Bring back the Australia Day Surfboard Paddle

Longtime RealSurf friend, Ben G. wrote to us a couple weeks ago to see if we might get the word out on his campaign to bring back the Australia Day Surfboard Paddle across the Harbour.

Sez Ben…

“It was run for about 5 years up until 2007 and then due to a lack of sponsorship they pulled the pin.

“I got in touch with the Australia Day Council to see whether it was going ahead on Australia Day 2010 and it is once again not planned. They suggested, when I told them of other people that I know that are mad keen to do it that I should set up a facebook page or the like to try and rally some support.”

So, Ben’s done the deed and created a facebook page here where you can go and show your support for this great event.

Too Pretty For Some, In Byron Bay Today.

Well folks if this is any indicator of the summer we’re heading into, we’re in for a stunner in Byron Bay. Today was just ridiculously pretty, so much so, I couldn’t stand shooting it anymore. I had to down tools and go for a few slides myself. It’s not that the waves were that good, although they sure weren’t bad. It’s just that it was too pretty; I couldn’t bear to watch it anymore and not be in it. Funny thing is several places were breaking, and none were particularly crowded everyone was scoring in Byron Bay today. All was well in the bay folks were smiling and having a ball it was joyous and peaceful scene. Then a couple of blokes came out and decided to hassle us all. They dropped in on the girls and kids; put the hassle on the old blokes on logs and were generally rude to all and sundry. Once they’d managed to upset as many as they could, they jumped in their car sped off from the car park, happy with their egocentric little tantrum, Yah what hero’s. Honestly boys if you’re reading this, the general consensus in the parking area was that it was pretty lame behaviour. So what’s it all about then? Who knows, maybe they couldn’t handle watching folks enjoy themselves or it was just too pretty for some, In Byron Bay Today.

Out where it’s hot, hot, hot.

SURF FORECAST ISSUED WEDNESDAY 23 DECEMBER 2009: SEVEN DAY OUTLOOK FOR SYDNEY:

Mostly wind waves but a little something to ride.

Thursday: ENE windswell small but rising in the 1-2 metre range.

Friday:  ditto.

Saturday: smaller say about 1 metre East.

Sunday: ditto.

Monday: in the 1-2 metre range East North East.

Tuesday: 1-2 metres East.

Wednesday: about the same.

For those interested…

Now I don’t want to alarm anyone, just to alert you to “be alert…but not alarmed”…

Just before last year’s three shark attacks in Sydney, I observed, as you do, a big jump in fishing activity in the outer harbour area – in the stretch of water between Manly and Bradley’s Head you’d on average notice maybe up to 5 boats out fishing each morning.

Just before the first (early morning) attack in the harbour, the number of boats fishing jumped to the twenties, where they stayed during the period of the other two attacks at Bondi (evening) and Avalon (morning). 

All during the past year usual daily numbers in TG’s Baitfish Boats on the Harbour Index have been low. It has been up to only around 5, even on best weather days.  It went to 10 and 17 for a couple of days in November, but then dropped back down to 3s and 4s…

Anyway, last week the index was showing 14s.  Start of this week: 20.  Today: 30.   

While recognising the possible need for a “seasonal adjustment” to the stats –  holidays have started and people need to go fishing to avoid Christmas shopping – I can recognise there’s some serious fishing going on.  Seeing a big school of surface fish with people hooking into them was a bit of a giveaway.

Second observation… just in the last couple of days a big swirling eddy of the East Coast current has brought some warmer water closer in to Sydney…

Not saying there’s anything following them for a feed… but it would stretch the imagination to think they’re not…

Keep your eyes open.  Avoid surfing where the fish are, or murky water, especially at the times of day when the sharks are as bleary eyed as you are.

C C Small and Fine

Fine and dry on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east southeast.  There is a light southwest breeze at the moment but a light northeast breeze is forecast later.  Low tide at 0700 and high tide around 1300.  Local barometer 1010hpa, 19 degrees C. 95% humidity.   Have a good one. For Sale -  I have a Surtech (Tuflite) Velzy 12 foot Hawaiian Paddle board (not SUP) for sale.  Excellent condition. $950.00 (cost $1600.00 + new).  This board is a standard (stock) class racing paddle board and goes like the clappers, very fast.  Good cross trainer for paddling on flat days. Christmas Plans, In Byron Bay Today.

 The big question on everyone’s breathe is will there be waves? Everyone has a theory and so do we, the bureau say it may be no good. But we say rubbish, Santa is going to rock on into Byron on Chrissy Eve and produce some joyous little slides for anyone who wants them. Believe it enough and it may just come true on the day. As for us we’ll be taking a few days break over Christmas this year. We may shoot a bit or we not appear again until Monday. It really depends on whether Bear eats too much or not, In Byron Bay Today.
