Mops & Logs, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on March 23rd, 2010 in Byron. It’s good to be settling into some cleaner waves plus a new home & office, in Byron Bay today. Yep moving house is a mixture of pleasure and pain, it’s a joy setting up and settling in. But it’s almost like a special kind of torture having to go back and clean up the day after you’ve finished the move. But that is precisely what we spent the vast majority of today doing. Cruising back and forth in cross pattern on the end of a mop. To add to which indignity when we finally got out for our shoot, Mat reported that earlier today was absolute perfect logger heaven in the bay with the smallest crowd he’s seen for quite some time. Oh well, one just can’t be in two places at once. Or at least, not without getting into freaky cloning experiments or some such deal, but I digress. By the time we got out the light was fading, but the crew were still playing. It was a pretty evening in the bay and the logs were holding sway, which is kinda ok because quite simply some days are just too soft for anything else, In Byron Bay Today.
Sadly, a bit dull…

earlier today…

Hello Friends,
South change rattled Sydney’s windows last night and this morning finds grey skies with the chance of a shower and light SSE winds. The MHL Sydney buoy is showing 3 metres of 9 second period south wind swell, but it wasn’t looking too impressive at Dee Why when I first checked it a little after 0700. Looks like the bigger sets could be in the chest high range, but the quality wasn’t impressive enough to persuade anyone to get wet as the day got started.
The outlook is for this pulse to fade steadily through the day and be back to very small in about 24-36 hours. From the latest run of the models it seems that we’re in for tiny to nearly flat conditions through Wednesday. At least one of the models is showing a brief long period pulse out of the south around Thursday morning. So, if you have to pencil one in, I guess that’s the day I’d choose.
Have yourself a top old day!

Dee Why to Narrabeen
Posted on March 22nd, 2010 in Surf Reports.Well, I’ll have to take slight exception to Don’t report from earlier to say that I had a very worthwhile surf at Narrabeen at lunchtime (Sorry, no pics though)
Paddled out at the Point initially and got a few but it was pretty critical and the sets were actually a bit freaky–some in the overhead and half or more territory–and you couldn’t actually ride the big ones from the Point (closeouts) but if you sat in exactly the right place there were perfect, hollow barrels and some sensational rights at The Alley.
By 1pm it had gone a bit messy and by the time I got back to DY the Point there had also pretty much died. Still, if you’re keen there are waves about here, but it’s dropped off considerably since noontime.

Out Of Puff, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on March 22nd, 2010 in Byron.Cyclone Ului hit the Whitsundays early this morning before heading for Proserpine. It was still a category 3 as it crossed the coast. My Nephew Tim was right in the middle of it. The report is a few wrecked boats, some roofs torn off and no serious injuries, thank Huey for that with a storm that size it could’ve been much worse. As far as the swell goes, we’ll everyone’s been frothing at the mouth over the prospect of a serious cyclone swell. But there’s a myth that cyclone swells are often big and perfect. Not so, more often than not it’s just extra powerful long period lumpy bumpy and chunky head height twisted almost unsurfable mess, with radical currents and unpredictable rogue sets thrown into the mix. And guess what, that’s what we got. It’s a mess out there right now, which is kind of fitting, because it’s bloody mess in here too. We just moved house and office this weekend, which is why there was no weekend review this week, sorry about that folks, we planned to do it, but I, unlike Cyclone Ului, quiet simply ran out of puff, In Byron Bay Today.
Little Sunday
Posted on March 21st, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Not a hint of Ului energy – but then we don’t really expect any to get down this far. Instead we have another day of very small but not quite flat easterly wind swell with an average period of 7 seconds. There’s some 10 second stuff in the mix though, and I imagine it’s that which accounts for the odd waist high plus set.
Wind’s set to go around to the NE this afternoon ahead of an evening S-SE change.
So make what you can of it and enjoy your Sunday!

You think Sydney’s cold in winter? Check out Nova Scotia.
Posted on March 21st, 2010 in News Stories, Surf culture, Top stories, weird surf.According to this story from Canada’s CBC TV, Nova Scotia has some great waves during winter. But they’re just a wee bit chilly by Australian standards… an interesting little yarn about how a rural village called Lawrencetown Beach is benefiting from an influx of surfers. Lots of tough Canadian surfers and some very fun looking waves too…
Here’s a teaser:
If you have twenty minutes, the full show is well worth the time to check it out.
