Somewhere North of Ballina

Posted on June 23rd, 2010 in Surf Reports.

I was hoping that my first proper post for this illustrious site would have beautiful images of sun kissed glassy waves peeling down the point. But the winds are gusting 20 to 30 knots from the SE and have been all night. Time to catch up on all those other jobs..I don’t even want to go out and take photo! I’ll update later if it the wind dies off.

Winter Southerly, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 23rd, 2010 in Byron.

Now we all like a bit an offshore breeze, but it was getting pretty blowy in Byron Bay today. It started off innocent enough as Huey dropped a few cold showers on us and cut through our winter woollies with a brisk southerly this morning. But right about lunchtime the wind suddenly upped the ante in the bay. The waves were kind of small and fun, but that wind, I tell you it was cold and strong, making it way hard for this crusty old salt to get motivated and get a shoot. But we eventually got moving only to find many willing to do battle with the blow out in the water. Meanwhile on the beach, unsuspecting backpackers rolled along the shoreline like sand encrusted tumbleweeds and parents chased their organic offspring as they sailed away. And so was the way of just another winter southerly, In Byron Bay Today.

Small waves about this morning at Dee Why

Posted on June 22nd, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

There isn’t much going on at the beach, but at least there are some waist high sets for the keen. The average period is a pretty marginal (but not hopeless) 8 seconds, however there should be some punchier sets because there’s also some 12 second stuff in amongst it. It was coming from the ESE and was averaging around the 1.5 metre mark as the day got started.

Only a few bods in the water this morning. The lack of participants probably comes down to the rather dull skies and sort of sloppy looking surface conditions. Wind was out of the WSW but the forecast has it going around to the s-se later, so the earlier one gets in the better.

With luck there will be something around over the next couple days. It doesn’t look like anything spectacular, but at least it shouldn’t go flat. The latest run of the models has Friday looking about the best prospect across the immediate forecast period. Happily the models seem to be showing the possibility of a swell generating system developing in the southern Tasman toward the weekend. Here’s hoping that a) it happens and b) the long range call for a solid south pulse on Monday comes about as a consequence.

Have yourself a great day!

Well, there’s more energy than the past couple of days, but I reckon you’d still need to be keen to brave this cold for what’s on offer. It’s a bit windblown, a bit bumpy, a bit grey, a bit small, a bit weak, and basically a bit crap

Mysterious Flu, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 22nd, 2010 in Byron.

You know, we had some joyous little waves in and around Byron Bay today. But the general consensus was ‘where did all these people come from?’ This is what everyone kept asking me, and to be honest I don’t have a good answer. Sure the school holidays up in Queensland start at the end of this week. But they haven’t started yet, and town is packed, there’s traffic everywhere, the surf was really crowded at several breaks and it was all kind of manic for a winters Monday in the bay. Hmm maybe everyone had an RDO but I doubt it. No I suspect that seeing as we’re finally seeing some decent swell pushing through the bay, that suddenly a couple of hundred people were struck down with a mysterious flu, which caused them to call in sick for work, In Byron Bay Today.

Dee Why: Dribble + Winter Solstice Today

Posted on June 21st, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Had a look at Curly this morning. No better than the dribble at Dee Why. Swell has turned E but there is a bit of spike in interval. The odd set up the middle at Dee Why Beachie but the wind;s light SE so you can guess what the quality is like.

Winter Solstice today. Shortest day of the year: 9 hours, 54 minutes of sun.

Beginning tomorrow, the days start getting longer!

Sunrise: 07:00;  Sunset 16:54 hrs
