Move along, nothing to see here
Posted on May 21st, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Are you faced with an inescapable obligation during surfing hours today or this weekend? Well, looks like you might be in luck because this morning finds Dee Why abandoned thanks to the SE swell weakening a bit more overnight. Energy levels are now very low and from the latest run of the forecast models, it seems they’re set to stay this way for another few days yet. There might be little mal waves to be had if you’ve got the time to hang around at a suitably exposed spot. But I wouldn’t expect much above the waist high mark.
The wind was well behaved this morning, but by this afternoon the Bureau says we should have a light southerly. Speaking of light southerlies, I was wondering if terms such as light winds, fresh winds, strong winds, etc are defined anywhere. You’ll be unsurprised perhaps to hear that the Bureau of Meterology has an official set of definitions for such terms. So, Light winds are officially those that are 10kts (19/kmh) or less. On land that means wind can be felt on your face and leaves rustle, while at sea “Small wavelets, ripples formed but do not break: A glassy appearance maintained.” Now ya know!
Have a good one with whatever you get up to today!

Petition: dog access to just one section of just one beach
Posted on May 21st, 2010 in Opinion.Jane writes to advocate for a dog’s permitted beach zone in Warringah…
Out of the nine beaches over which Warringah Council has jurisdiction, dogs and their owners are not allowed on any of these at any time of the day or the year. The only dog swimming area they provide is at North Curl Curl Lagoon and that is often heavily polluted.
Given that around 40% of Warringah households own a dog this means that the Council is not representing its constituents. Please support democracy and sign our petition to allocate a stretch of a beach (approx. 50 metres in width) for dogs with their owners. This could be achieved, with minimal impact, by allocating a quiet part of a beach for limited periods e.g. before 9am and after 5pm.
http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/allow-dog-access.html
If you are not a dog owner then please empathise with your neighbours. We are becoming increasingly more legislated: the “nanny state”. What is next? Fines for swimming outside of the flags? Fines for drinking from plastic bottles on the beach? No mountain biking in National Parks (too late)? Banning rock fishing? No children in nappies on our rock pools? Once the freedom’s gone, it’s gone
Thank you

Glide Time, In Byron Bay Today
Posted on May 21st, 2010 in Byron.Could it really get much smaller than it was, in Byron Bay today? Well yeah it could. It could not be breaking at all, so gratitude for what was on offer was the order of the day. For those equipped with a decent log and some spare time there were some very fun little slides on offer in the bay. Although one did have to wait for them. There were also some reasonable sized, if not windy peaks for the little white board set around the open side, yet they too were few and far between. Yes folks it’s just that time of year it’s just plain quiet both in and out of the water at the moment. Town is empty right now and Hueys not turning on much in the ocean either. No doubt the pace will quicken again soon. In the mean time, its dust off the old log, kick back, relax and just paddle out for a little glide time, In Byron Bay Today.
Not entirely tiny
Posted on May 20th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Quiet sort of morning where Dee Why’s concerned. Not much wind about for the early risers and there is still a bit of swell. It’s pretty episodic though. As you can see from my picture, there are chest high sets. But, in between it’s not doing much of anything. The swell is averaging about 1.5 metres from the SE and the typical period is 9 seconds. However, there is some 13 sec stuff in the mix which no doubt accounts for those sets.
From the shape of the forecasts we’re still looking at an extended period of small to marginal conditions. The models are showing the average size of the swell at sea staying around the metre mark today, dropping tomorrow and pushing up again a bit on the weekend.
Have yourself a good one!

Sun Showers, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on May 20th, 2010 in Byron.
Winter is almost upon us in Byron and Huey’s doing the usual late autumn routine. Small swell, sunshine, then wind & rain squalls come charging over the cape from the south. Most who live here know to keep an eye on the skies. Those who don’t, get drenched with little to no warning. This can go on for hours or a day until eventually Huey decides to screw with those of us who think we’ve got the routine all worked out. Then we get hit with a sun shower just make sure everyone gets caught off guard. It’s kind of fun if you don’t take it all too seriously, and don’t mind getting randomly soaked. It’s a bit of a bummer if you do mind, because when all is said and done. We either play the cards we’re dealt, or we don’t get to play at all. That’s just the way it is, In Byron Bay Today.
