Win An $1800 Handmade Wooden Fish, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on February 22nd, 2010 in Byron, Local Colour.

Well you just never know what tomorrow may bring, last week we had the vast majority of our gear ripped off. This week we’ve got a new board upf ro grabs. Yesterday we got an email from Andrew, of Grown Surfboards offering to donate a handmade hollow wooden fish that he’s setting up to make right now, as a means of helping us raise funds. He was thinking we could sell it or auction it to our readers. Now that’s super generous, but we didn’t feel right just selling it. So we had a chat with Andrew, and came up with a new plan. Grown Surfboards is going to give this beautiful board to one of you guys as a thank you gift for your donations that are helping to replace our stolen camera gear. Andrew’s going to build this board and send us photo updates of his progress along the way, which we’ll post on our site. He just wants In Byron Bay Today to stay live. So he’s told us to keep the donation button up until he finishes the fish. Anyone who has donated $10 or more will have their names handed over to Andrew, then he’ll draw one out, and that lucky reader will become the proud owner of a brand new Grown Surfboards Wooden Fish valued at $1800 courtesy of Andrew Wells as a sign of his appreciation to you for helping to save, In Byron Bay Today. Now how cool is that!

Small surf Sydney Sunday

Posted on February 21st, 2010 in At large, Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Everybody in! Hot day and at least it’s not totally flat. We’re set for the usual NE wind as the day gets going, but for the early risers conditions were smooth everywhere. Only two problems. First, the swell has faded away to a weak, short period, waist high NE windswell. And second, the catchable ones are not arriving too frequently. Lots and lots of waiting for the healthy Sunday crowds.

Like yesterday, the best hope for this afternoon will be the semi-protected North corners. I’d be taking whatever you like to use for weak and small conditions.

The latest run of WAMs does not offer much hope for waves this coming week in the Sydney region (there could be a little something up north though). About the brightest spot on the data is Weds-Thurs when we could pick up a little south swell activity at the usual spots. If it gets to shoulder high on the sets, we’ll be doing well.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Board, Bike & Boats (Cowells/Indicators)

Posted on February 21st, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. Wish I'd gotten one like the guy in the video. But it was crowded where it was decent, and too mushy/blown out where it wasn't crowded - plus for whatever reason I was kooking it up today. So I got only one good wave. On the up side, with my new board I'm feeling more comfortable on slightly OH waves, as long as they're on the gentle side.

A little Magic... but it was a better day for sailing.
Hers 'n' his toys... making the MINI Cooper turn even more heads.
Surfline: W swell picked up further this morning with overhead waves at many breaks and sets to double overhead at standout spots. W wind is on the rise and will hurt surface conditions. Buoy 46012: 9.2 ft @ 12.5 sec.

A Saturday with waves

Posted on February 20th, 2010 in At large, Dee Why, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Not fabulous quality, but there are definitely waves around the place.

The numbers look good: SE swell at a couple metres with an average period of close to 10 seconds and no wind to speak of. But the low tide reality this morning along the Collaroy-Narra and Longy-Dee Why stretches is not matching the stats. It’s still rather messy and junky, so don’t go expecting anything wonderful in the way of quality.

Wind was not a factor early, but by midday it’s set to be pushing along at 20 kts out of the NE. So, if like me you have obligations this morning, your surf options will obviously be limited to northern corners that like a high tide.

I’ll try to get a few more pics later on and maybe to duck back with a few thoughts about the outlook for the week ahead.

People are amazing, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on February 20th, 2010 in Byron.

The donations and offers started to flood in, by this afternoon we’re almost halfway towards being able to source some second hand gear and get back to work again. This progress simply would not have been possible without the extraordinarily generous actions of you people. We’ve had an interest free loan from a surfing family freezing in Germany, checking our site everyday and hanging out to get back here. A surfer who works an oil rig in the Libyan Desert made a big donation just out of gratitude as he feels this site helps to keep him sane. We had another very generous donation from a local company Lighthouse Investments , just because the bloke loves checking our site each day. That’s to name but a few. There have also been donations from USA, NZ, UK, Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and of course from the local crew, just too many to mention. We’re not out of the tunnel yet and we still have a lot of hard work to get back to where we were. However thanks to you fine people In Byron Bay Today, is looking like we will stay live. It’ll take considerably longer to break even now that’s for sure. But we’ve been touched on a level that we never expected. So much good has come from a stupid act of greed, thank you, with gratitude & respect to you all Ben & Yoko.

Late arvo messy but rideable

Posted on February 19th, 2010 in At large, Lagoon entrance, Longy, South Narrabeen.

Had to run an errand, so stopped for a look to see if the afternoon wind change had done any good. Comparatively glassy but very lumpy and 99 percent shutting down along the south Narra stretch. Still okay size though. Around at Longy there were lots more people in the water and though smaller, there were also more options for catching one. Quality is strictly average, but on a warm summer afternoon, it’s pretty tempting nonetheless…
