Video: Dee Why point watershots 28/5

Posted on May 27th, 2010 in Dee Why, Top stories, Video.

The wind came up late and that meant there were glassy and solid conditions at Dee Why on Weds morning, tthe 26th of May. I had Sony’s ultra-slim waterproof DSC-TX5 tucked into my wettie so I shot a few stills and some high def video. The weather was rainy and grey, so the action’s not too colourful but the little camera worked quite well. I put about a minute and a bit of clips together along with a taste of a Dave Kowalski tune. Enjoy!

Dee Why Afternoon update: Crapola

Posted on May 27th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

If you’re thinking of rushing home for a quick afternoon surf, I wouldn’t bother. Looks like there’s the odd wave out there, but nobody’s actually riding anything. Here’s what it looks like at Dee Why Point.

Ugly Conditions

Posted on May 27th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Cloudy, windy and mild on the Central Coast this Thursday morning.  The swell is messy and disjointed at 4 – 6 feet from the east southeast.  There is light to moderate south southeast breeze.  High tide at 0740 and low tide around 1320.  Local barometer 1010 hpa, 15 degrees C. 80% humidity.  Have a good one!

Huey Steps Up, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on May 27th, 2010 in Byron.

Yes folks we have swell, real swell. Not the fluffy little north coast wind waves that we so often gratefully play with. But joyous powerful, clean and straight swell in Byron Bay today. Not surprisingly there was much rejoicing. We’ve all been stumbling around trying to come to grips with the loss of a mate. When suddenly Huey decided to step up to the plate and remind us what winter is all about in the bay. Good call Huey, it’s just what some of us needed. It’s about clean clear lines and an opportunity to go and fish out some nasty chunky beach breaks away from the madding crowd of newbies in the bay. Not that I’m picking on the beginners. It’s just that occasionally one really needs to score few on the kind of day when Huey decides who will or won’t make it out there, In Byron Bay Today.

Gale warning, heavy rain expected

Posted on May 26th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

As I write this, the expected gale has not yet arrived. But the leaden skies and occasionally heavy rain have turned up as expected and as a consequence the beach isn’t looking too attractive at all. The swell has picked up a bit though and that should mean places with a wave last night should have one again this morning – until the gale arrives.

Hope to get a picture later when the light levels improve.

The weather promises to be pretty ordinary for the next couple days but we seem to have some prospects for swell. Estimates vary, but there seems to be a consensus amongst the model interpretations that our region should see at least a couple metres of SE swell from this afternoon through to Saturday. It may lull back a bit (but not go flat) on Sunday before kicking up in a major way on Monday. We had a call like this a week or so ago and it didn’t play out to be quite as big as expected. When one sees 5-6 metres at the outer end of the forecast range, it’s worth taking on board, but probably not something one would bank on just yet…

Wind was running late this morning

Posted on May 26th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

We made it to noon without really seeing anything like the predicted gale force wind in Sydney. (Turned nasty now though!) Basically it was pretty much glassy along the beaches this morning while at the same time the swell was pushing up as both the period and average height improved. The latest numbers from the MHL buoy shows the 9sec SE swell is getting close to the 3 metre mark on average (peak sea + swell is around 4m). We were getting a few sets with trough to crest faces in the three metre range on the bombs. The 9-10 second period ensured that lots of waves had pretty reasonable push as well. Certainly there were a few slabby ones getting into the joint.

I have a little Sony TX5 waterproof point and shoot camera to test at the moment. The pictures shown below were taken with it. Probably not the optimal conditions for a test though. The light levels were very low and as a consequence the shutter speed had to be pretty slow, which in turn meant I was getting blurry shots. I’ll try to post a little gallery later of pics I thought worth keeping.

Things may improve Wednesday.

Looks like peak winds, waves, etc are Wednesday morning. It was rough late in the day Tuesday and if the winds stay more Northerly, it may be a good day to surf along some parts of the state. I think clean up Thursday morning may also be in order so go check your local spot.

Dee Why: A few waves now, gale force southerly arriving any time.

Posted on May 26th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

A few waves on the Point but most of the good ones are breaking wide. BIG southerly on the way soon.  Was gusting to 50 knots at Pt Perpendicular at 5am. On the way to Sydney in the next hour or so. This view is going to look VERY different by noon after the southerly arrives.

Foul weather coming, Again!

Posted on May 26th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Showers and mild on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  Wind and flood warnings issued.  The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 3 feet from the east southeast.  There is light southwest breeze forecast to go southeast and strengthen later.  High tide at 0645 and low tide around 1235.  Local barometer 997 hpa, 13 degrees C. 95% humidity.  Have a good one!

Life, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on May 26th, 2010 in Byron.

We had some swell, sunshine, moments of peace and a lot of sadness as the word spread around town, in Byron Bay today. No matter how many family members or friends one loses as life winds on, you never really get used to the feeling. Life however marches on regardless of who’s here and who is suddenly not; it’s just the nature of things. We are powerless over all this stuff, which is not a bad thing to remember at times. For those in the Harbord Freshie area of Sydney, it was old mate Dave Steadman that passed away. A lot of the crew down there will miss him, I know we will. I don’t know what else to say, the waves were ok and it’s a stunner of a day. But it’s kinda hard to engage with it when you’re grieving, In Byron Bay Today.
