On the road in the homeland

Posted on December 21st, 2009 in New Zealand.

Well its been a  tough few days with the South Westerly blowing its tits off here on the West Coast. This morning was the first real decent waves that I have seen in 4 days and the sun came out as well. Joy. Nothing beats a nice session at that little known break on the West Coast though. Far from epic but still a hell of alot of fun. Maybe becuase there was only 3 of us in the water for the low tide dawny. Hoping the wind may becoming from the east tom so its fingers crossed here. Seems this once sleepy little fishing village is now on the path to something much bigger – think Byron Bay in training. Only that the waves are better, its colder and you would be hard pressed to find the normal quality and quantity of beautiful people! Other than that its fairly similar – just on a smaller scale. Lots of envion friendly spots to eat and shop. Infact the Volcom shop over here is doing recycled boardshorts – you drop in y old ones and they get sent to Samoa. Nice touch. Its organic everywhere as expected and super tasty as well. A top spot and well worth a short stay if you ever get the chance. I used to hang here 15 years ago and the only thing that seems to have changed is the house  prices – another reminder of its big brother of  Byron Bay!  You can see the view from my accommodation – at $25 a night its a bargain, you also see teh problems one faces on the golf course – sheep everywhere!! Its good to know that you can still catch yourself a decent feed at the local wharf. Nice!…..anyway I am back out there for the high tide session. Have yourselves a great xmas and I will try and post some more photos if I get a chance (nightmare as my wireless is not working anymore). Laters.

Grey, yeah, so what

Little south swell makes its presence felt at 0800.

Hello Friends,
Dull skies and light SE wind this morning. Not too fabulous looking it has to be said. Still, there were a fair number of bods in chasing the junky waist high sets at Dee Why. Swell is out of the south. It’s a couple metres out at sea and while the average period is around 8 seconds, there is some 12 sec component (which probably accounts for the surfable sets).

From the MHL data down the coast, it looks as though the swell energy will peak around lunchtime. It looks as though we’ll have to put up with the SE’r all day unfortunately.

The WAMs have been rather variable lately. This morning sees interpretations of the data all over the shop. There might be some small and weak remnants of our less than spectacular windswell tomorrow morning. The Bureau says the breeze will be light and out of the north to begin, so those northern stretches will possibly be the best bet for a splash.

The rest of the week is shaping up to be mainly small and marginal. There seems to be some hope for a little something at east swell spots around Christmas Day. Between now and then it’s going to be a challenge to find much of anything above waist high.

Hope those models are wrong…

Have yourself a top old day!

1-2 feet from the SE

Posted on December 20th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

Small 1-2 feet from the SE with a light SE wind and low crowd for good reason.  There’s a junior comp on down south and karate training up north on the beach and no one in the water up north ‘cos there’s no waves. Outlook remains poor.

Mixed Nuts, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.

been like bag of miked nuts in Byron Bay this week. Everyone picked off the Cashews and Pecans, by the end of the week there was nothing left but peanuts. We had an early taste of things to come with some gentle summer easterlies, a little rain, an easterly swell, some warm sunny days and heaps of dolphins. Then just when we we’re all getting used to it and settling into the summer pattern. We’re once again slammed by strong northerlies trying to push us back into spring. However this is pretty much in line with the December weather patterns up here. The question on everyone’s lips now  is ‘will the northerlies back off after Christmas?’ Historically yes, they do, like clockwork. The Christmas break comes and the weather changes. The dry hot northerlies back off and are replaced with moist, lighter easterly trade winds and south easterlies as the air is sucked back up north into the tropical lows as they form. Will this happen this year? Well only time will tell, we had a very warm current come through last Saturday afternoon full of bluebottles , which is a fairly strong sign of some tropical lows may be on the way. Although maybe not quite just yet, In Byron Bay Today.

Corker of a morning, tiny though

Posted on December 19th, 2009 in At large, Big Picture, Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

The conditions could hardly be better. Sparkling day after yesterday’s grey and rain. But if you’re looking for a wave, you’ll be needing something pretty floaty. There’s only a tiny E- ESE windswell showing along the beaches of Sydney. The most exposed spots are just barely producing waist high sets. And there are long stretches of smooth water in every direction.

There were only two or three folks in the water between the pole and Dee Why, a little clutch up toward Marquesas and the usual contingent at Northy.

Wind is set to go around to the SE this afternoon. It’s due to be into the 20-25 kt range, so just maybe it’ll push some junky little things in for us by around lunch time tomorrow. I’d be hoping for waist high or a touch bigger at low tide at south-east facing spots.
