Cold, rainy but waves (if you were up early!)

Posted on May 31st, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

1030: all blown out now…

earlier I wrote…

The keen were on it for the early at Dee Why while the wind was still favourable. Swell seemed to be a bit smaller than last night, although the power settings look pretty similar. Mind you, a rain squall cut short my observation, so maybe there were some bigger sets.

It’s due to swing SE soon and push up into the 30-40 kt range as it does. That, combined with the cold temps and showers will no doubt take its toll on the surf options. As the wind kicks in, the swell is expected to ramp up, so if you’re determined to get wet this morning there should be something in the most protected corners.

Go well with your day!

Mostly wind waves

A steady SE blow has caused a bit more chop than we like. In fact, the wind has actually been blowing through the night making the morning waves a bit lumpy. Expect the same for Monday.

PICS: Nth Narrabeen Sun 30 May 2010 – noon

Sunday the 30th of May should make the top ten best days of this year. After shooting for a couple hours at Manly, I wandered north to see how the swell was doing at spots like Mona Vale and Northy. Here’s a selection of shots from the latter…

Yucky Rpt

Posted on May 31st, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Yeah, look, I’d be a bit wary of all the crud that’s probably floating around out there after the rain. And what I saw at Curl Curl & Freshy wasn’t that appetising, wave-wise. It’s overhead and pretty messy. Protected corner, anyone?

Showers, windy and mild on the Central Coast this Monday morning. The swell is smooth and chunky at 3 – 4 feet + from the east southeast. There is moderate west southwest breeze forecast to go more south and strengthen later. Low tide at 0445 and high tide around 1040. Local barometer 1001 hpa, 13 degrees C. 93% humidity. Have a great week!

PICS: Sunday morning, Manly pumping

Posted on May 31st, 2010 in Manly, Top stories.

Sunday was very good to Sydney’s surf zones. Hundreds of people got wet as a punchy ESE swell lit up spots all over the place. I began a day of shooting in the morning at Manly. First I spent some time up at the Queensie end shooting the folk getting amongst it. After an hour or so, I ducked down to North Steyne to fang off a few more. Ended up with around 200 snaps. If you were in the water and you were one of the people catching waves… well, I just might have caught you…

Coming soon… North Narrabeen at noon

Grom City, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on May 31st, 2010 in Byron.

Ok, so the swell backed right off, and the wind dropped. The clouds peeled back revealing a cold but sunny Sunday, which all adds up to choice conditions for the groms, in Byron Bay today. It’s kind of good to see too, we all got spoilt with solid swell while the little ones were at school this week. It’s good to see them all getting their turn and throwing some micro moves on this wintery old Sunday. Sure the older crew were out and having moments, but it’s been so long since we’ve had good weekend conditions for the little ones. We thought we’d mainly focus on them having a blast in the shorey. This one’s for some of the groms, In Byron Bay Today.

Sunday starts calm with waves

Posted on May 30th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Around midnight Saturday, the Eden buoy shows the average swell jumped from around 3 metres to nearly 6. At the same time the power setting went from about 8 seconds to nearly 10 sec. Early on the swell hitting Dee Why looked to be quite clean and nicely lined up with a light NW breeze. The outlook is for the breeze to change to wind and then to strong wind later. At the same time we should see the swell going up around a metre or so (at least).

I’m planning to do a bit of shooting today, so if all goes according to plan, there should be another gallery up later. As usual my approach will be mainly to capture average surfers looking their best. That’s why if you see me shooting or notice a gallery from a day you were in the water, it’s worth looking to see if I got you busting your best move.

More later…
