We Can’t Wish Away Climate Change: Al Gore

You mean scrunching our eyes shut, blocking our ears and shouting “it’s not happening, it’s not happening!” may not work? Great editorial from the New York Times site by Al Gore.

We Can’t Wish Away Climate Change

By AL GORE

Published: February 27, 2010

It would be an enormous relief if the recent attacks on the science of global warming actually indicated that we do not face an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.

Of course, we would still need to deal with the national security risks of our growing dependence on a global oil market dominated by dwindling reserves in the most unstable region of the world, and the economic risks of sending hundreds of billions of dollars a year overseas in return for that oil. And we would still trail China in the race to develop smart grids, fast trains, solar power, wind, geothermal and other renewable sources of energy — the most important sources of new jobs in the 21st century.

But what a burden would be lifted! We would no longer have to worry that our grandchildren would one day look back on us as a criminal generation that had selfishly and blithely ignored clear warnings that their fate was in our hands. We could instead celebrate the naysayers who had doggedly persisted in proving that every major National Academy of Sciences report on climate change had simply made a huge mistake.

Dee Why this morning

Posted on February 28th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

1030: Been keeping an eye on it, taking pictures at intervals just in case.

Nothing obvious has shown up while I’ve been watching. This however doesn’t mean that nothing will happen. Past experience with Chilean tsunamis in Oz has shown that waves and currents can happen for 6-12 hours after the first arrivals.

Obviously the big news this morning is the tsunami alert. As I write this the Bureau is advising that the first effects may be seen in Sydney at about 0845 – which is exactly on the day’s highest tide. So, you’d have to think there’s a chance of some local inundation. I wouldn’t be paddling out in the expectation of a wave though. From the reports I’ve seen so far, there hasn’t been anything remotely like the Indonesian tsunami in that regard.

I’ll be taking pictures of Dee Why every few minutes for the next hour or so to see if I can capture any obvious changes.

As far as the surf goes, it’s looking pretty minimal, so you’re not missing much this morning. Swell is out of the east at 8 sec apart and only a metre. And the general outlook is for not much improvement until about midweek when the models show us getting another brief but potentially interesting pulse from the east south east.

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Tsunami Warning. Strong Wind Warning.
Sunday until midnight: Wind: N/NE 10/15 knots at first. S change 10/15 knots inshore during the morning, strengthening to 20/30 knots and extending offshore during the evening.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres, rising to 2 to 3 metres in the evening. Swell: E/NE 1 to 1.5 metres. Chance late thunderstorms.
Monday: Wind: S/SE 20/30 knots, easing to 15/20 knots late. Sea: 2 to 3 metres, abating later. Swell: S increasing to 1.5 to 2.5 metres.
Tuesday: Wind: S/SE 15/25 knots, easing to SE 10/20 knots.

More soon

Going to take pictures every few mins and posting them here. Got a real high tide, so I’m wondering if the Tsunami surge will be visible…

Advice is to stay away from the water

tsunami warning – check news before heading for a surf this morning

Posted on February 28th, 2010 in Manly.

A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of the New South Wales and Queensland coast following an earthquake in Chile.

The weather bureau says the coastline could be affected just north of Sydney up to Brisbane, but it is unlikely there will be any land inundation.

The tsunami is expected to reach Australia around 8:45am AEDT.

People in affected areas are being advised not to go down to the shore to see the waves come in.

Wayne Coutts from Queensland’s Department of Emergency Services say the tsunami is likely to produce dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding in south-east Queensland from Point Danger to Double Island Point and Moreton Bay off Brisbane.

He says people should stay away from beaches until the threat has passed.

“Tomorrow morning we don’t want people walking along the beach, even going down to the beach to have a look,” he said.

“We don’t want people swimming on the beach – that is the main threat we are concerned about.

“There is no need for evacuations, there is no plan for that it’s certainly just for the marine environment.”

Tsunami warning East Coast Aust

The above map shows the tsunami from Chile potentially affecting an area from Broken Bay to Queensland.

An extremely powerful quake hit Chile on Saturday. The SMH reported:

A HUGE earthquake rocked Chile yesterday, killing at least 76 people, toppling buildings and triggering a tsunami warning around the Pacific, including NSW, Queensland and New Zealand.

The 8.8-magnitude quake plunged much of the Chilean capital, Santiago, into darkness as it snapped power lines and severed communications as walls and masonry collapsed.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS – WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Small Saturday

Posted on February 27th, 2010 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

Looks like we have a few little waves about this morning as the swell continues to slowly fade.

You’ll want to get yourself to a beach that likes SE (pretty much everywhere in Sydney) – and be packing your small wave gear.

Outlook is for the NE’r to come up soon, so go now or miss the clean ones. With luck it’ll hang in there at around these energy levels through to tomorrow morning. After that it looks like a couple days of minor to flat conditions before there’s another sputter of activity about midweek. Don’t expect to be seeing anything above chest high though.

Have yourself a great Saturday!

Looking at flat conditions Saturday and Sunday with offshore winds and maybe a little milder temps. But nothing is expected to improve in the next 72 hours.
