The Uphill Climb, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.

Posted on June 27th, 2010 in Byron.

So that’s it, the winter solstice has come and gone during the last week in Byron Bay, and so we begin the uphill climb to summer. Yeah I know it’s a little early to be thinking of summer, especially when it’s been as cold as it has. But winter doesn’t hold sway for long in these climbs. Spring will be upon us, as per usual before the official end of winter, and no doubt the northerlies will come hurtling down the coast loaded with jumping Humpbacks on their way home from Hervey Bay. So till then enjoy the cold slides while they’re on offer. Sure it may be kind of cold right now, but it’ll be plenty hot soon enough, In Byron Bay Today.

Peak passed, breezy to start

Posted on June 26th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

The morning kicked off with around 10 kts of N-NW wind and a small mainly easterly swell of about a metre at sea. Yesterday’s reasonably juicy 10 sec average period and close to two metres of ESE swell is but a memory. Average period now is back to 8 seconds – although there was still some 10 second stuff showing in the data from the MHL Sydney buoy.

Where Dee Why was concerned this morning sets were into the chest high range and quite clean for the small crowd getting amongst it.

Outlook is for the wind to gradually move around to s-sw and then to be southerly by nightfall. They’re also expected to accelerate into the 20-25 kt range and stay at about that level through to Sunday morning. The latest from the Bureau says that it’ll continue at that intensity through the day. The models show the swell lining up with the wind direction and pushing up into the two metre range. With luck there’ll be some fun size stuff at the semi-exposed south swell spots.

As of Saturday morning the wave forecast models for the week ahead are generally looking pretty marginal. The broad trend is for the swell to be mainly out of the SSE to SE over the next 5-6 days. Monday could be about like today, but then it looks likely to fade to flat by the end of the week.

Sure hope that call turns out to be unduly pessimistic.

Looks like the SW winds are not letting up.

Which means they are still blowing through the night so the morning is sloppy and choppy. Expect these same conditions Saturday and Sunday.

Dee Why: Grey, a few waves around, but lots of waiting

Posted on June 25th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Certainly been an odd winter in Sydney this year. I’m very much missing those usual crisp, blue skies we are accustomed to seeing this time of year but we just keep waking up to more grey skies and intermittent rain showers over and over.  And it’s not even enough rain (nor in the right places) to make you feel like it’s actually doing some good for the dam levels.

I got up at 0630 this morning hoping we’d see some nice conditions. At first light there were already 6 eager hopefuls in the water at the Point, but it’s been a less than exciting day. Seems there’s the odd decent chest high wave through then it goes flat for five minutes and with all the sand up the middle channel at the Point, anything over chest high seems to be closing out.

Still only about 6 out — about the same at the beachie, but it’s not looking much better there either.

More rain on the forecast for tomorrow. Southerly change on Saturday arvo.

Here’s a cool little auto-production video maker tool I stumbled across yesterday. You just upload a dozen photos or short vid clips and it turns it into a 30 sec animated preso for you:

Some fun waves are still around through Saturday

Posted on June 25th, 2010 in South Carolina.

But you have to get them in the eraly morning before the SW winds chop them up. So ride some glass at 7:00 am tomorrow as the lunar tide begins to drop..

Well, hello, sth-easterly swell! Dunno quite how to interpret it on these unfamiliar beaches, but the guy I spoke to at Sandshoes said it works better with more south in it. And what I saw at Nth Cronulla looked plenty tasty enough, direction notwithstanding. I assume the whitewater I saw south from there was/is Cronulla Pt, but that Shark island wasn’t quite happening. Waves are headhigh+ and the wind wasn’t a factor when I looked just after 9am

Friday waves

Posted on June 25th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Huey’s bumped up the power setting a notch and put the helm more to the east. The average height at sea is around the 1.5 metre mark and that’s pretty much where it’s been for the last few days, so I reckon the quality improvement this morning is down to that uptick in the period setting. Sets at Dee Why are into the chest high plus range with the odd bomb (see pic) coming through. Not much wind to start with, so don’t be put off by the dull skies, there should be waves in lots of places.

We have a birthday boy on the site this morning. You’ll find his latest reading of the surf outlook entrails down the page from this report. Yes, I’m speaking of the Goat! Way back in 1995, only a few months after I’d started this site, Roger sent me an email offering to send in the odd report. It rapidly became apparent that he really, really knew the ways and wiles of the NSW coast. His surf prediction ability was (and still is!) exceptional and it wasn’t long before he became the go-to chap for surf forecasts. My memory is hazy about the precise sequence of events that lead to him becoming the Goat, but the classical allusion to ancient soothsayers appealed to both of us. Almost a decade and a half on, and we’re both still having fun with the RealSurf project – and both still surfing!

Go well one and all!
