Small but not flat with a few east sets around

Posted on March 20th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

At first light there were heaps of folks prowling about looking for any sign of Ului swell. Here in Sydney they weren’t really finding much, but at least it wasn’t totally flat. As long as a beach has some reasonable exposure to the east (and which ones don’t?), you’re in with a chance of the odd waist to chest high plus set. Some patience will be required however as the sets are only turning up every 5-10 minutes or so.

Swell is mainly out of the east at about a metre at an average of 9 seconds apart. Tide’s high at midday.

Outlook is for the wind to go briefly to the SE before quartering around to the NE for this afternoon.

It looks as though the waves will be best early but with luck they’ll stick around (but gradually decline in average size) over the weekend.

Have yourself a good one!

Little but once again you can catch ‘em

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Still very small – but not so small you can’t surf. Just take your favourite tiny waves gear and you just might get lucky. The numbers don’t look to flash it has to be said (a metre of swell out of the NE at 6 seconds), but for some reason there are knee to waist high sets getting into Dee Why.

We were all getting cautiously hopeful a few days ago about Ului, but it now seems pretty unlikely that we’ll get any substantial energy down this way. Indeed it looks as though you’ll have to go pretty far north to get into the big stuff.

Saturday’s still looking like peak day for swell in the zones that will get the Ului swell. I imagine the points at Noosa will have at least a couple thousand punters each. From the coastalwatch cam at Snapper, it looks like the swell’s pushing in pretty steadily. Conditions are pretty rugged though and of course the crowd intensity is off the richter (as usual).

Go well with your day and let’s hope we get a little perk for tomorrow in Sydney…

Surfrider Northern Beaches beach cleanup Saturday arvo

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in Environment.

surfrider foundation beach clean up at Fishermans Beach Collaroy
Surfrider Northern Beaches will be combing Fishermans Beach at Collaroy Basin for rubbish this Saturday 20 March 2010 from 3pm to 5pm.

The clean up is part of the Tangaroa Blue global project to identify marine debris distribution and origins. So we’ll be working in teams to pre-sort the rubbish we find for our rubbish counter/weighers. The more hands we have, the better.

So go clean up on the waves, then come and clean up on the beaches!

No improvements other than warm beach weather

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in South Carolina.

Thats right, no waves, but nice beach weather over the weekend. Winds will come from the south so enjoy the warmer temps. This will help warm the ocean up a bit which now is at 54 degrees.

Small & Smooth

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Fine, dewy and mild on the Central Coast this Friday morning.  The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east.  There is a no breeze at the moment going northwest then northeast later.  Low tide at 0515 and high tide around 1115.  Local barometer 1018 hpa, 14 degrees C. 90% humidity.  Have a good weekend!

Stay in bed

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in Manly.

Yep it  is one of those days. We were hoping too get a small  push late yesterday but it never arrived and this morning the period has dropped right down as has the quality and the size. Sad but true. The next few days look bad as well. Meanwhile up the coast things are starting to happen with the period increasing sharply overnight and the size as well. A coastal run is your only hope of some decent waves this weekend. Ului has remained on its southward journey but the BOM are still predicting it will turn west and head for the coast making landfall around Mackay on Sunday. It is still a category 3 TC this morning.  The good news down this way is that the weather is going to be amazing over the next few days.  Have yrself a top day.

And So We Wait, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in Byron.

Some are waiting for the swell, which we’ve only seen a beginning of today, others are waiting to see if it’ll flood, and for those further up north it’s a waiting game to see where and when TC Ului will make landfall. You see although Ului has been downgraded from category 4 to a category 3, that’s cold comfort for those who lay in the path of the beast. I know, I’ve been in the direct path of a couple of such storms in my life, and although they turn on good surf on the fringe, it’s pretty damned spooky in the middle. We’ll be fine down here. Although we could see some serious swell, but up the coast, well category 3 still means winds up to 210km an hour and possibly a serious tidal surge to boot. We had a new moon just yesterday so the tides are already big. If Ului crosses the coast at high tide, it ain’t gonna be pretty for those folks, so let’s hope that’s not the case. In the mean time we started to see the beginnings of the swell in the bay today. It’s not so much bigger, but the wave periods much longer and the swell is thicker than it’s been. Already people are complaining of the strength of the current. So by all means surf it and have fun, but treat this swell with the respect it deserves, In Byron Bay Today

Knee high

Posted on March 18th, 2010 in Long Reef.

Hello Friends,

Just barely surfable this morning at Longy. I took the fish out and had a go catching the little lefts. Mostly I lost out to the smarter people who’d brought their mals. The biggest set wave I caught was maybe waist high, but I was still able to grovel it all the way to shore. An accomplishment of some sort!

The water’s so beautiful that you just have to get in, even though the wave energy is at a very low ebb.

Swell is kinda oscillating around between east and south-east according to the buoy. The average period this morning was nearly 11 seconds, with some 13s in the mix as well. But since about lunchtime it’s slumped to an average of only 8. I’d say you’ll need to be super extra keen for the late one.

Like everyone else, I’ve been watching the charts, hoping for a sign that Ului will get into our swell window. But on the latest reckoning, it seems pretty unlikely. The peak days up north will be around Saturday and into Sunday, but my guess is that we’re probably only going to see a modest uptick in the Sydney region.

As for tomorrow morning, well, if it delivers as much as today, I’ll be happy.

Good luck and hope you get a few fun ones!
