Right Sized, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on April 18th, 2010 in Byron.Spending time in the realm of Huey makes me feel right sized. In this world we’re encouraged to act from ego and compete with each other for power and prestige. Yet spend enough time in and around the ocean and one develops an innate a sense of powerlessness. It’s a sense that nothing I do can or will change it, that I have zero control over it and that any thoughts of being in control in the realm of Huey are nothing more than delusional. It’s a sense of being at peace with the idea of feeling really small and insignificant. In a world where we’re bombarded with the idea that big and powerful are measures of success, I suspect that a sense of insignificance is not a bad thing, In Byron Bay Today.
Beautiful morning along the beaches
Posted on April 17th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
An incoming tide this morning combined with light breezes and a little SE swell turned the lights on at Dee Why for the early risers. Nothing spectacular, but the bomb sets were into the shoulder high range at the point. The beach was lining up and shutting down on most of the bigger ones. Outlook is for the breeze to get around to the easterly quarters later, so this morning is primetime. Busy of course and the swell seems fairly setty, so the lulls may be a factor.
Swell is coming in from the SSE. It’s averaging around 1.5 metres at sea with a respectable 11 second average period. There’s the odd 14 second period set in the mix, so if you’re in the right spot at the right time this morning, it should be possible to connect with some juice.
Outlook is for the swell energy to gradually fade as we head into the new week. In fact on the latest reckoning, this morning at south swell spots is possibly as good as it’ll get between now and next weekend. Hope those models are being too pessimistic!
Get out there, have a great day and I’ll see if I can find another picture or two as the day unfolds.

Curly-Freshy Rpt
Posted on April 17th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Yep – the swell’s here! But a bazillion bods at Curly already know that. Plenty of headhigh bumps packing into there, whilst on the other side of the Diggers conditions are more modest. Those wonderful banks at Curly seem to now be shutting down though
Close of play, Friday
Posted on April 16th, 2010 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
One of those days when I was checking it every hour or two, hoping the swell would perk up. The swell size at sea didn’t vary much today, but the average period did increase from less than 8 seconds this morning, to almost 10 this afternoon. Should be cloudy tomorrow, but with lighter wind than we had to put up with today, so with luck the swell will stick around and there’ll be some fun ones to be had before lunch.
The current run of the forecast models suggests we might have some waist to chest high waves at the more exposed south swell spots on Saturday morning.
Catchya tomorrow!

Something at Curly… but…
Posted on April 16th, 2010 in Curl Curl.Had one of those “Dad can you drive me to… ” moments that I subsequently enlarged to a surf check. Stopped by Curly to see what the little swell was doing. It was bigger than Dee Why, but the quality was strictly so-so. A bit junky with a light sideshore, but that would be okay if there was also a little more energy. Waves were occasionally into the chest high plus range for the reasonable size crowd, but they were just sort of flabby and gutless looking. Which kinda makes sense given the average period was around the 8-9 second mark.
The good news is that the latest run of data from the MHL buoys shows the period ramping up pretty steeply in the last three hours… so maybe by this afternoon it’ll start to turn into something more interesting…

Some swell, but not much to start

Hello Friends,
No eruption of swell for us this morning in Sydney. Huey has decided to disregard what the forecast models have been showing all week. This morning’s early risers at Dee Why found only a small increase in size had occurred overnight. It’s not quite as dire as yesterday evening when your correspondent went for a splash hoping to intercept a few forerunners of the promised long period swell.
There is some activity way down south at the MHL’s Eden waverider buoy. It’s a couple metres with a 12-15 second period, so we’re not without hope of an improvement as the day goes along. But at 0700, there wasn’t much going on. Maybe the odd chest high bomb set if you were lucky – but mostly it’s smaller than that. And consistency is an issue as well.
Fingers crossed… and of course we’ll keep an eye on it through the day.
Go well!
