A bit disappointing
Posted on December 1st, 2009 in At large, Collaroy.Hello Friends,
Had one of those days when I just couldn’t reconcile my hopes with the reality. You know the deal I’m sure. Looked at Dee Why point, Collaroy, the Bower and Manly. None could persuade me to pull on the wetty.
It was a funny sort of day. There were waves around and in some places pretty big, but the quality just wasn’t enough to entice this correspondent.
I took pictures at Dee Why and Collaroy, but I didn’t get too many keepers. Waves were sectiony, often flabby and with the grey skies, rarely photogenic.
Still, I did pick out a couple to share. I took them with a Canon 7D that I have in for review at the moment. I like the speedy autofocus and the built in HD video is kinda cool as well. In fact, as an experiment I shot a wave at Dee Why which should be viewable below I hope.
By the time it got dark, the swell had moved slightly more to the SE. The period is hovering around the 9 second mark and the average size at sea is a touch over 3 metres.
I’m therefore quite confident that we’ll have something again tomorrow. The latest call from the Bureau for the Sydney region is for 20-30 kts of S-SW wind early, but it’s due to swing S-SE during the morning. Given that the tide’s going to be high early, we could face similar challenges vis a vis quality.
Here’s hoping Huey will smile upon us all!

Full early, but some size around
Posted on December 1st, 2009 in At large, Dee Why, Long Reef, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
High tide and south swell is not perhaps the ideal combo. Having peaked during the dark hours, it was averaging around the 3 metre mark out at sea with a period of about 9 seconds. Some energy was getting into the south end of the Collaroy Narrabeen stretch, but by the time you were at the Kick, it was maybe knee to waist high. Around the corner at Long Reef bombies the sets were probably in the 8-10 foot faces range but no one was out, so I couldn’t be absolutely certain.
Things were and still are more surfable at the Dee Why end of the beach. However the wind is clearly going to be a factor. When I rocked up here about half an hour ago it was comparatively smooth inside, but as I sit in Sea Change tapping out these words, the sind seems to be coming more around and it’s lumping the faces up. It’s also letting more swell in, because there are now consistently 2-3 metre faces at the point.
The wind forecast is not too bad considering and as the tide drops we should have a few more surf options around the place. This is a pretty raw sort of swell because Huey’s making it relatively nearby, so I’m not hopeful of it cleaning up into the all time category, or even the semi-all time range, but I’m not complaining. The models are sticking with their call of the last few days for a fairly rapid falling off from the peak height, but remaining well into the surfable range through Thursday morning.
I’m planning to get a few more pictures today so stay tuned for a fresh gallery (Huey willing).
Since you’ve read this far, I’m hoping you won’t mind my respectfully placing before you the opportunity to show RealSurf a little direct appreciation… it’s been a few years since we last ran a fundraiser… thanks in advance for your generosity, I shall continue to do my best on your behalf!

Posted on December 1st, 2009 in Surf Reports.Overnight, the swell has come up, as expected. Still a bit fat, when I looked – but with the tide now dropping (from 7am onwards) that ought to get sorted out. Camera batteries went dead at NN, but you ought to be looking at the spots that like it south anyway. Even Collaroy has a wave!

Posted on December 1st, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour. That’s one year of In Byron Bay Today, brought to you come hell or high water one day at a time. When we first started; we naively aimed at a million hits as a goal for our first year. We topped eight million hits about two weeks ago. We’ve had huge traffic and an endless stream of emails from well wishers that just wanted to let us know they dig what we do and appreciative the effort. So to all of you that have supported us with your visits and words of encouragement, thank you so much. We’ll be keeping up the hard work, In Byron Bay Today.
