Thoughts at dusk
Posted on December 14th, 2009 in Big Picture, Curl Curl, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
As we approach dark, the drizzle has returned. It seems to be thickening up to almost light rain now. Not a terrific day for surfing it has to be said. Stayed onshore and dull all day.
Although the average period pushed up into the 8 second range during the morning, there was no real evidence of a significant improvement. At around 5 pm I had to run an errand, on the way back, I looped out to look at Curly and Dee Why.
They were pretty much the same, ie onshore and struggling to make waist high on the sets. I stood in the drizzle at Curly and grabbed a few shots of the sets. The one below is typical of the better waves – and it only went for 20 metres or so before petering out.
Looks as though we can’t be too hopeful about Tuesday. The wind is going to start out light bfore gradually building up to a summery 15-20 kts NE by late afternoon. If some of this weak windswell is still around by first light, I’d say we’ll be going well.
I shall be up bright and early because you’ll be able to hear me around 0730 on ABC 702 radio week days this week and most of next. Hope I have something to be cheerful about!

Greyness and gloom

Hello Friends,
My first morning to do weekday surf reports on 702 ABC and what do we have? Grey skies and SE winds with almost no swell. Oh dear.
To the extent there is anything, our windswell this morning is about a metre and a bit from the SE at a weak 7 seconds. Couldn’t see anyone in the water along the Dee Why stretch. My strong hunch is that the same applies all up and down our beaches in Sydney this morning.
It has to be said that the forecast models are saying that Huey won’t be looking kindly upon us this week. This morning’s SE’ly is set to swing around to the NE this evening and then to keep at it from that direction tomorrow.
Sadly I can’t see it bringing us much of anything to surf. I guess if you are really, really keen, you might get something in the knee high range at a spots exposed directly to the SE. Of course the wind’ll be on top of it…
Water’s warm though!
Go well with your Monday aventures.

Fanning Tops Now
Posted on December 14th, 2009 in Top stories.PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, December 12, 2009) – Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, has been crowned the 2009 ASP World Champion, following a stunning performance at the Banzai Pipeline today.
Heading into the final stop of the 2009 ASP World Tour season, Fanning held the ASP ratings’ lead over fellow Gold Coast surfer Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, and with Parkinson’s Round 3 exit in today’s Billabong Pipe Masters at the hands of wildcard Gavin Gillette (HAW), 23, Fanning secured his second ASP World Title.
“I’m just a bit overwhelmed right now and I don’t quite know what to say,” Fanning said. “It was hard out there. I was trying to get ready for my heat and then Gavin (Gillette) got that one score as I was paddling out and, I don’t know, I just sort of slowed down.”
For the first time since 2003, the ASP World Title came down to the final event of the season at the Billabong Pipe Masters.
“This title is way more fun,” Fanning said. “I was much more relaxed for this one – besides the last few days, I was really nervous.”
The 2009 ASP World Tour season will go down in history as one of the most dramatic, with Parkinson winning three of the first five events before Fanning rallied in the latter half of the season to overtake his good friend.
“I knew I was surfing well,” Fanning said. “It was just a matter of getting that result. I knew it was going to turn around sooner or later. I don’t know, it’s weird the way the world works.”
Fanning’s 2009 ASP World Tour results are as follows:
Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Equal 3rd
Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Equal 5th
Billabong Pro Teahupoo: Equal 9th
Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro: Equal 5th
Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay: Equal 17th
Hurley Pro Trestles: WINNER
Quiksilver Pro France: WINNER
Billabong Pro Mundaka: Equal 9th
Rip Curl Pro Search: WINNER
Billabong Pipeline Masters: Equal 9th
In the end, and reminiscent of Fanning’s 2007 ASP World Title (clinched in Brazil), the lightning-fast natural-footer was in the water with Parkinson (in between heats) as the scene unfolded. The two lifelong friends embraced, exchanged words and paddled in separate directions.
“We just sort of sat there and hugged and chatted about what’s happened over the last few days and how nervous we both were,” Fanning said. “It was hard to watch what happened to him this year. He had such a stranglehold on the tour and then he had that ankle injury, so as a friend it was hard to watch that. If I wasn’t in the race I would have been gunning for Joel for sure.”
For securing the 2009 ASP World Title, Fanning has also been awarded and extra $50,000 from the Vans Triple Threat bonus package.
While the 2009 ASP World Title has been decided, the 2009 ASP World Tour season is far from over with one more day of competition remaining at the Billabong Pipe Masters.
Following his clinching of the 2009 ASP World Title, Fanning fell to Dean Morrison (AUS), 28, in the opening heat of Round 4.

Get up early Monday
Posted on December 14th, 2009 in South Carolina. Before the wind changes directions or for that matter, blows the fog away and you should be seeing a calm swell in the 4 foot plus range. Not sure how long before the wind blows from the SE, but we could see offshore winds again by Tuesday.

Way, Way Out In The Briny, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 14th, 2009 in Byron.Went out cruising the Bay with Byron Bay Eco Charters for a change of pace this morning. Seany asked us to come out and see what he and his crew actually do when the whale season is not on. It was a pretty damn nice way to spend a Sunday morning I gotta say. We motored out to Julian Rocks, over to the Cape, and down to check the wrecks in the bay using a tiny little miniature remote controlled submarine camera, which was way cool. It’s really nice to take in the views and check the sea life from a different angle.. There were also some nice beachies on offer this evening in the bay, and the lightshow that Huey put on for us was just magnificent, went through so many colour changes it was almost ridiculous. So what can I say, after a few hours on the bay, and then a few more shooting it this evening, it’s just been one glorious summer Sunday, In Byron Bay Today.
