Still very small, but not flat

Posted on March 18th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Another day of little but catchable waves unfolding at Sydney region surf spots that like east swell. The average period has stretched out to 11 seconds according to the MHL buoy data, so although the height of the swell at sea is just a metre, we should be getting wave faces on the biggest sets into the chest high range.

The swell conditions should stay around the same through the day, but the wind will gradually drift around to the NE. Obviously that will mean the best afternoon sessions will be in semi-protected north corners.

A scan of the latest run of the wave height models suggests that we’re unlikely to get much energy from Ului this far down the coast. If you want a taste, you’ll have to head north…

Go well with your day!

A hint of something………

Posted on March 18th, 2010 in Manly, Surf Reports.

We have seen a small increase in the period over night. Lets not get too excited as its still small. A slight increase in size and power from yesterday and conditions are absolutely perfect as they always seem to be a this time of the year. High tide is just after 10:35am.  Another couple of feet would be nice. If you want that I suggest you head up the coast and you will get some. Otherwise it looks like Sydney will get a small increase in pulse late today / tom morning but nothing to write home about. That Cyclone is certainly doing its business now…..although models are forecasting things to be a little smaller today. It has started to track South and one would hope that it maintains this direction for the good of all NSW but the forecast track still has it heading for landfall around Mackay towards the 21st. Lets hope it stays southward for a few more days – or better yet moves SE!

Ului Stalking, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on March 18th, 2010 in Byron.

Everyone’s talking about Cyclone Ului although we’re yet to see any real swell. While we’re all jumping up and down at the prospect of a, wave frenzy, spare a thought for our buds in Fiji who just got smashed by Cyclone Thomas. Let’s not forget that as we get swell, our fellows up the coast are about the get slammed as Ului makes landfall somewhere up the Queensland coast. For those of you who are yet to surf Cyclone swell, be respectful of it folks. When it hits it’ll start as short period swell, maybe six seconds or so. But it’ll soon draw out to twelve maybe even fourteen seconds between waves. That’s long thick swell people, which means clean up sets that are capable of standing up in deep water. It may not look any different but when you get out there it’s a whole different ball game. Hopefully we’ll get primo waves and everyone will come through it safely with plenty of stories to tell. We’ll keep you all posted on how it all pans out, In Byron Bay Today.

Huey feeling lazy in Sydney

Posted on March 17th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

We seem to have some little waves coming in from the SE. Nothing dramatic mind you, but if you can have fun on knee to waist high little sets, my guess is that Dee Why will be just one of a number of options on the Northern Beaches this morning. There were a few bods in grabbing the odd slide amongst the shutdowns (and there were lots of those too).

From the look of the wave models, this is about as weak as it gets for the next 4-5 days. Not that we’re going to see a dramatic improvement, but there should be slightly bigger conditions through to about Saturday. Depending on what Ului gets up to, we could get some okay size and conditions for late Saturday into Sunday midday.

But the real action will be up north where it looks as though the swell could be truly massive. The most intense energy zone looks like ranging from about Angourie north to the Noosa region. Could be a very memorable weekend up that way!

South of there the swell will hit various pointy bits, but the overall size is likely to be smaller to quite a bit smaller as you get down toward Sydney.

Go well with your day!

smaller and cleaner

Posted on March 17th, 2010 in Manly.

Well the theme continues – each of the last three days we have seen cleaner conditions yet smaller waves…..a sad state of affairs unless you live further north! Looks like conditions will continue to improve here over the next few days. Things are starting to gather up north now and it will be interesting to see the track of that cyclone – ideally it will stay out at sea but they do have a mind of their own. Latest forecast has  it coming ashore on Friday in Central Queensland.  NZ looks like its worth a crack if you have a few days up your sleeve and some air points. Tomas, that has recently left Fiji, will be spitting out some magic on that East coast of NZ for the next week. Loads of good points over there with no crowds – the opposite of Nossa and the Northern NSW points.   Sadly I am hamstrung for tine so am doing a coastal run here instead. Have yourselves a great day.

Buoys are saying the period has gone up to 10 seconds overnight, so there’s a little more grunt in the knee-high swell now. Enjoy!

Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east.  There is a no breeze at the moment going northwest then northeast later.  High tide at 1005 and low tide around 1610.  Local barometer 1019 hpa, 13 degrees C. 93% humidity.  Have a good one!

Huey’s Teasing Us, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on March 17th, 2010 in Byron.

It really tried so hard to be perfect today, I mean seriously we had good swell, the wind was right, the crowd was down, yet somehow it just didn’t quite get across the line. Don’t get me wrong, there were waves to be had and there was much rejoicing. But there’s a strangeness with the banks at the moment, it looks much better than it actually is, which is kind of reversed because it’s usually better than it looks. It still photographs well, it entices you out into the water, and then you surf it and find there’s something missing, it’s just got no thump at all. It’s weird, there’s plenty of size, but very little power in waves wrapping into the bay at the moment. I reckon the sand must be on the move again. Huey’s teasing us, winding us up a little; one can’t help paddling out for another try. It just looks so pretty, but when you come back in, everyones saying the same thing, there’s just no meat in it. Whatever it is, and my money is on the sand, it’ll pass. We’re still waiting to see if we’ll be hit by that cyclone swell later this week. In the mean time, just enjoy what we’ve got, it may be kinda soft, but it sure looks good, In Byron Bay Today.
