A couple more pics (Manly & Curly)
Posted on January 25th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Manly.Hello Friends,
Swell is on the fade and there were lots of folks in the water at Manly and Curly bidding it adieu.
I think the pictures pretty much tell the story – they’re both set waves.

Grey, small, but not quite flat
Posted on January 25th, 2010 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Not much wind around under cloudy grey skies in Sydney. According to the MHL data, the swell is still out of the south. It’s averaging a couple metres out at sea and the average period is around the 9 second mark. Given those numbers, it’s a surprise to me that Dee Why looks as small as it does. There’s not enough happening to light up the point, and it looks like a longish wait for waist to waist plus sets in the beachy. From the other data on the MHL site, it also seems that Sydney is the biggest surf zone on the east coast.
Looking ahead, it would appear that we’re in for at least a week of small to nearly flat conditions. The swell-making systems just aren’t making it into position for the east coast. Pretty typical for this time of year of course, so it’s not really that surprising. Guess we’ll have to live off our memories of last week’s pulse
So, have you added your five fave Sydney surf spots to our latest poll yet? Intriguing to see Nth Curly and Nth Narrabeen battling out for first place…
Enjoy your day and go well with your plans

Desperado’s Paradise, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 25th, 2010 in Byron.
Nobody could question the beauty of it all in Byron Bay today. And yes we did have a pretty decent week of waves last week, but that was it. We were back to the flats yet again today. Now I’ve seen flat summers in the bay before, but even when we’ve had summers with very little swell, the banks have been ok and the wind has been friendlier. This summer however the wind is almost constantly blowing from the north like its still spring which is pretty unusual for late summer. The tropical lows keep forming and then disappearing before they generate any real swell, and folks have taken to surfing six inch ripples with a passion, which is just a little strange. After nearly six months of lack lustre waves the old town is in a semi state of retire. Byron Bay is a surfing town and it tends to pulse when the swell jacks, it’s the rhythm of the ocean which brings life to the place. By this time of year we’ve usually seen at least two decent swells of note. Last year in particular it broke almost nonstop for months. But so far in twenty ten it’s the ongoing story of making the best of what there is, which is becoming difficult as folk’s are getting a little desperate for waves. Yet we are a resilient mob and we live in hope. Autumn is just around the corner now. So maybe Huey will take pity on us and produce some slideable lines before we all go bonkers and start swinging from the vines, In Byron Bay Today.
Drizzle but not utterly flat
Posted on January 24th, 2010 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
The south change that came through yesterday not only broke the heatwave (it dropped 15 degrees in an hour at our place), but it also bumped up something more than the usual windswell. From the look of the MHL buoy, the energy levels peaked at midnight and are now dropping back pretty smartly.
There’s a fair amount of drizzle this morning, so my usual reccy shot of Dee Why doesn’t capture a set wave. I could barely make out the point, let alone any people, through the viewfinder, but once I got the pic into photoshop, it revealed that there were a few bods in the water waiting over from the point where the chest high plus sets generally break.
The latest MHL trace for Sydney shows a couple metres of south swell at about 10 seconds apart. Wind at 1000 was lightly from the west.
Could be worth a look at that fave south swell spot given that it’s gloomy and drizzly (so the usual Sunday numbers will be down) and that this little pulse looks like going away within the next 24 hours or so…
