Dee Why this morning

Hello Friends,

1030: Been keeping an eye on it, taking pictures at intervals just in case.

Nothing obvious has shown up while I’ve been watching. This however doesn’t mean that nothing will happen. Past experience with Chilean tsunamis in Oz has shown that waves and currents can happen for 6-12 hours after the first arrivals.

Obviously the big news this morning is the tsunami alert. As I write this the Bureau is advising that the first effects may be seen in Sydney at about 0845 – which is exactly on the day’s highest tide. So, you’d have to think there’s a chance of some local inundation. I wouldn’t be paddling out in the expectation of a wave though. From the reports I’ve seen so far, there hasn’t been anything remotely like the Indonesian tsunami in that regard.

I’ll be taking pictures of Dee Why every few minutes for the next hour or so to see if I can capture any obvious changes.

As far as the surf goes, it’s looking pretty minimal, so you’re not missing much this morning. Swell is out of the east at 8 sec apart and only a metre. And the general outlook is for not much improvement until about midweek when the models show us getting another brief but potentially interesting pulse from the east south east.

Going to take pictures every few mins and posting them here. Got a real high tide, so I’m wondering if the Tsunami surge will be visible…

Advice is to stay away from the water
