Best Week Of Swell For Some Time, In Byron Bay Today’s Week In Review.
Posted on January 24th, 2010 in Byron.Well folks we actually had swell of some sort everyday of the week in Byron Bay. Granted we didn’t get the serious southerly ground swell that graced our brothers and sisters further south. But we did start the week with a rideable north east wind swell. This began to fade on Monday but was quickly replaced with a small easterly swell and then the tail end of southerly ground swell. After one of the laziest summers I’ve seen for some time in the swell department, I’d have to say it was a joy to see workable waves on call nearly every day. Yeah it wasn’t huge, but it did have moments and for those that got onto it before the word got out, well for them there was much rejoicing. Speaking of which I was asked this week yet again, why I don’t say where we shoot each day, and why I don’t give forecasts on where it should be good tomorrow? This is not the first time I’ve been asked this. The answer is simple. It all comes down to a strange little belief I have which goes something like this. If I haven’t bothered to go out and look for it, then I haven’t earned it. I believe that this rings especially true for surfing, so I’m quite happy to document what we got, but I’m sticking with not calling where or when it did or will happen, In Byron Bay Today.
You may have noticed… it’s a stinker
Posted on January 23rd, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Hard not to notice the key feature of today’s weather in Sydney. Already past the 30 mark before 0700 at RealSurf HQ high atop Collaroy Plateau. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to take a board when you head off to the beach to cool off.
To the extent you could describe it as swell, the numbers are as follows: ENE about a metre with a period of just 6 seconds.
The only hope of a wave I can see is if the expected change arrives before dark. Should that happen, there might be some junky, onshore energy at south spots. And then, if we’re really fortunate, a tiny bit will be left for tomorrow morning. But the period is going to be so short that I don’t hold out huge hopes for anything much at all. Plus there’ll be SE wind with it (in the afternoon the breeze will go around to the NE).
Outlook for the week ahead is not great according to the models. I hope they’re wrong, because if they aren’t we’re looking at near flatness for the next seven days.
Stay cool!

Midnight Oil + Violent Femmes = Surf band called Break
Posted on January 23rd, 2010 in News Stories, Surf culture.Thought this one sounded kinda interesting… Oils and Violent Femmes’ Brian Ritchie are getting together to play original surfin’ music (ie, mostly instrumental).
-Don
It’s a union that will delight music fans, surf rats, and festival goers alike. Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey have joined with bass player Brian Ritchie of US group Violent Femmes to form a new surf rock band called The Break. The new band releases its debut album ‘Church Of The Open Sky’ on Friday April 16th on the Bombora label through MGM.
The Break will kick things off with a short stint of gigs in Sydney and surrounds with further dates elsewhere to follow in the coming months. Thursday February 18th – The Harp, Wollongong – Friday February 19th – Fisho’s, Manly – Sunday February 21st – The Annandale, Sydney.
The Break’s album is a unique blend of pulsating psycho surf rock tunes featuring 15 mostly instrumental tracks. The bulk of the album tracks are named after legendary surf breaks. “Cylinders”, the first single from the album, was in fact one of the first tracks created, and will be available from iTunes Australia from Tuesday February 9th. World renowned producer Nick Launay, who of course has worked on many Midnight Oil releases and numerous other renowned acts including Silverchair, Nick Cave and PiL, took ‘Cylinders’ to the mixing desk in a Los Angeles studio to create a mix highlighting the driving guitars and a pounding back beat synonymous with both the surf rock genre and the classic Oils sound.

Whatta Week It Woz: 19-20 Jan

I really can’t spin “the swell drought was busted” any differently to that of all the chatter that lit up the air waves this past week. It was needless to say a bit of a froth-fest as Huey delivered an amazing swell event to the East Coast after too long a wait. There was only one thing wrong with the whole situation though - work committments. Note to self: no more 9am meetings!
Anyway, I did manage to squeeze a few off Tuesday/Wednesday after/before work so it wasn’t a total loss. The pics have been posted and you can find them here: http://www.wozthatyou.com/group7759.html
Hope you’re all travelin’ well. And keep cool - it’s already a hot one today.
Cheers,
Doug

Into a minor key
Posted on January 22nd, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Did you get your share of waves yesterday? Today might be a bit more of a challenge. The Sydney wave supply has pretty much dried up I’m afraid. Average height of the swell at sea has dropped from 2 metres at noon yesterday to about a metre this morning. The period’s also tracked down, fading from an average period of 10 sec to around 8 sec this morning.
Looks to me as though east coast surfers are going to have to live in their memories for at least a week…
Never mind, enjoy your day, Huey will return.
