Near, but not quite, flat

Posted on May 19th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

At first glance I thought we were into flatness this morning. But after watching it for awhile and seeing a couple waist high plus set waves up the beach from Dee Why SLSC, I’m thinking there might be a little something for the patient at south exposed stretches.

According to the MHL data, the average height of swell at sea is a bit better than 1.5 metres. However, the average period is only 7 seconds. Fortunately there’s also some 10 sec component in there – hence the sets. From the shape of the data down at south, we might see a small improvement in the average period (it’s up to 9 seconds at Eden for instance).

There isn’t much wind to start with, but as the showers clear away, the SE’r will gradually shut down the places with the best exposure to the swell. So this morning’s probably about as good as it gets for Sydneysiders. From here forward looks like marginal to nearly flat through the weekend and beyond.

Have yourself a great day!

NZ-built UK surf reef criticised by experts | NATIONAL News

Posted on May 19th, 2010 in Surf News.

Who hasn’t dreamt of a perfect man-made reef at some unsurfable but consistent spot? Surfers and local officialdom in Bournemouth UK had such a dream. But the results? Well…

The performance of a three million pound $NZ6.2m New Zealand-built artificial surf reef at a British tourist beach has been sub-standard, according to Bournemouth Borough Council.

Hump Day Rpt

Something closer to surfable on the horizon this morning. Not a lot happening at DY Pt, and Freshwater is shutting down, but the shoulder-high bumps along the Curly stretch were providing some slowish rides

Showers but Clearing Later?

Posted on May 19th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Showers and mild on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.    The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the southeast.  There is light to moderate southwest breeze forecast to go southeast later.  Low tide at 0630 and high tide around 1235.  Local barometer 1012 hpa, 12 degrees C. 98% humidity.  Have a good one!

Going, But Not Quite Gone, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on May 19th, 2010 in Byron.

Was I just a tripping or did I see some increase in the swell this morning? I’m not sure I could have sworn I saw waves earlier on, in Byron Bay today. Yet by the time I’d taken care of a few chores and hit the beach. The bay was starting to look not much different to a windy mill pond, and the open side was experiencing a rapid decrease in swell as well. I suspect we were witnessing the tail end of the southerly swell that’s been sweeping past the bay for the last few days. But despair not folks; for I believe if we all focus hard enough, Huey may just bless us with a little pulse of southeast swell over the next few days. In fact it may be working already, as just on sunset we saw a slight increase in the very small lines as they wrapped their way through a stunning afternoon, In Byron Bay Today.

Rainy start

Posted on May 18th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

We woke up to the sound of rain on the roof and the swish of tyres on wet streets this morning. And surfers woke up to an ocean of calmness. From the look of Dee Why this morning, it’s going to be a challenge to catch much of anything there at all. The MHL buoy shows swell out of the SE but with only a metre and just 8 seconds average period to work with, Huey’s not likely to serve up anything very exciting – or even rideable.

There wasn’t much wind to start with, but the forecast is for a moderate southerly to get going this morning. Some of the models suggest that this might lead to a small pulse for south facing stretches tomorrow morning. But overall, the outlook according to the latest wave height forecast is for marginal to flat conditions across the next three days. The prospect of another good size pulse on Saturday has disappeared from the long range estimates.

Oh well… Huey will get over this slackness sooner or later….

Have yourself a top old day!

Warmest April Global Temps on Record, NOAA says

Posted on May 18th, 2010 in Environment, Top stories.

It’s not just you.

Sydney’s extraordinary late season warm water temperatures may not just be a fluke of the east coast currents. According to NOAA, the planet has just experienced the warmest April and January to April period since recordings began.

If you have a look at the graphic below, you’ll note that the SE coast of Oz is well above the norm, but so too is most of the Tasman Sea.

Warmest April Global Temperature on Record, NOAA SaysScienceDaily May 17, 2010 — The combined global land and ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for both April and for the period from January-April, according to NOAA. Additionally, last month's average ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for any April, and the global land surface temperature was the third warmest on record.

Bleugh!

OK, look, you COULD actually go surfing this morning – and admittedly there were people doing it (with mixed results) at both Sth Curly and Freshwater. But the swell is pretty weak & tiny, and the sky is pretty grey. Crowd factor negligible
