Too much wind Huey

Waiting to rock off the pool at Collaroy this morning.

Hello Friends,

Plenty of swell, but it was just so raw that nowhere really stood out as offering terribly exceptional conditions. Between the strong wind and early high tide, you really had to be lucky. I just had another look and the ocean is pretty torn up looking. Wind’s fresh and from the south at most places, but despite having a SE tilt, the swell’s 10 sec period isn’t quite enough to pull into the protected corners with any significant size. It’s a different story on the exposed stretches of course, there are still some solidly overhead faces to be had – if you dig onshore conditions.

The swell has peaked and is now declining slowly. While the wind looks like continuing in much the same vein for the rest of the day, the Bureau’s latest call is for light and variable going around to a NE seabreeze tomorrow. So I’m hoping that conditions will tidy up a little and that high tide spots will have something amusing for the dawn patrol. If it’s chest to head high on the sets, I’ll be a happy camper.

Finally, a big thank you to each of the following good folk who’ve bought RealSurf a coffee – or better!
Kevin M., Rob H., Ben G., Adrian C., David S.
Like what we do? Why not buy us a coffee too!

A little something for the RealSurf project from you!

Dee Why Today – Late Post

Posted on December 2nd, 2009 in Dee Why, Surf Reports.
As you know, tt was a BIG start to the day and not a bad finish either! I managed to get out for both the early and the late at DY today so here are a few samples of what I’ll be posting to the site when Huey turns the dial down on the swell settings which will be over the next day or two. I’ll let you know either way and when.
Hope you got out and had a good bash.
Go well.
Cheers,
Doug

Surfing by Moonlight (Cowells)

Posted on December 2nd, 2009 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. After the Southern Hemi wave drought, I was sorely in need of a stoke restoration session. So I headed to Cowells with my big blue longboard for a sunset surf on a negative low tide.

I caught too many waves to count. Many good rides. Loooong rides. Mostly frontside lefts. Woo-hoo! The vibe at Cowells was friendly and lots of people were smiling at me. I thought, gee that's nice, but then realized I had a stoke smile stuck to my face!

The Surf Camera Case (a product I do not recommend) mounts to a wetsuit on the upper chest and has an opening to allow video/photo recording while surfing. I played around with that for the first time today:

There's another video here. These weren't my best rides, but it's a fun perspective. (Hmm, maybe it's time for some clean new wax?)

I stayed out until the near-full moon was shining bright along with a few early stars in the deep twilight sky. The shot below was taken with the Pentax in night-photo mode, for which it suggests a tripod. Since instead I was being knocked in the knees by waves, it's blurry in an artsy way.

Just a horrible day all day Wednesday. Still watching to see if there will be any clean up waves come Thursday.

Big Wednesday

Posted on December 2nd, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Very big and messy looking down at Dee Why, but not so messy that surfing is out of the question. In fact there were a fair number of punters (for the conditions) in the water. They seemed to be well over from the point though.

The latest MHL data is showing that the swell has come around more to the SE and it hasn’t dropped much since yesterday with heights at sea averaging around the 4 metre mark. More importantly, the period is up slightly to about 10 seconds.

From the look of the data down south, the swell in Sydney could lose a little size and power as the day goes along, but it ain’t gonna go flat. Wind is set to be SW to S this morning, swinging to onshores this afternoon.

I think I’ll head out shortly to see if I can get a few more pics for y’all…

It might look like Victory at Sea, but they're out catching em.

Its on the big side today

Posted on December 2nd, 2009 in Manly.

Morning – its very big here this morning with some sets well in to the 8ft range. Still fairly clean though – although far from perfect. A few crew are on it early and I am about to join them soon.  My money would be on that lovely right hander as the tide goes out…..yesterday we did a coastal run and ended up with a few goodies but it seems we went a day early! We were blown out by the wind by about 9am down the coast. Have a great day.

C C – Big South Swell

Posted on December 2nd, 2009 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Showers, windy and mild on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  The swell is wind affected with a lot of water movement at 4 – 6 feet + from the southeast.  There is a moderate gusty south southwest breeze forecast to strengthen.  High tide at 0840 and low tide around 1520.  Local barometer 1015 hpa, 14 degrees C. 98% humidity.   Have a good one. For Sale -  I have a Surtech (Tuflite) Velzy 12 foot Hawaiian Paddle board (not SUP) for sale.  Excellent condition. $950.00 (cost $1600.00 + new).  This board is a standard (stock) class racing paddle board and goes like the clappers, very fast.  Good cross trainer for paddling on flat days.  If you are interested I can send photos.  Contact Matt at  ms2007@bigpond.com

Well It’s officially Summer, In Byron Bay Today

And wasn’t it just a cracker of a day. Cooler today thanks to the southerly feathering the bay and for those who looked there were many spots producing a few nice little waves. Now listen up folks there’s a rumour on the wind of a building south swell making its way up here. But we need some easterly direction in it, or it’ll just drive on up the coast. It may be a little early in the season for a good east south easterly swell. But we’re in negotiations whith Huey in the hope that we may just get an early Christmas present up this way. Here’s a tip for all you sliders out there.  Good sand is to be had if you take the time to look. Make the effort guys and you’ll find small clean empty waves. Some spots had little to no crowd today, and plenty of shape around waiste high and a little more at times. The tip is this; it’s not where you’d expect it to be at this time of year. Sorry but I won’t saying more than that, it wouldn’t be fair. So get on out there and look, chances are you’ll find somewhere nice and quite to play, In Byron Bay Today.
