Yeah Baby, We Had Waves In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 22nd, 2010 in Byron. What did I tell ya, huh, huh? Now if only we could just do that every night and be guaranteed waves the next day. But alas that’s not how it works in Byron Bay today. In fact I personally have little faith in swell predictions or weather predictions. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt for sure from forty years of surfing it’s that Huey is utterly unpredictable. The ocean can throw you curve balls that you never saw coming. That’s just the way it is, love it, surf it, play in it. But always have a healthy respect for it, In Byron Bay Today.
Not finished yet in Sydney
Posted on January 21st, 2010 in Big Picture, Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Did you get in for peak day yesterday? From the look of buoy data, the Sydney region copped the bulk of the swell energy. This morning we still have some surf about thanks to around 2.5 metres of SSE swell with an average period of 10 seconds. Dee Why looked.s kinda lumpy and bumpy early and it’s definitely more setty than yesterday.
Outlook is for the swell to continue weakening as the day goes along. If the current trend line keeps moving in the same direction it has since the peak around noon yesterday, I’d say the average swell height will below the two metre mark by close of play. Meanwhile, it should be building up along the north coast.
The latest run of models is showing us drifting back into small and weak windswell conditions across the coming week or so. So I’d get out there and score a few today if you can.
Go well and catch a few fun ones!

The Canadian Press: T.too much sitting could be deadly – even for people who exercise
Posted on January 21st, 2010 in Health & Fitness, News Stories.I thought this was interesting. Might have to build myself a standup desk…
LONDON — Here's a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly.
Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for prolonged periods – even if you also exercise regularly – could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place – at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV – just the overall number of hours it occurs.
Research is preliminary, but several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.
In an editorial published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggested that authorities rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting.
While health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven't suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.
“After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down.
Even for people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day – but still spend a lot of time sitting – might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single bout.

Mavericks contest founder sues ex-partners
Posted on January 21st, 2010 in News Stories, Surf News.Jeff Clark first paddled into the mammoth waves at Mavericks as a boy of 17, then surfed alone there for 15 years. This was long before the spot north of Half Moon Bay graced magazine covers, hosted one of the sport's blockbuster events and made Clark famous.
Now Clark is alone again.
The 52-year-old owner of a Half Moon Bay surf shop has waded into the courts in an effort to resolve the dispute that prompted his ouster last year from the surf contest he created – a quarrel as nasty as a plunge from the lip of a 40-footer.
In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in San Francisco Superior Court, Clark seeks damages from contest operator Mavericks Surf Ventures and three of its top officials. He claims they froze him out of the event and owe him tens of thousands of dollars in salary and royalties.

Making The Best Of It, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 21st, 2010 in Byron. You know we’re a strange yet resilient mob in Byron Bay. It’s been a long hot summer with really very little significant swell, yet I haven’t heard much complaining. Sure I’ve heard a lot of talk about the beginners at The Pass and how most folks are just utterly fed up with them making it unsurfable. But apart from that, what I hear on the streets and the in the car parks is. ‘Hey you know what, it’s small and lumpy, but the water’s clear and the sun’s out, so let’s just make the most of it anyway.’ That’s the kind of attitude which keeps me happy to live in the bay. Now having said all that, we may just see the leftovers of that big swell from down south in the next twenty fours or so, which would be a bonus. Plus we all need to keep an eye on what’s going on up near the Solomon Islands in the Coral Sea. There’s a tropical low up there which looks like it will probably make landfall. But if it doesn’t we may be seeing some serious swell later next week, yet that remains to be seen. In the mean time, I’m just grateful to live in a community where most folks make an effort to just make the best of it, In Byron Bay Today.
