Of surf hunts and such

Posted on January 20th, 2010 in At large.

Hello Friends,

Midway through the day and wanted to share a few snaps from surf hunting this morning. Lots of size thanks to the 4 metre south swell, but as usual with Sydney, the actual surf options were fairly limited. Went up to Avalon and back and the story was pretty much the same everywhere – big, but not really all that interesting because of so many close outs. Any place remotely surfable was mobbed as well. Ended up getting into some very messy and weird ones at shitrock with Dee Why’s Rob and a kiwi pal of our site from way back. Bit silly, but at least I sorta got one okay one and can therefore say I surfed today!

Hope to have more for you later…

It’s big

Posted on January 20th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Heaps of swell pushing in this morning – and lots of people to greet it too. Dee Why is seeing a steady supply of bomb sets thanks to the 3m+ 11 second SSE swell. Wave faces on the bigger catchable ones are into the 10 foot range. Surface conditions are a bit messy but the main drama is those bomb sets. The large crowd is doing a fair amount of duck diving to hold position as they wait for something that’s not shutting down. The beachy is mostly shutdowns, but unless I’m hallucinating, there seem to be a few peaks trying to take shape as the swell starts cutting some gutters.

Swell looks set to peak about midday and then to fade back to smaller, but not flat, conditions tomorrow morning. After that it looks like more typical summery smallness.

Go well with your day!

Tide high at noon.

More waves

Hi late nighters,

A little sorta treat for ya… some pics from the Queen of Brisbane Waters. Did everybody in Sydney know it was on or what?? Mate Kev and I did the count and at the top of the break there were 65 people chasing the first section – and at least that number again down the line. Silly fellow that I am I wasted too much time trying to get one at the top before discovering it was way less busy half way in to shore. Oh well, live and learn.

Da pix…

The Goat’s Surf Forecast

Posted on January 20th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Surf Forecast issued Wednesday 20 January 2010: Seven day outlook for Sidoney:

Well wasn’t today an interesting surprise for everyone?? It surprised me because I told a couple of people – prefacing with the comment “I’m on holidays so haven’t even looked at a computer to do a forecast…but I think it’s going down” (on Tuesday)!..

On a scale of whatever, Avalon today was Huge, and not really ridable unless you had the right equipment and were really keen. I saw that young Andrew was a keen one, but he’s been to Hawaii … :)

So have I… and I got wet today too. Went down to the middle of the beach…. walked out about 2 feet from shore, dived in, and had to swim back through the torrent that was trying to drag me out the back! No way! I’ve got more sense… My towel which I’d placed above the wetline got drenched and nearly dragged in – with my keys in it – in the backwash… a near disaster. The MHL buoy says it was 4-8 metres SSE offshore and at Sth Av the sets were pretty much in the range inshore too.

Anyhoo… So what’s it gonna do??? … Will it stay big??… Will it get bigger??? …Will it go down??? These are the questions confronting a million school kids and others on holidays…

Well TG says: After today, it’ll be going down (from the South) fairly quick, and then come back up a bit from the NE, then change direction again… so be versatile (new word for new decade)…

Thursday: 1-2 metres South East.
Friday: about 1 metre South East.
Saturday: in the 1-2 metre range East North East.
Sunday: in the 1-2 metre range South East.
Monday:about 1 metre East.
Tuesday: about 1 metre East/North East.
Wednesday: same.

Have a great Aussie Day!

Big and punchy but thoroughly over-populated at Dee Why this morning. Best wave is up the middle where the SuperBank used to be. But the crowd. Obscene.

What A Difference A Day Makes, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on January 20th, 2010 in Byron.

There were waves, a bit less crowds and most were thoroughly enjoying the brief respite from the heat. But don’t get too used to it folks if the weather reports are on the money we’re looking at several more days of pretty seriously hot weather in the bay. Speaking of heat there was a small meeting held today of a fledgling working group aimed at addressing some of the issues we’ve seen in the water in Byron Bay this summer. I was there and although I can’t speak on behalf of the people present, as an individual I can say this. There’s hope guys. The idea of invites only scenarios where regulations are made on the behalf of other folks who aren’t given their voice is dying the natural death that such silliness should. Thank Huey for that. There will be a gathering, or happening or whatever other labels you may choose to give it on Sunday the 31st of January at Clarkes Beach at 10.am. This isn’t a shouting match or a protest rally. It is however a chance for all local and interested surfers to turn up and share how it is for them. And maybe see if any of you guys are be interested in trying to heal what’s gone down this year. It’s a chance to be involved as a community to work together to be a part of the solution, In Byron Bay Today. Don’t lose your voice folks turn up and have your say.

Tuesday wrap and speculation

Posted on January 19th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Interesting day. Was cleanest and biggest this morning, then the wind came up mid-morning, but backed off from around 1100-1230. I surfed Longy bombies. Not fabulous (see pic below) but there were a couple head high ones and a few longish rides. Definitely worth the effort. Came in and went down the other end of the beach and paddled out at a micro point. However, once every 10 minutes or so a rideable one came in and I caught my share (not hard because at one point I was all by myself, looking in at a crowded beach under beautiful sunny skies).

About 1300 the wind got going and it’s made the whole southern end of the beach pretty messy. However, the MHL buoy is showing the swell as perking up again just as we head into the night time hours.

And, what’s extra groovy is that the Bureau has revised their call and now are lining up with the models and saying we should get an increasing south swell for tomorrow morning along with breezes out of the westerly quarters for the early. Then the wind’s set to swing around to the easterly quarters in the afternoon (ie seabreeze stuff).

Oh, and if that wasn’t good enough, it’ll be low tide coming in for the early crew. Quite the combo. Reckon I might have an early one tonight…

Swell at close of play is showing 3 metres @ 10 seconds from the south.

Tides: L @0553, H @noon
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Tuesday until midnight: Wind: SE/NE 10/15 knots tending N/NW in the evening.Sea: about 1 metre.Swell: S 1.5 to 2 metres.
Wednesday: Wind: NW/SW 10/15 knots, turning NE/SE 13/18 knots during the afternoon. Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: S 1.5 to 2 metres, increasing to 2 to 3 metres.
Thursday: Wind: NW/NE 5/15 knots, increasing to NE 15/25 knots.
Friday: Wind: N/NE 15/25 knots reaching 25/30 knots offshore later.
