It’s here
Posted on January 19th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends
Swell has arrived. A bit raw-boned and messy, but it’s the biggest we’ve seen in weeks. Heaps of folks on it at Dee Why from 0600.
Swell looks to be pretty much S-SE with wave faces in the 8-foot range on the biggest ones. I’d guess the period is around the 9-10 sec mark (the MHL site hasn’t updated since yesterday evening).
Weather is perfect and we’ve got an incoming tide with light SW winds to begin.
And good news on the forecast front. The models which were showing a very brief spike, now reckon the swell could last at around this intensity (maybe even getting jucier) through tomorrow midday. And tomorrow could see more west to the wind direction as well… woohoo!

Shark Park: new California monster wave?
Posted on January 19th, 2010 in Just for fun, News Stories, Top stories. It looks like surf film maker Greg Huglin has discovered a huge new open ocean wave off the coast of Santa Barbara county. My bet is it’s near the northern end of one of the Channel Islands. But Mr Huglin’s not saying. Quite a good yarn about the first trip out there on his site (link below). Here’s a taste…
The wave warped ominously, jacking up as high as a four-story building half a city block long before the wall of water curved over, exploding in a thundering cavernous barrel. Sounding like a jet engine on overdrive, the explosion of white water sent a concussion of rippling “wavelets” as big as six feet into the channel.
Mr. Curry and the other surfers smiled.

Posted on January 19th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.
Fine, dry and cool on the Central Coast this Tuesday morning. The swell is messy, disjointed and rising at 3 – 6 feet from the southeast. There is a light west southwest breeze at the moment forecast to go south southeast later. Low tide at 0505 and high tide around 1125. Local barometer 1004 hpa, 13 degrees C. 85% humidity. Have a good one! For Sale - I have a Surtech (Tuflite) Velzy 12 foot Hawaiian Paddle board (not SUP) for sale. Excellent condition. $900.00 (cost $1600.00 + new). This board is a standard (stock) class racing paddle board and goes like the clappers, very fast. Good cross trainer for paddling on flat days. Contact Matt at ms2007@bigpond.com
Dee Why: Lotsa swell, lotsa waves and lotsa surfers
Posted on January 19th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Biggest and best waves we’ve seen in Sydney in at least six weeks (perhaps even more). A solid south swell 1.5-3m at 8 seconds but the interval is already staring to drop. The word got out early–there were already nearly 20 on the Point by 0600 and twice that many at the beachies. Go now, it’ll only get smaller later. Wind is currently light W to WSW so looking more like winter conditions than January.
If You Can’t Stand The Heat, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 19th, 2010 in Byron. Not from the political pressures of what’s going on of late. I mean from the summer heat pure and simple, because that’s what we’ve got in Byron Bay today. It was hot today folks, it’s still hot and the southerly we were all pinning our hopes on for swell and a few cooler days. Is now looking like its being bullied into submission by a new high pressure system as it ekes its way towards the bay. That frontal system, which would have given us three to four days relief has stalled, is losing intensity and it looks like we may be lucky if we get a day or more respite from this heat. If the high pressure system has its way, and so far it looks like it will, we’re in for a very hot dry later half to this week in Byron Bay. If this comes to pass, it’s starting to look like bushfire and heatstroke weather is on the way. So be mindful of what you do with smoke butts, don’t leave glass lying around in the sun, wear hats and cover the back of your neck. Get wet and stay in the shade. We should get a break tomorrow, but after that all signs thus far are pointing to a possible prolonged period of pretty high temperatures. I hope I’m reading the maps wrong, but if not, be aware, carry water and stay cool, In Byron Bay Today.
Hello there Huey
Posted on January 18th, 2010 in Dee Why.…long time no see matey!
It’s starting boys and girls.
Not much showing on the buoys yet, but the lines are much more distinct and there are sets every 10 minutes or so that are getting toward the chest high mark at Dee Why point and maybe a touch bigger up the beach.
Indications this is going to be a brief pulse. The latest forecast from the Bureau expects the swell to be back to small by tomorrow afternoon. High tide’s around the middle of the day, so it looks the morning’s the go…
A couple pictures for you below…
Tuesday: Wind: SW 15/20 knots, reaching 20/30 knots offshore at first. Easing to 10/15 knots in the afternoon, N/NW 5/10 knots at night. Sea: 2 to 3 metres, abating to about 1 metre in the afternoon/evening. Swell: S about 2 metres.

Nice morning, but lookin’ very small
Posted on January 18th, 2010 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
As expected, not much going on this morning at Dee Why. But the good news is that we should see a south pulse and SW wind by tomorrow morning. The wind’s set to go pretty hard by this afternoon and to blow overnight, but we should have a couple metres of south swell filling in at the same time.
With any luck the energy won’t drop away too quickly and we’ll have waves all day tomorrow with maybe a scrap left over for Wednesday at the south swell magnets.
This could be the best swell we’ve had in a couple months – if it happens as the models anticipate.
By Wednesday evening it could be back to very small. But, the patterns seem to be shifting a bit. The Bureau is watching for a possible cyclone to develop in the Gulf and some of the models are showing it sitting off far north Queensland by the weekend. That’s all a long, long way from surfable cyclone swell in Sydney, but hey, it gives us something to watch.
Go well with your day

Dee Why: Noon update
Posted on January 18th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Weird. Stiff WSW winds, cool, clear air–feels more like mid-autumn than summer today. Nevertheless, there is a small, clean wave at Dee Why but already thoroughly crowded. Looks like the westerlies are going to stick around for a few days as well and if models are correct, we’ll see a boost in swell by Wednesday too.
Cheers,
Rob
Maybe some clean up surf in the morning?
Posted on January 18th, 2010 in South Carolina.looks like our 4-5 foot storm waves will drop throught monday, but in the morning there may be some opportunity to catch a few if you do not mind the water temp at 45 degrees.
