Its gone for now
Posted on April 28th, 2010 in South Carolina. Those strong westerly winds blew down the swell today and it will be flat the next couple of days. Models show a possible weekend bump, but its a tad early to bet the bank on it yet.

On surfari: Tiny on the north coast
Posted on April 28th, 2010 in Broken Head.Hello Friends,
Not much happening along the Broken Head to Suffolk Park beach. Only three or four people in the water chasing very infrequent but pretty looking little waist high peaks. Seems to be much like last night in terms of power – ie not much.
We’re going to head off south to Ballina in search of a possible improvement. What will we find?

Swell, Swell

Local barometer 1014 hpa, 9 degrees C. 82% humidity. Have a good one!
Tail Of Two Sessions, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on April 28th, 2010 in Byron.A day of contrasts in Byron Bay; this morning saw Byron almost looking like a lake. The session of note was in town it was a small wave logger session and the girls gave the guys a serious lesson on how to surf. It was kind of funny watching one particular bloke desperately try to repair his ego by hassling the girls. Of course all he really achieved was to make himself look the fool. The better the girls surfed, the more he tried to fight them for waves. Only to demonstrate that he wasn’t in their league at all, here’s a tip bloke. A good surfer is good surfer, regardless of sex. Show them respect and you’ll look less like a rubberneck. The afternoon session was a joy to behold, it caught everyone by surprise. We all knew there was swell to be had on the open side. Yet we didn’t expect the wind to drop off enough to let it clean up. But right on cue, as the crew knocked off work and school. Huey stopped blowing and the crew were glowing, which was pretty cool, In Byron Bay Today.
Sometimes you win, sometimes…
Posted on April 27th, 2010 in On the road.Hello Friends,
Ensconced in the lovely Broken Head caravan park (where they have wi-fi, woohoo), we are now hoping against all reason that there will be waves some place in the Ballina-Byron region tomorrow.
The day started with a beautiful morning in Crescent Head after kipping out in friend Tim’s parents’ holiday batch backyard. Full moon last night was a treat and the fruit bats visiting the wattle nearby made for a slightly eerie spectacle. During the dark hours the point started making noise, but by morning it had died away and was microscopic, if perfectly formed.
So we headed north, hoping that somehow we might catch up with some swell. Got to Ballina mid afternoon and there appeared to be some small waves on the beaches near town. The mighty Lennox only had a dozen bods attending it. They were catching some low tide scraps right near the top of the point. Looked to be around the waist high mark. We left them to it and checked the reefs but decided they looked a bit weak and small. Might as well make for the digs up at Broken, we thought.
Turned out to be pretty small here too. Hardly surprising really. Went for a late one in the tiny shories on our short boards. Size was basically waist high or less and the power factor was not impressive at all. Still, the water is delightfully warm and we had a nice sunset after a fairly dull and cloudy afternoon.
Will the boys find anything at all tomorrow? Stay tuned… I shall report for your amusement and edification!
Go well one and all.
Wind may be too strong but in the right direction.
Posted on April 27th, 2010 in South Carolina.West at 25 knots! Definitely off shore but the question is will the wind blow down the 3-4 foot swell. Your best chance to find out is early while the tide falls with low tide at 11:30 am.

Curl Curl, Freshwater, Queenscliff Rpt
Posted on April 27th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Back to the familiar dribbly conditions today. Curly is magnifying the swell into something closer to waist-high, but elsewhere it’s considerably smaller. Looks to be fading fast, too!

Mondayitis, Not, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on April 27th, 2010 in Byron. As the long weekend sunk into the little grey cells of most folks as they awoke there was much rejoicing in the bay. Although going by the movements of a few. I’d say that maybe just a few too many frothie’s had the top knocked off them after the Anzac day Two Up games last night. So we let these folks be as they wobbled around the bay, and instead looked for those getting into the glorious autumn weather that Huey blessed us with today. Granted it was pretty windy at times, but we did see plenty of sunshine. The temperature was about as pleasant as it gets, and if that wasn’t enough for a public holiday we even had a new south swell steaming its way up the coast. Ok so there were spots the swell wasn’t getting into, but for those who knew where to look, there were waves, and some were even pretty damn tasty, In Byron Bay Today.
On Surfari: Old Bar and Crescent Head
Posted on April 26th, 2010 in Crescent Head.Hello late evening fans,
Set off on my biennial surfari with mate Guy this morning. (We first started doing these trips back in 1977!). We left Sydney with some pretty tasty looking conditions early and were therefore hopeful about what we’d find. We checked the situation at Old Bar around 1400. Winds were good at the point, but there was no hint of swell, so we pushed onward, hoping to find something at Crescent before the light went away.
What we found was extremely small, but not totally flat conditions. Fortunately we have mals as well as short boards, so we went for a splash. It was very inconsistent and rarely above knee high, but there were three or four sets, so against the evidence of our senses, we’re nurturing hopes for tomorrow…
Here’s the wave of the late arvo session… it came in while we were getting ready to go out…
