The gloomy old gloom back again
Posted on January 27th, 2010 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
10-15 kts of southerly, slate grey skies and choppy seas with no visible swell. What can ya say? Not happening this morning in Sydney. When will it change? Hmmm…
…well, not today, that’s for sure. The wind will stay onshore and the weak 6 sec period southerly windswell is highly unlikely to bump up today.
From the latest run of the swell models, it would seem that Sydney will be just about flat for at least the next three days. But then the data starts to look a bit more hopeful.
If things unfold the way the forecast supercomputer is currently calculating, we could see the development of a broad easterly swell front hitting the coast from around Sunday onward. Indeed, at the outer extremity of the predicitions a very long fetch is shown developing from well to the NE of NZ and into the Tasman Sea. If this happens, we should see some pretty solid east swell for early next week.
Good to see something hopeful like that on the cards…
Have yourself a top old day and keep on smilin’!

Sharks, A Dime A Dozen, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 27th, 2010 in Byron, Local Colour, News Stories. While up the lookout to shoot the Australia Day paddle race today, we spotted a shark swing up underneath the swimmers as it hugged the edge of the bank and casually cruised to the point in less than a metre of water. Twas a reasonable size too, maybe 2.5 metres or so. Then along came another, and another and so on. It was the strangest Shark activity I’ve ever seen. Not a school and not all the same species either, just really weird. There were at least three different breeds that I spotted. But really who can be sure? We counted more than fifteen of them although there may have been more, and they all did exactly the same thing. They came up from Main beach past the reef, over to The Pass, straight under the swimmers and hugged the point close to shore then headed over to Wategos. This went on for about an hour, not together, just one after the other. In My entire life of surfing I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. To me the interesting thing about shark sightings is always the comments from people afterwards. I always get to hear all sorts of stuff about how people say they’re not scared of sharks. Or that sharks aren’t interested in people. Well ok if you want to believe that, fine. I suspect that these folks may not have had a close encounter with a really big one yet. I have an old friend from New Zealand, who lost her left kidney and various other bits to a shark bite many years ago. Try telling her that sharks don’t attack people. For me, I respect them for what they are, a very beautiful, graceful and very large predator. When sharks are cruising the bay, I say give them room to move and stay out of their way, In Byron Bay Today.
Happy Australia Day

Hello Friends,
Looks like a good day to duck along to your local Australia Day breakfast. Dee Why is probably a reasonable approximation of what you’ll find at most beaches across Sydney this morning. The metre or so of 7 second period ESE windswell will be struggling to deliver much of anything in the surfable range. You might spot the odd waist high bomb set, but the waits will be long and the energy levels low.
General outlook for the week ahead is not too terrific. The last of school hols is likely to be very small to nearly flat along most of the NSW coast. If you’re up north, the models suggest you could see some little something late in the week.
Have yourself a great Australia Day!

Still Blowing hard
Posted on January 26th, 2010 in South Carolina.Kinda of messy, but some ridable waves if you can stand the wind and cold water which is actually warmer now at 50 Degrees. So while Tuesday is iffy, Wednesday could have better off shore wind, but will be smaller in size.

Hueys Random Moments, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 26th, 2010 in Byron. We had unexpected swell in Byron Bay today. It’s like I always say, if I don’t get out and look I miss out. We’ve all been getting a bit desperate for some surf and all the weather predictions are pointing at yet another flat day. But Huey had other plans in Byron bay today. I’m a great believer in just taking time to go and look even if I too am expecting nought, because if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that none of us really understand Huey’s train of thought. So tired and overheated we trudged the track, only be delighted and surprised by the unexpected sight of sweet little empty peaks popping up all over the place. There was little to no sense in it all as some were from the southeast, some easterly and others from the north. Yet regardless of the random swell directions. There were hoots and hollers and plenty of smiles from those who came out to play, as they were the righteous few who scored Hueys random moments, In Byron Bay Today.
