Afternoon update
Posted on February 5th, 2010 in At large, Dee Why, North Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
The schedule allowed your humble webmaster to slip down to the beach with camera and board today. Went out at a rather crowded north Curly following a tip from a mate.
It wasn’t the best for me and my fish, but if you had something longer, there were a few sections to be had. Weirdly, the lefts were a hoax when I was out. Lots of folks and highly variable quality tipped me into photographer mode.
I shot for half an hour or so and saw a couple nice waves. If you were out then, you might want to check out the gallery I’ll be posting soon.
Grabbed a coffee and caught up with a mate, then wandered up to Northy for a look. It was better than earlier, but pretty busy and sectioning quite a bit. Getting caught behind was common place. Got a few more snaps but wasn’t really tempted into the water because the swell while big on sets, is mostly fairly junky and not that crunchy.
My hope is that it will tidy up a little more and be fun lots of places tomorrow for the early. A south change is expected, so I may be letting hope get the better of me on this one. That said, it still looks as though there should be energy through to Sunday morning.
Have yourself a great evening and catchya later…

Size but…
Posted on February 5th, 2010 in Big Picture, Collaroy, Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Went out for a look around once I had the light. The numbers look up okay – east swell, 3 metres at an average of 9 seconds – and the wind’s not going too hard. But… the surface is still lumpy, the swell isn’t lining up too well at all. Despite the energy levels, I didn’t really see too many waves being caught.
It says something about the conditions that the usually busy Northy had only a few diehards in for the early. There was one tow-in team looking around for something to pull into near Gardens. But it was slim pickings and after finding the wave in my picture, they headed off to pastures new.
Collaroy had little lines but no takers. It looks very flabby indeed and the water (as everywhere else) is pretty ordinary looking.
Longy, well, the picture says it all. Not the swell direction for it.
Dee Why beach looked basically unsurfable, but there were a few in at the point. I had to wait quite awhile before someone managed to jag one. It went for a few seconds and faded out. Not exactly all time.
From the shape of the various interpretations of the WAMs, it looks as though we should still have about the same size and energy levels through today. The prospect is for a gradual decline, probably beginning overnight – when we’re also due to get a little south change. The change isn’t supposed to persist, so maybe we could get lucky tomorrow morning in Sydney.
The fetch that created this swell looks as though it will dissipate this weekend, so next week is not currently looking too flash. Indeed, it could be back to summertime flatness by Wednesday.
Have yourself a top old day and go well!

Bondi Bathers goes solar
Posted on February 5th, 2010 in Environment, Top stories.I’m a sucker for feel-good green stories like this one sent to us by the Waverley Council PR people. Be great if all the surf clubs were solar powered I reckon. Anyway, here’s the bumpf…
World’s Oldest Surf Lifesaving Club Goes Solar
On Saturday 6 February, the world’s oldest surf lifesaving club, Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club, will go solar courtesy of Bondi Solar – an initiative of Waverley Council and the Green Solar Group.
Solar panels have also been installed at the iconic and heritage listed Bondi Pavilion.
It is expected these solar panels combined will generate over 160,000 kWh of electricity, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 160 tonnes carbon dioxide and save close to $25,000 on energy bills over their lifetime.
Waverley Mayor Sally Betts said, ”This is a great example of solar panels demonstrating that new green technology can be incorporated into heritage buildings. We’re working to make Bondi Beach the most environmentally friendly place in the country.
“This is just one of the initiatives we are doing to help us reach our ambitious targets outlined in our Environmental Action Plan. Council’s greenhouse gas targets are in line with the International Panel for Climate Change’s recommendations – a 30% reduction by 2020 and a 70% reduction by 2050.”
“Partnering up with local company, Green Solar Group for this exciting initiative is exactly what’s needed to help us achieve that goal.”
Briana Green, Director of the Green Solar Group said, “We’re thrilled that Green Solar Group has been chosen to partner with Waverley Council to further its green efforts. With this solar installation, we hope to continue trumpeting the use of solar photovoltaic systems and demonstrate that energy efficiency and renewable energy can be incorporated in even the most historic of buildings.”
Waverley Mayor Sally Betts, Federal Member of Wentworth the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins (Waverley’s head lifeguard and star of popular TV show Bondi Rescue) will join the Bondi Nippers to celebrate Bondi Pavilion and Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club entering the era of carbon emissions and climate change with colourful surf life saving demonstrations and the releasing of solar powered grass hoppers.
Launch: Saturday 6 February 6 at 10.15am at the front of the Bondi Pavilion

All Good Things, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 5th, 2010 in Byron. All good things eventually come to an end, and so it is with the exceptional surf conditions we’ve had in the bay. After five straight days of swell and close to offshore winds most of the time. We finaly saw the winds finally switch back to the north this arvo, the swell was still on but it’s forecast to back off overnight. But hasn’t it been great to have waves, although the behaviour of some in the crowd has been pretty outrageous, to say the least. You know I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s not a competition out there folks. If you want to compete, fine join a club and go get you’re arse kicked by the truly talented. But don’t turn free surfing into a nightmare for those who are out there to enjoy being at one with Huey. You know people I wake up with my own ego, every day of my life. After forty five years of meeting my ego in the morning it still doesn’t impress me. So why would anyone think that anybody else is interested in theirs? Chill out, spread out, let a few waves go to the bloke or gal next you. It’s your choice; you can be a part of the problem or a part of the solution. I know which I’d rather be, In Byron Bay Today.
