hey look, waves!
Posted on March 31st, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Hadn’t looked at the beach in a few hours when a message came in from mate Barry to tell that things were changing. And so they have. Swell has gone more south and jumped from about a metre at less than 6 seconds on average to around 3 metres at about 7-8 seconds. Wind is out of the SW at 15-20kts and the combo is producing waist to shoulder high waves in the corner at Dee Why. As you can see from the pic, the quality is pretty ordinary, but they can be caught, they can be ridden – and are being.

It was a dark and stormy morning
Posted on March 31st, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
One of those mornings when I don’t mind the prospect of a coffee and desk work so much. 20-30 kts of SSE wind, lowering grey skies and a 2 metre SE swell with a power setting of only 6 seconds. As this morning’s picture shows, it was not an attractive scene where Dee Why was concerned. Given the look of the sea, I’d be very surprised if there was anywhere with much of a wave this morning. Despite all the wind, there’s just not much energy in the ocean.
From the shape of the forecast data, it would seem that we’re in for another week of mainly southerly conditions. The swell should push up a bit but on current reckoning, it won’t be a dramatic boost above the present conditions – at least not for the next few days. Some interpretations of the WAM data are still showing a biggish pulse about Monday. They were projecting it yesterday as well, so maybe we’ll get lucky.
Meanwhile, down at Bells, the forecast is not looking too flash for waves across the period of the contest. I reckon they might want to move it to Johanna…
Go well with your day, wherever you may be!

Posted on March 31st, 2010 in South Carolina. The Tuesday morning session was very nice so I hope you were able to grab a few waves before the winds shifted south. Now for Wednesday you will find West winds again in the morning, but it will be less than 2 feet so I suggest you go out and if nothing else get some paddling in.

Change Is A Coming, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on March 31st, 2010 in Byron.I suspect a change is a coming to the bay. I’m not about to make any serious predictions, but this crusty old salt is starting to feel the familiar ache of my internal barometer going off again. So I checked the wider regional maps a little more closely and sure enough there are signs of a low pressure system forming further down south. Hmm there’s nothing like an aging body to let you know when the weathers changing. Of course the cloud banks building up this afternoon, and the fact that the swell slowly but ever so surely began to creep up a little in size even as the tide went out is a dead giveaway. There’s something coming to Byron Bay. Don’t ask me when or how much we’ll get. But I reckon late Wednesday or early Thursday we’ll see a change in wind and a slow but steady build in the swell. Of course, I’m no weather expert so I could be wrong. We’ll just have to wait and see. To those heading into town or going away for Easter, drive safely folks. It’s better to arrive late than not at all, In Byron Bay Today.
Micro conditions this morning
Posted on March 30th, 2010 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
It looks as though the micro conditions are going to last another three or four days. The MHL buoy reports less than a metre of short period ENE windswell. So I wouldn’t be too hopeful of finding a wave this morning.
The forecast models have been swinging about over the last few days. This morning’s run doesn’t look quite as flash as yestereday’s, but the broad trend of a building S-SE windswell from around Thursday. With luck it’ll get into the rideable range by Thursday at south swell spots. As things presently look, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see anything too dramatic. However, one of the interpretations of the data is calling for energy levels to move from rideable to interesting late Sunday. That’s pretty far out there, so I wouldn’t be blocking out a spot in the schedule for Monday just yet…
Pics up in a bit when there’s enough light…

Most number of people on a wave record attempt

Manly Surf School tempt 120 surfers to Collaroy to try to break record
Manly Surf School today attempted to break the Guinness Book of World Records most number of people on a wave. Helicopters and film crews were there for the event. 120 surfers tried to write their name into the history books.
Matt Grainger of Manly Surf School said “The conditions weren’t quite right today but although we didn’t beat the world record we will try again. However what we have shown is how safe it is to surf and how much fun you can have surfing rain hail or shine with your mates.”
The world record was beaten four times in 2006.
The group from the Manly surf school brought a surfing world record back to our shores after 46 people successfully rode the same wave. The school had set a record of 38 in 2000, but it was lifted to 40 in San Diego and then 43 in Ireland.
18 September, 2006 : – - Thanks to the phenomenal support of the surfing community of the Cape Peninsula, the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most surfers standing on one wave’ was easily surpassed at Muizenberg Corner on Sunday 17 September 2006 when 73 intrepid wave-riders caught and then rode a single wave for longer than five seconds.

Congratulations to one and all…
Original news item below…
31 March 2010 UPDATE: VENUE CHANGE. Due to southerly conditions, the attempt will now be made at Collaroy Beach.
PRESS RELEASE:
Manly Surf School are once again taking on the Guinness Book of World Records next week and hope to have more than 73 surfers standing up and riding a wave.
The Guinness Book of World Records segment is set for Wednesday the 31st of March at 1pm at Collaroy Beach.
Breaking world records is nothing new for Manly Surf School. In 2006, they were successful in setting a new world record after 46 people successfully rode the same wave. While their 2006 record has since been beaten first by Brazil and then South Africa (73) Manly Surf School are up for another challenge, with the help of locals and a number of students from high schools along the Northern Beaches.
Matt Grainger, head coach and owner of Manly, Long Reef and Palm Beach surf schools said, “We’re pretty confident we will beat the record. The surf is set to be a perfect size and the tide will be out. I’d love to bring the world record back to Australia and back to my home break of Long Reef.”
With over 73 people hoping to stand up on one wave, Matt says this is what surfing is all about – party waves with your mates and having fun.
He said, “Surfing is very community oriented. At Manly Surf School we want to take the angst out of surfing by showing the right way to catch waves and have respect for the ocean and others around you so that everyone can enjoy the fun the ocean can deliver.”

Looks like a little bump for the AM
Posted on March 30th, 2010 in South Carolina.Falling 4 footers with offshore winds and 59 degree water may make you crawl out of bed for a morning session. Need to check for local conditions in the afternoon.
