Back To Where We Started, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 25th, 2010 in Byron. We we first started this gig we very quickly decided that this thing needed to about the joy of the bay and surfing, not where exactly the surf was going to be. I mean I been surfing for forty years, been studying the weather sinsce I was a little bloke and am capable of calling it with fair accuracy. But the thing that kept coming up for me was this: just because I can doesn’t actually mean I should. Byron Bay is crowded enough the local crew don’t need me yelling out where to go. So we decided to just focus on the lighter side of surfing, I’ve done my time on the hardcore level, I’m not anti it, just a little over it on a personal plane. So when we built this gig we decided it had to just be about fun, we knew some would take the piss, but that’s their issues not mine. So off we went to get our first shoots. It took us a while to find our groove but from day one we realised that the main objective was going to be about fun. The local crew and the visitors alike understood the philosophy that In Byron Bay Today needed to be about warmth, heart and the art of the surfing life. That there’s no place for massive egos and attitude in the bay and we don’t need to push that stuff in the IBBT site. So we headed out into Byron and surrounds looking for the fun stuff and the positive people. Quickly we found that these things are still alive and well if you look for them in the bay. it was a relief to find that message of surfing hasn’t quite been lost yet. So here’s ours (Yoko & Ben)’s favourite shots from December 08 and January 09. They may not be the ones you loved, and there’ not even of the best surf, they’re just a few of many that made us smile back then and still make us grin even now. Hope you enjoy, In Byron Bay today.
Afternoon update
Posted on February 24th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends
Over the course of the day, the south swell rolling into Sydney built up from chest to shoulder high at exposed spots to head high plus. The MHL data shows that it’s stayed around the 3 metre mark out at sea since late last night, but from about midday on the average and peak periods went from 10 & 12 seconds, to 11 & 13 sec.
Went for a splash at the south end of Dee Why beach and you could really feel the difference between the 10-11 sec average ones and those coming in at 13s apart.
Not sure what was going on, but there were lots of folks in the water during the middle part of the day at Dee Why. Wave quality was – as the pictures I took at the point during the late morning show – not amazing. The swell has a nice long line, but our featureless summer banks don’t have the kind of gutters we need for strongly defined peaks. So, it was kinda sectiony in the beachy, and because there’s a heap of sand just north of the point, the bigger sets were sectioning quite a bit.
Swell is expected to back off overnight, but there should still be a little something at south-facing beaches tomorrow for the early risers.
Latest run of the models suggests that we’ll see the conditions get weaker and smaller across the end of the week and into the weekend. There’s some hope of an uptick though as next week kicks off.
Have yourself a top old evening!

Posted on February 24th, 2010 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Gonna pop up a few piccies later, but since I’m working off my netbook from the lovely surrounds of the sth Curly carpark, thought I’d give you the skinny first.
As anticipated last night, the swell has definitely pushed right up. It’s pretty raw and at first light this morning there wasn’t much in the way of quality when I checked Dee Why. Mate Barry and I were equipped to go, but in the end the grey skies, and crumbly sectiony junk just couldn’t deflect us from a coffee. There were one or two in the water, but it was a struggle to even get a takeoff. About every ten minutes there was a bigger set and by the time we left the coffee joint, they were arriving reasonably often. Sadly I can’t tell you that the peak had improved.
Watching Curly right now and there are half a dozen in waiting for something vaguely catchable. Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. Longest ride I’ve seen was maybe 4 seconds. Keeness required.
