Corker of a morning, tiny though
Posted on December 19th, 2009 in At large, Big Picture, Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
The conditions could hardly be better. Sparkling day after yesterday’s grey and rain. But if you’re looking for a wave, you’ll be needing something pretty floaty. There’s only a tiny E- ESE windswell showing along the beaches of Sydney. The most exposed spots are just barely producing waist high sets. And there are long stretches of smooth water in every direction.
There were only two or three folks in the water between the pole and Dee Why, a little clutch up toward Marquesas and the usual contingent at Northy.
Wind is set to go around to the SE this afternoon. It’s due to be into the 20-25 kt range, so just maybe it’ll push some junky little things in for us by around lunch time tomorrow. I’d be hoping for waist high or a touch bigger at low tide at south-east facing spots.
Tides: H @1042 L @1725
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Saturday until midnight: Wind: NW/SW 10/15 knots increasing to S/SE 20/25 knots in the afternoon.Sea: 1 metre, rising to 2 to 2.5 metres later.Swell: SE 1 to 1.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: E/SE 13/18 knots, tending E/NE 13/18 knots later in the day. Sea: about 1.5 metres Swell: S/SE 1.5 to 2 metres.
Monday: Wind: N/NE 10/15 knots, freshening to 15/25 knots
Cracker day but Hueys on strike with everyone else
Posted on December 19th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Great day outside but the surf is one foot, tide is rising and it’s getting weaker for the super-desperate. Huey, the slack-ass, is still on strike and there’s nothing significant on the horizon. South eats change due in around lunch time so enjoy the morning.
20 Beaches Ocean Classic
Posted on December 19th, 2009 in Good causes. The Epic Kayaks 20 Beaches Ocean Classic – this Saturday, December 19th.
If your down at the beach this afternoon you will probably see a whole lot of ski paddlers go past.
Today sees the 20 Beaches Ocean Classic which is a ski race from Palm Beach to Manly featuring some of the world’s best ski paddlers. It is the final race of the six race Oceanseries and is a 25 kilometre downwind race featuring spec surf skis and ocean racing skis. The current series leader is Australian Tim Jacob who recently won the prestigious 2009 Dubai Shamaal. He will be hoping to take line honours up against Murray Stewart (two race winner) and Queenslander Dean Mercer.
This event will also see South African Oscar Chalupsky, arguably the world’s best distance surf ski paddler, competing alongside Olympians Sasa Vujanic, Tony Schumacher and Hawaiian paddlers Patrick Dolan and Lauren Bartlett. Few paddlers hold a record comparable to that of Chalupsky. Beginning his canoeing career during his school years, his list of accomplishments includes eleven-time World Surf Ski Champion, multiple winner of international surf skiing races all around the world and Olympic South African Team Captain, participating in kayaking in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Over 150 already registered – hoping to top 200 mark. All on spec surf skis and ocean racing skis.
This is organised and run by Surf Life saving Sydney Northern Beaches and the volunteers of all the surf clubs along the way. Monies raised go back into helping run surf life saving on our beaches.
The experts are predicting the swell and wind conditions will determine the winner with strong downwind conditions favour the more experienced paddlers, while flat water will give the Olympic paddlers l
Prize money of $10,000 is up for grabs on this race alone thanks to Epic Kayaks, Bing Lee and LG as well as many other prizes. For more information www.oceanseries.com.au
