Anzac Day 2010 – LEST WE FORGET
Posted on April 25th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.Last year I trekked the Kokoda Track and the year before I walked the Sandakan Death March in Borneo culminating in climbing Mt Kinabalu. I still can’t appreciate what our young soldiers endured under fire and duress. To all our current serving troops – Good Job! Constant rain and warm on the Central Coast this Sunday morning. The swell is smooth and very small at 1 – 1.25 feet from the east northeast. High tide at 0510 and low tide around 1140. Local barometer 1007 hpa, 17 degrees C. 97% humidity. Have a great long weekend!
Can it get smaller?
Posted on April 24th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
The answer to the question posed in my headline is “probably not”. Hard to see how a person could hope to catch one of the ripples on offer at Dee Why. Hard to believe that there would be anything more substantial elsewhere. The buoy data tells the story. It shows 0.75 metres on average from the E-SE with a wind choppy average period of 5 seconds. There is a curious 12 second component in the data, so just maybe there will be the odd knee high bomb set turning up every now and then.
The Bureau is calling for some south swell to show up tomorrow at some point. There’s no sign of it on the buoys off to the south of Sydney at this stage. However, the forecast says we’ll have building NW winds at the same time, so I’m only cautiously hopeful that we’ll see a little something in the afternoon.
On Monday the wind is expected to go SW to southerly, so there’s a better chance some swell energy will get ashore… here’s hoping because that’s when I set off north for a little biennial surfari with an old friend…
Have yourself a good Saturday!

Anzac Day Long Weekend
Posted on April 24th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this Saturday morning. The weather is meant to close in and get showery later. The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east northeast. There is a light to moderate west northwest breeze forecast to freshen later. High tide at 0410 and low tide around 1605. Local barometer 1010 hpa, 16 degrees C. 94% humidity. Have a great long weekend!
C’mon Huey, it’s April, not November
Posted on April 23rd, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Downward we go, heading toward flatness. Dee Why’s off the surf spot list this morning and looking at the latest from the MHL buoy, you can see why. It’s less than a metre and coming from the ENE, so there might be a touch more energy at places like Manly. But if you can jag something waist high, I reckon you’re doing very well indeed.
The latest run of the WAMs brings no joy either. On current reckoning, the best we can hope for is a wee little south pulse (knee to waist high) around about Monday.
What can ya do but wait?
Go well!

Posted on April 23rd, 2010 in Surf Reports.Camera problems this morning mean no pics from me. However, I can assure you, you’re not missing much. I’d have referred to Freshwater & Queenscliff as unsurfably tiny, and Curl Curl as only for the desperate. Swell remains minimal & not very powerful. Sorry!

More Than A Bear Can Bear, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on April 23rd, 2010 in Byron. There are so many moods to this place it’s hard to say what I’m into the most. For some it’s the spring and summer seasons for sure, while for others winter is a favourite. Me, I seem to really love them all. But there’s something just a little extra special about an autumn day just before a wind change that really floats my boat. It’s a subtle thing, the surf isn’t actually perfectly offshore, but it’s still clean. The crowd is expecting it to be bumpy so it’s really not that crowded at all. The southerly airstream is coming to an end and the wind is light. There’s various styles of cloud formations with streaks of light pouring through at random moments. It’s an almost unbearably beautiful combination. A few afternoon slides, not so big but almost empty, then a lightshow from Huey across the bay of plenty. It’s just so ridiculously joyous that it’s almost more than a Bear can bear, In Byron Bay Today.
