Looks puny from here…
Posted on April 22nd, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
As PB’s noted, our power levels in Sydney have slipped down another cog or two. Yesterday at this time the average period was still close to 10 seconds, but now it’s down to 7. That really is pushing the envelope of surfability and not surprisingly Dee Why is unpopulated.
The outlook is for a week of flatness in Sydney with a possible uptick into the barely surfable range on Monday. We’re just out of luck at the moment.
There seems to be the possibility of an improvement toward the middle of next week, but it’s not a sure thing. More a hope really…
Aw look, just get out there and have yourself a great day, okay?

21 Apr 10 @ 04:05pm by REBECCA WOOLLEY
A DRAMATIC surf rescue saw an English tourist pulled to safety after he became caught in a strong rip while swimming with a group of mates off Avalon beach.
The man was swimming with three others, after the surf patrol had finished for the day last Friday, when he was swept out to sea, but luckily was spotted by surf lifesaver Donovan Macintosh.
“They were on the edge of the sandbank, yet only about two metres away from the drop-off to a channel where there was a strong rip,” Roger Sayers, Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s publicity officer, said. “As Donovan walked back down the beach with a loud hailer to tell them to come in as it was a dangerous place to swim, the swimmer farthest out was swept out to sea.
“Donovan ran back up to the clubhouse and alerted others to what was going on, then grabbed a rescue board and ran back down the beach towards the rip,” he said.
Nick Williams, also from Mr Macintosh’s patrol, headed out into the surf – which had a two metre swell and strong winds – and managed to secure one of the swimmers just before he went under.
Mr Sayers said the rescue was a timely reminder to foreign tourists and visiting Aussies who were unfamiliar with the surf to be careful when swimming in the ocean.
This long weekend marks the end of the surf lifesaving season and there would be no patrols until September, he said.
“When the surf is very small, you can still have a strong rip,” Mr Sayers said.
“The inexperienced ones do not want to be hit by a wave so they go to where the water is calmer, that could be by the start of a channel that has a rip. If the flags are not up, extreme caution should be exercised.”

Fine and Fantastic on C C
Posted on April 22nd, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this Thursday morning. The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east. There is a very light northwest breeze forecast to go northeast later. Low tide at 0850 and high tide around 1500. Local barometer 1017 hpa, 12 degrees C. 95% humidity. Have a good one!
Ahhhh That’s Nice, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on April 22nd, 2010 in Byron. To all those asking what happened yesterday, sorry folks we were called to Brisbane, and quite simply couldn’t be in two places at once. Got to say after sitting in that radically intense traffic jam on the highway yesterday evening it was jolly nice to wake up and be back, in Byron Bay today. We saw one of those very typically autumn steel grey days today. The sun never really got out for more than a bit of peep showing. That is until late this afternoon when the clouds parted briefly and Huey turned on the goods, as if we weren’t spoilt enough. We had some sweet little waves, not particularly huge, but hey it was fun, uncrowded and had many folks smiling, In Byron Bay Today.
Mals at Longy
Posted on April 21st, 2010 in Long Reef.Jumped in the water at Longy with a mate on our mals. Biggest thing I caught was maybe chest high on the takeoff. Water is still warm and, with so little activity lately, quite clear as well. Not many people bothering this morning so basically just us two sharing little peelers.

In a holding pattern of smallness
Posted on April 21st, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Another beautiful morning in Sydney. All the pieces are in place. A light offshore breeze, blue skies with a few clouds around the edges, an incoming, but not extreme tide, and swell coming out of the nearly ideal ESE with a respectable average period of 10 seconds. Only one setting is wrong – the average height of the swell at sea is still bumping along at a paltry one metre.
From the RealSurf crows nest I could only spot two people flopping around in the beach break at Dee Why. The point was too small to have attracted any takers. Set waves look pretty similar to yesterday’s offerings, ie around the waist high mark.
Sadly, from my reading of this morning’s set of WAMs, the next three days look like being even smaller. Basically it looks as though we’re facing near flat conditions from Phillip Island around to Stradbroke. Sure hope those models are unduly pessimistic.
Ah well, won’t do any harm to keep on smilin’ will it?

Oh yeah, it’s very small again in Sydney
Posted on April 20th, 2010 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Watched the beach for some time this morning waiting for one of the extra keen people in the water at Dee Why to catch something. Eventually a wee line appeared and despite a great thrashing of arms, the would-be-surfer had to watch it slip past and fold softly over on the sand. Back to waiting…
The latest MHL data shows about a metre of SE swell with an average period of 9 seconds for Sydney. It seems to be a touch bigger north and south of our region (ie an average height of 1.5 m at Byron) but the average period (ie the power level) is shorter.
Outlook for the rest of the week remains pretty paltry. If we’re lucky it’ll stay just barely into the catchable range at exposed spots, but gee those WAMs look quiet at the moment. And you’d have to say we aren’t looking like getting a repeat of last year at this time…
