Mush world
Posted on February 19th, 2010 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Pretty bad case of morning sickness along the northern beaches as we get started. I daresay it’s the same for you folk along the eastern suburb shores too. As the pictures show, the surface conditions are very choppy and junky thanks to 15-20 kts of ESE wind.
Swell is around the 1.5 metre range, coming from the SE and about 8 seconds apart on average. So there are the makings of waist to chest high sets and as the wind swings to the NE this afternoon, there could be an improvement in the quality at the north ends.
Several riffs on the WAM data are projecting a swell increase toward this afternoon and in particular an increase in the average period. However, there’s nothing obvious showing on the actual buoy data from along the NSW coast, so I’m not overly confident that we’ll see any dramatic change to the basic swell settings today. Be fantastic if I’m proved wrong though.
Swell energy levels look like gradually fading over the weekend, but with luck we won’t drop into the completely, unsurfably flat range.
On other matters, I’d encourage all fans of our ever sunny Byron reporter team Ben and Yoko to check out their site. They lost a bunch of expensive camera gear to thieves and are putting out the word for some help to recover. You couldn’t meet a sunnier, more positive couple, so I hope all the positive energy they’ve put out will come back to them in the most practical way.

Extraordinary People, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 19th, 2010 in Byron, Local Colour.I honestly don’t quite know how to write tonight’s In Byron Bay Today update. So I’ll keep it simple and tell it how it is. For those who don’t know, yesterday a desperado smashed a window in our car and escaped with thousands of dollars worth of our camera gear. First we felt despair, disbelief and anger. But we soon came around to a sort of resigned acceptance last night and started thinking, ok now what, what’s next, how do we fix this and keep In Byron Bay today going, as run on shoestring budget? Screw the problem, how do we live in the solution? You see folks IBBT does get really great traffic, more than a million hits a month, but in the current economy traffic does not equal money. We don’t get paid for what we do. So like everyone else at the moment we do our best and just keep moving forward when we can. It’s like they say, faith can move mountains but it helps if you bring a bloody big shovel.
Anyway about midnight last night the emails began to arrive, and they’re still coming, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing all day. It’s all been from you extraordinary people, our readers/friends, from every corner of the globe, all over Australia and so many of the local crew. Some offering to hunt the vermin down for us, some even offering to do acts of joyous stupidity so we could ask people to sponsor it to raise funds J. Which I got to admit kind of appeals to my sense of humour. Many, Many, Many, just wanting us to know that their thoughts are with us, that they too have experienced this kind of mindless greed from thieves and if they could help they would. So many beautiful sentiments, from so many lovely people, Yoko keeps bursting into tears from gratitude, and I been getting a little misty myself. Yesterday Yoko’s heart got broken and mine was dented pretty badly too, today you guys healed us, we’re not giving up, where there’s a will there’s a wave.
Folks, many of you have offered to help finance our replacement gear with donations of varying sizes, and as uncomfortable as I am with the idea. I thoroughly believe that those who get humiliated in life are those who don’t get humble when it counts. So we gratefully and humbly accept all the offers to help us keep this site alive. It has been suggested by many of you that we make the details available for people to voluntarily chip in to the keep In Byron Bay Today a going concern. So click here for the details. Both Yoko and I don’t know what else to say you folks. Your generosity and desire to have us keep working this gig is like nothing either of us has ever experienced before. So thank you all, whether you’re helping with a few bucks or just sending your well wishes. It’s given us the dogged determination to not give up. We’ll be bringing you as yet unpublished photos from our spare archives, until we can get more gear and get the car secured. In the mean time once again, you guys are just extraordinary human beings, it makes us both very proud to keep bringing you, In Byron Bay Today. PS. This donation idea has been suggested by many of our readers, please do not feel in way obligated to donate. Those who wish to, fine and great, those who don’t or can’t, hey that’s cool too. Either way, you guys have touched us big time. Much Gratitude & respect to you all Ben & Yoko.
One morning out of Sydney
Posted on February 18th, 2010 in At large.
Hello Friends,
Last morning of the mini surfari down the coast. Once again it was into the breach of 9-iron reef. Swell faded as expected overnight, but early risers were rewarded with glassy conditions and the odd chest to shoulder high set. And there weren’t too many early risers on it either, so despite Huey’s somewhat leisurely attitude to set frequncy, it wasn’t hard to get one’s share of the morning’s offerings.
Stopped at a little breakfast place just back from the beach at Mollymook where we hoed into the obligatory b&e and mugs of joe.
Back on the road now and your correspondent is sitting up the back with his netbook, tapping out the words he hopes will amuse and enlighten.
My net connection’s dropping in and out, so it’s taken awhile to scan the WAMs etc. The latest run of the models suggests that the energy levels will tail off a little today, but then perk back up into the chest high plus range tomorrow as another pulse fills in. With luck the waves will last through Saturday morning. Winds look like being pretty much standard issue seabreezes, so the earlier the better rule applies.
From the shape of the forecast, we’re in for a run of small to not quite flat conditions along most of the NSW coast as we head into next week.
Enjoy and go well with your day!

A Rare Treat (HMB Jetty)
Posted on February 18th, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions.Nikki said she'd be there but I arrived a bit late and had to try to find her in the water. About a dozen surfers were clustered at the main peak near the Jetty, with a few that didn't look like her scattered farther down the beach. I got denied trying to get out at the main with my 8'3" - I almost made it to the lineup, but then a bigger outside closeout tumbled me ass-over-teakettle nearly back to the beach, exhausted and gasping from the holddown.
Still, the times I did get out were well worth the effort. I caught a couple of long, sweet lefts almost to the beach. So much better than being in the office!
Surfline: 5-6 ft. Light and variable north winds with smooth seas. Mid-period WNW swell is mixing with a small SW swell today. Well exposed spots are mainly around head high with some overhead sets. Buoy 46012: 8.2 ft @ 12.5 sec.
Getting flatter each passing day.
Posted on February 18th, 2010 in South Carolina.Nothing to ride on through Sunday. Too bad as it finally break above 60 degrees Saturday and Sunday. But the water temp is STILL 48.

Blown out mess today
Posted on February 18th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.3 feet of SE wind blown mess. Size has dropped signifcantly and the wind is up from the S/ SE. Even Manly looked a bit rough this morning although probably the best option for a wave. Tomorrow, the wind is out of the east but the swell and period is forecats to increase and Saturday looks good at this stage. Enjoy.
