psst! at this hour, nobody’s listening…
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 in Big Picture.Huey’s at work kids. Since dark he’s pushed our swell around to the se, ramped the size from a metre on average at lunch time, to close to 3 metres. And he’s pushed the engine telegraph from a sad sack six seconds at lunch time to 9+ seconds at 9pm.
Wind’s set to be SE in the morning, so there won’t be lots of options… but there should be a few corners with any luck!
Sleep well!
Real small, but not flat
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 in At large, Dee Why, Long Reef, North Narrabeen, Warriewood.Hello Friends,
With the forecast calling for south wind this morning, your correspondent decided to make an early start on the day. I checked the Warriewood to Mona stretch first. Not super fabulous, it has to be said. The little windswell is mostly in the knee high range but here and there, depending on the current state of the tide, you might find a little peak focusing. However, the southerly isn’t going to do a lot to help things, surface-wise. Judging from the buoy data coming in from down at Eden and Batemans Bay, there is reason to think that we’ll also get an uptick in the south swell over the course of the day.
About the best I saw early was a sort of complex of peaks from carparks North. Quite a few bods on it, but as we got closer to 0900, more and more folks had to peel off to attend to other obligations. I sampled a few myself and can report that the water was beautiful.
On the way back to the office I swung into Longy for a squizz at happenings. No south swell energy apparent, but the wind was chopping up the knee high froth for a couple mal riders up the north end. From there south to the single surfer waiting hopefully in front of the DYSLSC there was not another person in the water.
Ok, gonna post this and then have a look at the latest run of the models for ya…

Small and foggy in the morning
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 in South Carolina.I did see a couple of boards Monday evening catching a few 3 footers in the fog. That fog will be around Tuesday morning and glass like conditions most of the day. Unfortunately the bump will be shrinking fast.

On The Mend, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 in Byron. On The Mend, In Byron Bay Today. Well folks it’s really starting to look like we may be able to get back to live updates by as early as next week. We can’t yet replace it all yet, but we should be able to get enough to go live again. The donations keep rolling in and we keep getting closer to getting back out there and shooting. Got to be honest, I can’t wait, I’m going stir crazy couped up in this non aircon little sweatbox office waiting for glass for the car, and repeatedly writing about last week’s act of stupidity. I’d much prefer to be writing about what folks are doing out in the bay today, but just for now, still stuck in my own weird little world. Oh well, ‘C’est La Vie’ as they say. Whoever they may be, if I start thinking I know who ‘they’ are then we’ll all know I’ve been stuck in this room far too long J. On the flip side to all this, we always knew we had good traffic. But we didn’t realise quite how much our work meant to you guys. We’ve always tried to do our best, to give it some heart soul and some good old fashioned weirdness and irreverence at times. It’s been a radical trip to be so heavily supported. Of course most of you know by now that if you’ve donated you’re in with a chance to score a joyous wooden fish. Well we’ve got more good news; we had a very positive meeting with another local business today. There’s going to be a new dimension added to In Byron Bay Today very soon, but more on that later.
Don’t forget anyone who has donated $10 or more to our stolen camera gear fund will have their names handed over to go in the draw to score a Grown Surfboards Wooden Fish valued at $1800, the draw remains open until the fish is finished. This is all courtesy of Andrew Wells as a sign of his appreciation for you helping to save, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on February 22nd, 2010 in Click! Pics for folk, Top stories. It was Saturday 20 Feb at around 330pm when I rocked up to see if anyone was having fun in the small conditions at Curly. Sure enough, there were heaps of weekend warriors chasing the cute little waist to chest high peaks. Light was perfect for picture taking, so I did my best to capture regular folks having fun. If you were out, you might want to click through to the bigger version of the slide show. I got over 100 pics, so if you were out, and catching anything, there’s a good chance you’re among the snaps!

Very, very small
Posted on February 22nd, 2010 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why, North Narrabeen.
Hello Friends,
Well, it’s awful tiny this morning around the northern beaches. I was up for an early and ended up going for coffee instead. Need a few more waveless days before I’m ready to go out in anything I guess.
First spot on the checkout list was Dee Why at daybreak. Watched it with mate Barry for quite awhile before we decided the sub-waist high dribble just wasn’t going to tempt us. After a restorative coffee, I headed over the hill to see if there was something to surf at Curly.
Again, no dice. There were a couple bods up the north end, but the waits were exceedingly long and when they came, the sets were barely waist high – and then only for a second or two before they subsided into a bit of froth.
Took a flyer and headed north for a squizz at the Gardens-Narra stretch. There were a few folks in at Northy (always are) but as with elsewhere, the waits were very long and the payoffs very ordinary. You know when there are only half a dozen in there that it’s pretty dire. There were a couple similarly flabby, but slightly smaller peaks way down the beach too. If I still had my air mat, I mighta gone one of ‘em.
Surf outlook for today is basically more of the same. About the best I think we can hope for is maybe a small uptick for the late at those spots out of the expected NE’ly.
Tomorrow morning is pretty doubtful looking for the early. The current forecast is calling for a south change before lunch and with it an increase in the energy levels as the dominant swell direction swings to the south. With luck Weds will see decreasing S-SE’ly wind and continuing swell. Right now, midday Wednesday at south swell spots appears to be the pick of the week. The models currently project the south energy hanging around through Thursday before we’re back to quite small in Sydney – just in time for the weekend.
Go well with your day!
