for tomorrow morning will be more of the same I think. The weak little one metre windswell could be more around to the east and north east, so maybe there’ll be something just barely catchable at exposed stretches.
Have yourself a top evening!
