Winter Holidays, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 25th, 2010 in Byron.

People kept asking me where all these people came from, in Byron Bay today. Well maybe the National Parks has been planting grommets in the Bitou Bush and winter is when they blossom, but I doubt it. If I were a betting kind of bloke, I’d be putting my money on the fact that the Queensland school holidays officially start tomorrow. It’s also been Australian Universities winter semester for nearly a month now. That would certainly explain the crowds we’ve been experiencing in the water of late. Or to put it simply folks it’s been winter holidays for three weeks now and we’ve got another three weeks to go. So there’s the answer, it’s time for patience with each other, and it’s time to look for quieter breaks. If you’re coming to visit, remember to treat the local crew the way you’d like to be treated at your home break. A little courtesy and respect goes a long way to great holiday, In Byron Bay Today.

Fun ones in the fog early, clearing by lunch

Posted on June 24th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,
Period has crept up a bit to 9 seconds and the swell is more SE but still at around the 1.5 metre mark. There are more people in the water now than earlier, but not dramatically so. Wind is still pretty light as well and I’d expect more than a few spots to now be offering options of interest….

earlier I wrote:

Quite foggy between the RealSurf crows nest and the beach this morning, so it wasn’t until I opened the picture in Photoshop (testing out the very latest version atm) that I could even see people were in the water. Anyway, Shari who was out for a constitutional, confirmed not only that it was in the waist high range, but that it was glassy and really fun looking. In fact, I’m pretty sure I saw Kevin Rudd getting in a quick wave before some kind of big deal meeting later this morning. Julia Gillard was taking off deeper than him though…

According to the latest from the MHL buoy, swell is primarily from the east and at almost exactly the same size as yesterday. However, the average period has bumped up from around 7 seconds yesterday to a bit better than 8 now. There’s some 10 second stuff in the mix as well.

The models are lining up with the Bureau on the prospects for tomorrow. At this stage – according to the aforesaid models – it looks as though Friday could be the peak opportunity for a wave across the coming week. One of the long range predictions shows an influx of winter grade south swell for the southern half of NSW late next week. However, as we model watchers know, the guesstimates for 7 days hence have a way of changing from “it’s gonna be big” to “there might be something surfable” as we close in on the date. So, “cautiously hopeful” is where I’m putting it at this point…

Go well with your day!

Looks surprisingly surfable down here this morning. Light offshores (rather than those nasties from the SE) mean the surface is clean & smooth. Swell is only around 8 seconds, so it’s not a powerhouse, but the size at Nth Cronulla was getting up towards headhigh on the bigger sets. Bit of a crowd, but…

Posted on June 24th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Overcast and cool on the Central Coast this Thursday morning.  The swell is semi-smooth at 2 – 3 feet from the east southeast.  There is a light northwest breeze going northeast later.  High tide at 0635 and low tide around 1210.  Local barometer 1029 hpa, 9 degrees C. 97% humidity.  Have a good one!

Dark, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 24th, 2010 in Byron.

It was cold, wet and windy with not a whole lot of available sunlight, in Byron Bay today. Yet there’s a very real beauty in this kind of weather, it just takes a little more effort to see it when you’re shivering, windswept and wet. But see it we did, and as usual we managed a shoot. There were a few lumpy slides in the bay and despite the darkness of the day plenty were still out and about looking for a few waves, In Byron Bay Today.

Not too pretty

Posted on June 23rd, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

There is some energy about this morning, but gee it’s not too lovely looking. The wind’s out of the ENE at 10-15kts, so it’s solidly onshore at Dee Why. The swell is a couple metres out at sea and coming from the SE, but Huey’s got the power setting at an anemic 7 seconds or so. Throw in cloudy skies with the odd shower or two and you couldn’t say it has the makings of a classic winter’s day (from a surf perspective that is).

Latest news from the wonderful world of the wave forecast models is a curate’s egg of sorts. Mostly not a great egg it has to be said, but the best bit currently looks like possibly being around Friday when there might be SE pulse into the waist to chest high range at the better spots.

The prospect of something more substantial for early next week has disappeared from the latest run of the models. So, if they’re right, we’re in for more of these marginal conditions.

Oh well, I know what you could do, you could keep on smilin’!

Greetings from the other side of town! No surprises that the situation down here is as dire as on the Nthn Bchs. Small weak & onshore, but still some bods pulling the occasional short ride
