Cracker day but Hueys on strike with everyone else
Posted on December 19th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Great day outside but the surf is one foot, tide is rising and it’s getting weaker for the super-desperate. Huey, the slack-ass, is still on strike and there’s nothing significant on the horizon. South eats change due in around lunch time so enjoy the morning.
20 Beaches Ocean Classic
Posted on December 19th, 2009 in Good causes. The Epic Kayaks 20 Beaches Ocean Classic – this Saturday, December 19th.
If your down at the beach this afternoon you will probably see a whole lot of ski paddlers go past.
Today sees the 20 Beaches Ocean Classic which is a ski race from Palm Beach to Manly featuring some of the world’s best ski paddlers. It is the final race of the six race Oceanseries and is a 25 kilometre downwind race featuring spec surf skis and ocean racing skis. The current series leader is Australian Tim Jacob who recently won the prestigious 2009 Dubai Shamaal. He will be hoping to take line honours up against Murray Stewart (two race winner) and Queenslander Dean Mercer.
This event will also see South African Oscar Chalupsky, arguably the world’s best distance surf ski paddler, competing alongside Olympians Sasa Vujanic, Tony Schumacher and Hawaiian paddlers Patrick Dolan and Lauren Bartlett. Few paddlers hold a record comparable to that of Chalupsky. Beginning his canoeing career during his school years, his list of accomplishments includes eleven-time World Surf Ski Champion, multiple winner of international surf skiing races all around the world and Olympic South African Team Captain, participating in kayaking in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Over 150 already registered – hoping to top 200 mark. All on spec surf skis and ocean racing skis.
This is organised and run by Surf Life saving Sydney Northern Beaches and the volunteers of all the surf clubs along the way. Monies raised go back into helping run surf life saving on our beaches.
The experts are predicting the swell and wind conditions will determine the winner with strong downwind conditions favour the more experienced paddlers, while flat water will give the Olympic paddlers l
Prize money of $10,000 is up for grabs on this race alone thanks to Epic Kayaks, Bing Lee and LG as well as many other prizes. For more information www.oceanseries.com.au
Rain but little waves too
Posted on December 18th, 2009 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Out of the usual routine this morning, so running a couple hours late with my observations. Never mind, I can report that there are some small, junky and fairly weak waves around the place.
For instance, at around 0730 folks were catching waist high plus sections at the Bower. Tide’s coming in though, so not sure that it would be as interesting now. However, given that the swell hasn’t dropped off, you could still be in with a chance in the peaks all up and down Manly. Quality wasn’t memorable, but if you had a fishy or similar, there were fun moments to be had.
There were far fewer people at Curly and Dee Why by comparison. We’ve got a mix of NE and SE windswell, so both those places ought to be showing more than they were around 0800. If you reckon on knee to waist high with the odd bigger one, you should have a good match between expectation and reality.
From the look of the models, we’re not in for much over the next week. Today’s somewhat ordinary offerings could be about as a good as it gets for the next day or so.

Chunky Bits, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 18th, 2009 in Byron. So we finally saw a few chunky little waves of consequence, in Byron Bay today, not only fun but real pretty too. There’s just something fabulous about newly generated summer north swells. In Byron Bay Today.
Sunny with little waves
Posted on December 17th, 2009 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
NE’r blew all night and was going along at 15-20 kts as of 0700. With a very hot day ahead inland, the call is for the wind to get into the 20-30 kt range this afternoon.
All this air movement has pushed up a bit of windswell at the usual NE spots. I saw a chest high set at Northy, and something at least as big down toward Marquesas. Doesn’t look too consistent, nor terribly powerful (the period’s only 7 seconds), but there are waves to be had, particularly for those prepared to tune their choice of equipment to the conditions.
There were knee to waist high sets in the middle of the Dee Why to Longy stretch, but that probably wouldn’t be one of the first places you’d look for a wave.
With the wind set to go hard all day, I’d say there should be options around for the duration. A south change is due tomorrow, so this could be the best of it.

Saturday: Wind: tending SE 10/20 knots.
Not good for the next 48 hours
Posted on December 17th, 2009 in South Carolina.I am seeing nothing but building wind from the North and East Thursday and Friday. However, the weekend early buoy data is showing a building swell over 6 feet, but no other information. So lets keep our fingers crossed.
