Going out with a whimper
Posted on December 31st, 2009 in At large.Hello Friends,
So, the last day of 2009 eh? Not much on the surf front anywhere in Oz apparently. About your best hope for a wave is on the far north coast of NSW this morning. But, according to The Beach Defender whom I spoke with this morning from the banks of the Maroochy river, conditions on the Sunshine coast are sloppy, very small and onshore. So, the point is I guess, wherever you find yourself, you ain’t missing much.
The weak little east windswell seems to prevail pretty much up and down the eastern seaboard this morning. In Sydney the MHL buoy is showing a metre of 8 second period stuff from the east.
A quick scan of the models suggest that we’re looking at continuing weak conditions for the week ahead. There seems to be some agreement among the interpretations that we might get a little south-ish pulse in Sydney on Sunday following a change late Saturday. Here’s hoping!
Oh, and have yourself a great and safe New Year’s Eve.

Hello Friends
Seems as that we have another day of microness in Sydney. The MHL buoy is showing about a metre from the south at around 6 seconds apart – much the same as it’s been for the last few days. So another day of nothing much in the way of wave options. Go for a fitness paddle or a swim or snorkle eh? Should be fine, sunny and 25 so it’ll be a good day to get outdoors even if surfing’s not happening.
From the leatest run of the models, it looks as though there might possibly be a little something around from the NE on New Year’s Day, but I think if there is, it’ll be marginal waist high stuff for the most part. At the outer limit of the prediction range, some interpretations of the data are showing a small south pulse around Sunday. The most optimistic of these reckons shoulder high is a possibility for south spots. We can hope I guess!
Anyway, enjoy the day and go well with your plans.
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Wednesday until midnight: Wind: S/SE 10/15 knots tending E/NE in the afternoon.Sea: about 1 metre.Swell: E/SE about 1.5 metres.
Thursday: Wind: N/NE 10/15 knots freshening to 15/20 knots in the afternoon and reaching 20/25 knots later. Sea: about 1 metre rising to 1.5 to 2 metres in the afternoon. Swell: E about 1 metre.
Friday: Wind: NW/NE 10/20 knots.

November Favourites For 2009, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 30th, 2009 in Byron.Well folks it’s that time of year again for us here, In Byron Bay Today. It’s that time when we bring you a few updates of the images you’ve clicked on the most. Today it’s the best of November 2009 as you guys saw it. These are the shots you folks were really into. I still notice there are no shots of me in there, but I almost made it in this time, a bit well sort of. I mentioned yesterday that some folks are calling it the worst spring season for surf ever on the east coast of Australia. They’re saying there have been no good waves anywhere. I really don’t know where people come up with this stuff. Sure there have been moments when it’s been a tad small and windy, but there have still been heaps of rideable waves for the entire season of spring. Or at least that’s the way we saw it, In Byron Bay Today. Don’t forget to check The Top Shop in our Latest Reviews.
Well, at least it’s not raining
Posted on December 29th, 2009 in At large.Hello Friends,
Looks as though the weather in Sydney this morning is a considerable improvement on yesterday. Unfortunately the same does not appear to apply to the waves. The MHL buoy is showing a metre of 6sec period dribble from the south. Not the best prospect for a wave sadly. In fact, if you can get anything to propel you toward the sand this morning in Sydney, I’d be most impressed.
Outlook for the remainder of the week is still pretty sad. As the Goat often says under these circumstances, more of the same, up and down a bit.
Hope you’re having a top old day and that all goes well.

Your Favourites October 2009, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 29th, 2009 in Byron. It’s that time when we bring you a few updates of the images you’ve clicked on the most. Today it’s the best of October 2009 as you guys saw it. These are the shots you folks were really into. I notice there are no shots of me in there, typical, just ragging you guys. I read on another website recently that it’s been one of the worst spring seasons for surf ever on the east coast of Australia. That they say there has been no good waves anywhere. Well I beg to differ, Ok so it hasn’t been huge and it was windy. But we documented many of the local crew getting some pretty decent waves, Loggers, Little White Boards and everything in between. Whatever trip they were on calling it a no surf spring, I’m grateful the crew here both local and visitors alike make the effort to see things just little positively. Sure there have been moments when it’s been a tad small and pretty blowy, but there have still been rideable waves for the entire season of spring. Or at least that’s the way we saw it, In Byron Bay Today.
Rainy
Posted on December 28th, 2009 in At large.Hello Friends,
As I write this the weather radar shows another band of showers approaching Sydney. Not the greatest day to be looking for a wave. And, from the look of the buoy data, not a day when you’d find much of anything anyway. The wind swell is coming mainly from the SE at about a metre at 6 seconds apart. Those numbers say that it’s just about flat, and with the rain and general gloom, I’d guess there won’t be too many boards making it to the water today.
Outlook for the next week appears little changed from yesterday’s prognosis – ie another 7 days of more or less the same thing.
Ah well. Have yourself a great day anyway!
Synoptic Situation
A trough of low pressure is expected to remain in the vicinity of Seal Rocks until late Monday, maintaining north to northeast winds about the Mid North and Far North coasts and south to southeast winds about the Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra and South coasts. The trough will progress further north later on Monday and Tuesday, extending southerly winds to the Far North coast. A high pressure system moving into the Tasman Sea on Wednesday will result in an east to northeasterly airstream.
